Lily Allen's Infectious Sample

For those curious about the "Knock 'Em Out" piano roll...

Professor Longhair - "Big Chief" (MP3 Link Expired)

We're not sick of her quite yet. Off to Beirut.

Ah ha... I've been listening to all my old Dr. John records trying to find the riff... at least I got the New Orleans part right.

ok, i just got off my arse and went and put on "Uptown Top Rankin". that's not it. Alton Ellis' "I'm Still In Love With You" sounds close but I don't think that's it either. i give up for now. over to you, fellow trainspotters...

I want to like Lily Allen, but I can't quite get into the tracks I've heard. The production is well done, she's got an "original sound" I guess... but her songs never seem to amount to much. They start with a nice groove, then float along on that groove until the song is done. Her voice is pleasant, but she doesn't bring much in the way of dynamics.

I'm loving her right now. The tracks are great and I think she's got creative lyrics as well. Thanks for the heads-up Scott. "Nan You're A Window Shopper" is my favorite track for sure but they're all pretty good. Any one know if she's got a label for the US yet?

4 Reasons Lily is Brilly-ant:

1. "Alfie", wherein she berates her brother for smoking too much pot.

2. "Smile", which features the opening line "...but you was fuckin that girl next door".

3. "Cheryl Tweedy", which busts out a breezy, skittering drum&bass beat.

4. "Not Big", wherein she says to her about-to-be-ex-boyfriend, "We'll see how you feel in a couple of weeks when I've worked my way through all your mates."

She's like the chav Liz Phair!

Heh, "chav." "A man in a tracksuit attacks me," say the Kaiser Chiefs.

I previously misidentified the sample as the Meters. Here's why: http://cdjames.com/Meters_BigChief.mp3

I agree with Pat Suzuki...I hope she releases her album here, the stuff I've downloaded is great and I'm really into it.

we were guided here by a friend who asked us to put some people out of their misery!!! we co-wrote and produced half of lily's album including smile and ldn. the sample in smile is actually 'free soul' by the 'soul brothers' written by clement dodd and jackie mittoo (although we recreated all the samples for the album). thanks for all the great feedback here - it made all the hard work worth while!!

Ram, I'm sure none of the chavs are taking offense at the fact that you're saying you hate them all. Hatred is OK as long as it's polite, as you graciously demonstrate.
