Art Brut & We Are Scientists @ Knitting Factory, NYC 5/17/06

Thanks to the blogosphere, it was no surprise last night when Art Brut's opening act, Art Brut 47, turned out to be We Are Scientists. "We are pretty much on the vanguard of Art Brut cover bands," Keith explained. "But they booked the real Art Brut for the same night, so we'll just play We Are Scientists covers instead."

No Art Brut covers? Not even a fake Eddie Argos moustache? LET DOWN! Still, the trio was tight, opening with "Lousy Reputation" and closing the set with "The Great Escape." We caught the tail end of early opener The Chalets and liked what we heard. As for headliner Art Brut? You know the drill. Hysterical fans, hysterical band.

Here's WAS' more successful attempt at being a cover band, doing some Sigur Ros for Jo Whiley...

Nice. I think you mean, "The Great Escape," though.

The Chalets are an incredible twee/ synth band from Ireland. One of the lead singers is engaged to Eddie Argos - She is the real "Emily Kane".

We Are Scientists doing Hoppípolla, how interesting. I totally dig it, it's hypnotically restless.

She isn't Emily Kane...
Emily Kane is.
I interviewed Eddie last year. He said he met Emily, who has a boyfriend and was really worried that Eddie actually felt the same as he did all those years past. Oh & she's got a boyfriend who looked like he could batter him, according to Eddie.

What a band

jo whiley is a vacant shell of a dj, like the high preistess of scenester. It's just cancerously unfunny dialogue filled in with blatant wagon-hopping-band-championing. Steve lamaque is still 100% though.

The Chalets, are wonderful.

Just thought I should pitch in there.

i hate jo whiley with an unbridled passion that is truly inexplicable for one as calm and goodly as myself.
her chat is so terrible that i have an onset of tourettes and ranting whenever she relays an "anecdote".
don't listen to her then, you all advise, but driving around weekdays in the morning, there's no other station that even plays music, let alone vaguely listenable music.

art brut though, the joke continues, but that's been raked over with the huge row that started the last time stereogum posted about them.

also, how did WAS get so big in the UK, when a band such as The Black Angels don't even get released here?

Their Passover record is truly monumental, and they should be huge.

listening to this guy trying to sing in icelandic is brilliant :D He has absolutely no idea what he's singing, but somehow he gets most of it right.

hey icelandic fellow,

what is it sigur ros actually sing about?
hoppipola is a beautiful song, but it'd get ruined for me if the chap was singing "i've seen her naked....twice!"

Emily Kane was written ages before Pee Pee met Art Brut dude. She told me so herself. Am I the only one who really prefers The Chalets to Art Brut?

For the record, last night's show was, as we used to say in the Old Country, totally friggin' awesome.

I hate to be mean about this (lie) but the Chalets are no good (truth).
It's all a matter of authenticy.
I may be off base (not likely) but bands like the Chalets, because they are Irish, can only be short lived crazes as they are not genuine.
Sure being genuine isn't all that and a bag of spuds when it comes to music... but the chalets are incredibly average and, really, are just a bunch of ugly Irish kids (we are a nation of uglies), who will, and I fucking guarantee this, not last past a second album.
That is a guarantee.
Worth the paper it's printed on (fingers crossed nobody has gold leaf papar)

Oh, if a good Irish band is something you want to squawk about... check out the Delorentos...
I don't fucking know them or haven't talked to them about their dicks or anything... like other Irish people seem to do... but they fit right in with the 'now' with enough honesty for me to believe them.

Think About Life went on after Art Brut, Wednesday night -- a couple members of AB were down there to watch -- and were lots of fun. One member of the crowd started break dancing; another one grabbed a spare mic and joined in. Total party.

Ive seen WAS a couple of times, their humour is always better than the music, or at least their humour is better than the album tracks. Keith is hot. This may sound quite odd, but I work part time in a record shop in Manchester, UK, the website is; www.voxpopmusic.com. Not being biased but it's worth a look, there's a whole selection of lps, cds, 7''s. There's some really good indie stuff, particulary Manchester stuff. Pop in if youre in Manchester!

Band To Watch: Threatmantics

Threatmantics are a scruffy Welsh rock trio that throw some wrinkles into the scruffy rock formula: Instead of a lead guitarist, they have a lead John Cale viola, and their drummer does double-time with a keyboard. The two guys mixing...
