New Midlake - "Roscoe"
We can't take credit for discovering this fantastic Midlake tune (it's already been posted on a dozen other MP3 blogs), but "Roscoe" is definitely worth the 7MB on your hard drive. I love how it kicks off with some '70s synth and a mellow guitar riff that wouldn't sound out of place on the Wet Hot American Summer soundtrack.

They're a great band. I used to live in New Orleans several years ago, and they played a lot there, even opening for my friend's band a few times. You could tell they had massive potential. Bamnan and Silvercork is definitely worth picking up as is their first EP whose name escapes me right now. I think the last time they played NYC was two years ago at the Living Room during CMJ...they are clearly due for another visit.

i saw these guys in austin in may, and they were great live. i soon after bought Banman and Silvercork , and have been listening to it on and off since. i love their sound, but the new track is a little... edgier(?), and i love it. thanks!

This song is excellent. It reminds me of CSNY in the best way, in that i want to go back in time and take acid in the mud. I checked out there website and streamed some of their other stuff and it was no way near this good. It sounded like a poor man's Radio Head. But this "Roscoe" is a keeper.

Are you kidding me? "Kingfish Pies" made it's way 'round the blogs like crazy last year, with plenty of reason. It alone makes the album worth finding. Listen to it 3 times in a row initially to fully appreciate.

I just wanted to say that the titular line in that song is really brilliant. I mean, I know exactly what he means by being born in a different time or place with a different name. Like, I wrote one part of a song about whether or not I would write the same songs if I had blond hair or if I weighed twenty pounds more of less.
I dunno. It's just one of those really odd lyrics that I can relate to. Like that Akron/Family line about finding scissors right in front of you.

That CD isn't very solid, but it has such beautiful moments. Definately worth it. I've been tracking them since their involvement with Eisley.

they are from denton, tx, where i live, these guys are great. according to john vanderslice, one of the most underrated bands around right now. a lot of other cool things going on in this scene right now. comparable to austin even. the angelus is another good denton band. Eisley is a good texas band. also micah p. hinson. way to go texas!

Midlake's great. I think they do more experimentation than most bands without losing pop sensibility. They seem to have meaning and purpose in their lyrics too.
I saw them in 2004 at the Dallas New Music Festival, and they played through all of 'Bamnan' with videos going in the background, and it brought out the story being told on the album.
Some of my Denton friends said that Midlake had been listening to more CSNY and Jackson Browne, etc. during the writing of their new album. I had no idea what to expect, but now I know, and I love it.
