New Snow Patrol - "Hands Open"

You so knew we were gonna post this. How could we not? For most of '05 we were Sufjan central. Check this lyric:

"Put Sufjan Stevens on / And we'll play your favorite song / Chicago bursts to life / And your sweet smile remembers you / My hands open..."
Snow Patrol - "Hands Open" (MP3 Link Expired)

And despite that curious namecheck, this song hints at a new edgier Snow Patrol. If you like "Hands Open," stream another song from the forthcoming Eyes Open by clicking here.

I first heard this one being spun by John-In-The-Morning on KEXP these past couple of days. It veers a little toward Goo Goo Dolls territory if you ask me.

This is ok. "You're all I have" is better. Anyone have an mp3 of that?

I'm sorry, I meant to say it's pretty awful.

The stream link don't work, brother.

And the whole transcodey-sounding album has leaked. Just look in the proper places.

This was much better live. This sounds so formula, like a throwaway radio single. And what happened to Gary's voice? Here, it sounds so generic. Other songs from this record are better.

i still haven't figured it out!

It's formulaic but it's also excellent - I don't begrudge them their rock-by-numbers if they can do it this well. Second link needs to be fixed.

it needs to be left in 2005, where it belongs.

Sorry to be in the majority, but this is so godawful, I would rather listen to Ashlee Simpson copping Hot Hot Heat than this. Gah. Edgier, you mean, more Coldplay than say, Cutting Crew?

that's funny cos I was at one of their shows three weeks ago, and got to talk to the singer after the show, and the first thing he said was "Sufjan, cool" when he noticed my Michigan shirt. Unfortunately by that point I was feeling very unsober, so I didn't understand why he said that until the following morning...

It is formulaic and ordinary, but I still kind of like it.

ah, not too bad. The worst thing about the namecheck isn't the fact that sufjan was last year's big buzz name, it's just how awkward the name sounds itself, and the mentioning of chicago was unnecessary.

I truly enjoy some stuff that most people would consider awful, but I actually deleted this song from my library after listening to it once. When he goes "haaands open" I actually cringed. It sounds like a theme song from a teen soap opera.

I adore Snow Patrol, and I was blown away by how terribly bland their new songs are. Granted, the last album wasn't much more exciting, but this? It's not terrible, just...boring. Like their main goal going into the studio was to create music that was even more sleep-inducing than Coldplay's latest.

As for "edgier," perhaps one should listen to their first album before making that claim. They've actually been sliding in the opposite direction since about 1999.

haha when i heard this for the first time on kcrw my first thought was "Why are they playing the Goo Goo Dolls" - love that i'm not alone. And Snow Patrol was definitely edgier when they were on Jeepster and sounded like Gomez. And by the way the new Gomez record is GORGEOUS.

Snow Patrol are the new Creed. Even their song titles sound the same.

A band "jumps the shark" on it's second record?

Weird.

That's rare.
