In Stereogum's neverending quest to tell you which indie rock song was in which network sitcom last night, we turn to Kris at PantryRaider. He heard some Pavement on that new Doogie Howser show and even took a screengrab...
"Since Michelle Williams uttered 'It's Been Slanted and Enchanted' on Dawson's Creek, indie yuppies have been either annoyed or elated with television's shout outs. Last week's mention of the Arcade Fire on Four Kings didn't seem to sit so well. However, last night's How I Met Your Mother's use of Pavement's 'Spit on A Stranger' got me all choked up. Not final montage of Six Feet Under choked up, but there was definately a tear or two. Good thing they didn't use the Nickel Creek version, it could have led to full waterworks."

i'm all for tv using more obscure music (alright, indie) in the background, particularly when it's appropriate to, and enhances, the scene, especially when the music is used straight-up and not explicitly referenced. it's good for the musical artists, and presumably good for the show. what i hate is when tv shows just name-drop an obscure or indie artist, and don't provide any context, meaning, reason, or need for the reference (i'm looking at you 'gilmore girls' and 'four kings'). it's such a desperate ploy for credibility it can be painful to watch at times...
oh, and that robin from 'how i met your mother' is smokin... pretty good episode last night.

this show is so lame. i can't stand to watch it, especially that one dude (not the main character or the doogie howser guy, the other one...) who is quite possibly the worst actor ever. and it doesnt help that the writing is so damn cheesy

More kinda-indie: How I Met Your Mother had a wedding episode a few weeks ago and they used "Soul Meets Body" by Death Cab at the end.

I actually like HIMYM. Robin is incredibly hot in a vaguely attainable way. And they really won me over when they used "Inside of Love" to close out their Halloween episode.

They also name dropped Belle & Sebastain in the second episode. It seems forced, like they throw it in just for the "hey look at us we like cool music" factor. The show is mediocre at best but compared to Four Kings it's damm near Shakespearian

Im watching Love Monkey right now and Ben Folds just had a cameo. There was some indie reference at the beginning of the episode, but I forgot what it was about.

A few years back I was at Best Buy and the Nickel Creek version of SOAS came on and I had to put down whatever I was buying and had to walk out. The only other time that has happened to me was when Best Buy played Leann Rimes' version of "Purple Rain."
The Kathryn Williams version sounds cool on first listen, though.

I actually work in music licensing for an indie label in the city and although it's easy for most people to just say that an artist has "sold out" because their favourite band is on How I Met Your Mother or Love Monkey, licensing has become a way for artists that don't see radio airplay or MTV to recoup on their records and make a couple of extra bucks. Some of you will probably spew forth that Pavement was a pretty successful indie band and they were, but consider that most bands make their money off consistent touring, which Malkmus hasn't done in years. The bottom line is that it doesn't really dilute the artist because a)who watches awful shows like that for the music? and b)who watches that awful show?

plus, they back it up by actually playing good music, not just mentioning it.

I came across this site while searching for the name of a song played in the TV series "How I met your mom". It was played at the end of episode 12 when Ted saw Victoria for the first time.
I though that it might be the song "Spit on the pavement" mentioned on this site (January 24, 2006) but it's not
