Stereogum Readers Poll: Sufjan's Next State

A fitting end to our series of poll result posts. Sufjan Stevens released your favorite album of 2005 and took first place in the "Male Indie Rock Hottie" category.

We asked you which state Sufjan should do next. 2,587 of you answered that question, and here's the breakdown:

South Carolina    15
South Dakota    15
Vermont    17
Nebraska    19
Montana    20
Mississippi    22
Oklahoma    23
Kansas    25
New Hampshire    26
West Virginia    28
Arizona    29
Nevada    29
Tennessee    30
Missouri    31
North Carolina    32
Wyoming    33
Alabama    34
Arkansas    34
Kentucky    35
North Dakota    35
Idaho    36
Maine    36
Colorado    38
Maryland    38
Connecticut    39
Iowa    39
New Mexico    39
Georgia    47
Louisiana    48
Washington    48
Rhode island    56
Virginia    56
Wisconsin    57
Indiana    62
Utah    63
Delaware    65
Alaska    68
Hawaii    69
Minnesota    72
Florida    73
Massachusetts    81
Oregon    87
Pennsylvania    87
Ohio    99
New Jersey    122
Texas    146
New York    190
California    194
Could someone pass the results on to Mr. Stevens? I'd like to hear his take on The O.C., maybe as a duet with Peter Gallagher.

Delaware and Alaska each got 60+ votes? Seems like each of those could be taken care of in an EP.

who else is tired of the fifty-states project? i tried listening to illinoise with non-indie heads the other day and it was suddenly hard to care.

andrew bird should have won, btw.

I would like to know how Delaware got 65 whole votes. Did you count me, like, 65 times?

I asked him when he was at the Mercury Lounge a few weeks back; he actually said to me, "No. Not Delaware." Also said that he hoped to pass the concept on to some other artist when he tires of it.

So now I'm hoping for Andrew Bird's "Delaware."

California beat New York? But we all know he's going to do a random state that no one cares about next, because he's cool like that.

If there's a God inn heaven then Sufjan will be crushed by a giant roadside statue of the world's largest potato while researching Idaho.

I don't care if he dies or not, just that I don't have to see endless articles about this crap every time I go to a blog. If this was, say, Meatloaf or Hillary Duff doing something this lame we'd all make fun of them. No surprise then he tops the best record and "hottest" duder polls, the only thing saving Sufjan from the well-deserved mockery of his peers is crushes and man-crushes from sad, lonely hipsters.

Wow, I was just wondering the same thing myself-- I think that this poll is just people voting in their state... it's just about follows population...roughly. GO TEXAS!

It looks like everyone* wants their own state sufjanized and that the stereogum readership is genereally geographically representative of the us population.

* or mostly everyone. i'm pretty sure i voted for minnesota or wisconsin to keep the midwest theme going strong.

new jersey, motherfucks.

and vermont when sufjan makes it past his success, and is cemented for all his years as relevant. he will write the vermont album when he has a huge beard, and a pot belly full of parrots and cymbals.

and fuck the NY and california votes. boo. especially california.

It appears that all 48 states were represented. Is this related to indie-yuppie geographic populations?

I think he should do another midwest. Minnesota is too close to michigan. I like the idea of South Dakota, especially since it was so low on the list. That makes it even cooler.

by the way, you guys should do me a fav and click on my site and click some credit card links so i can make som cash.

I can't believe Smithsonian Folkways hasn't chosen to capitalize on this hysteria by re-issuing Paul Clayton's "Bay State Ballads." Throw together some hip, ironic cover art and a blurb from Sufjan, and the thing sells itself!

The key point to take away from the poll results, I think, is that Sufjan Stevens should get out of the midwest for his next 50 States album. I like both the Michigan and Illinois albums, but they both share a similar style, and that may have something to do with the fact both states are from the same region of the country. Getting outside the midwest -- especially toward the coasts -- will give Stevens something new to write about, new sounds to integrate into his music, and fresh perspectives to draw on when he's developing characters for the songs. New Jersey sounds okay; New York or California would be great, too.
