Sonic Youth To Play Gilmore Girls
Sonic Youth -- who are opening this summer for Pearl Jam (ouch! ... OK, I take back my misguided insult Ten Clubbers; it's not like SY's opening for Atreyu.) -- visit Stars Hollow today to tape a cameo for the WB drama's season finale. In the Gilmore episode, airing 5/9, Thurston, Kim, and daughter Coco (on shakers, awww) will perform an acoustic version of "What A Waste." But first: Paul Anka.
"What A Waste" will be on SY's upcoming album Rather Ripped, which Stereogum will rip and preview for you as soon as we get our grubby hands on it. (Though if you have the aforementioned track, you should e-mail it to us.)
In other teen drama news -- despite Paul Scheer's assertion that "If Seth Cohen had a blog Stereogum might be it!" -- it's actually been a while since we've talked about The O.C.. That's 'cause of the surprising dearth of good tunes and Bait Shop bands lately. Tom Vek's cameo lasted only 5 seconds ... about as long as Marissa's coke problem.

not that it matters, really (and this doesn't discount the "why in the world are *they* the openers?" factor), but sonic youth opened up for pj back in 2000, too.
of course that's not nearly as bad as when neil young opened up for dave matthews band. sheesh.

The OC also has an annoying tendency to bury the lede -- like last night, when they played what was clearly a Radiohead/Thom Yorke song (which I didn't recognize, tho I'm not so much of a fan that I'm ruling out the track being just a ho-hum b-side) then announced at the end that tonight's episode featured music from some 2nd tier crap band.

I didn't see Sonic Youth with Peal Jam in 2000 when they played Memphis, but I did see them the next night for one of their "Perspective Musicales" shows. Eddie Vedder sat in on the first half of the show playing guitar behind a poetry reading by Lee Ranaldo. Then joined them for a scroching "Lightin' " at the end. He was introduced simply as "our friend Ed."

et tu stereogum? other than those already mentioned, other openers for pearl jam over the years include: ben harper, idlewild, sparta, frank black, dismemberment plan, death cab, supersuckers, X, bad religion, mudhoney, and the ramones. and name one other band, having just sold 10 million records, that might choose to serve as the uncredited backup band for a legend like neil young.

Pearl Jam is one of those bands I don't particularly care for musically, but I have lots of respect for. As far as mainstream rock bands go, I don't think you can find a more highly-principled band. Rob Pollard will also be opening for them, by the way.
Oh, and I've heard Rather Ripped. It's solid. I may have to actually watch Gilmour Girls just for that episode.

I will freely admit to being a Gilmore Girls fan. I'm about a season behind now, but I dig the show.
Oh, and I saw Sonic Youth open for Pearl Jam at Deer Creek in 2000. Whoever said above that the crowd would tune out pretty much got it right.
