Good to see Stereogum is in the top 10. I would've put Pandora first though - that is one awesome music site, and if the Music Genome Project (the music database behind Pandora) were better utilitsed by third party companies, then I would have to say that it would be better than Gracenote.

Its nice to see the number of blogs that made it on the list. #7 over a lot of great sites is a real accomplishment.

hah, well ahead of pitchfork
nice one!
Score = 0
Glad to see stereogum in there, but jefitoblog.com needs to be, too.
Score = 0
i think it's the K-Fed coverage that seperates you guys from the rest of the indie bloggers.

Nice work Stereogum.

So how does it feel to kick Pitchfork's ass in 13 different ways?

i think its funny that your link to pitchfork goes to a "livestock world" webpage...always stickin' it to 'em, stereogum.

"i think its funny that your link to pitchfork goes to a "livestock world" webpage...always stickin' it to 'em, stereogum."
I think it's funny that you're checking the validity of all the links, way to go!!!
congrats Stereogum, but go easy on the Britt/K Fed story and gimmie some stories about Beirut and you stalking Sufjan.

Congrats!

no hype machine on there? are you fucking joking?

Would love to see The 25 Best Music Websites too.

Well done!
Why is iTunes #1 though? Its not very informative, the files only work on one mp3 player, it is very restrictive in what it puts on the servers. Heck, I'd even rate Purevolume above it.
Score = 0
Little Steven's Underground Garage?
They have to be kidding. Stay away from the irony EW, unintentional or not.
Score = 0
I came out of this actually feeling sorry for Pitchfork...
and is Pandora really better than last.fm? cause i've experienced otherwise.
Score = 0
Stereogum is definitely better than Pitchfork! As is, in fact, Fluxblog, and all the other MP3 blogs up there. Yay!
Score = 0
I think they forgot last.fm

wooo hoo woxy!

i'm with nick. hype machine is the shit. (they got pub in rolling stone's 1000th anniversary issue, so i guess that's cool...)

Last.fm?!

Wow, you did slam pitchfork... good work. You guys are better than them by a mile. But where is last.fm, buddyhead's blog and fluxblog? There's a few on there I've never even heard of! Oh well.

Stereogum for president~!

nice job stereogum, congrats
but what about last.fm? I love their player, way better than pandora, I can't believe it's not even on the list

Way to go, Stereogum. Glad to see eMusic right up there, too.

What's eventually going to flatten and overhype all the great blogs are lists like these from such well respected magazines. Music media is basically trying to push everyone against Pitchfork which I totally get. I don't know anyone who truly loves Pitchfork, but I also don't know a single music fan that could live without it. Anyway, it's totally fucking cool that someone decided to place Stereogum at #7. Where the hell is GvB?
Score = 0
Last.fm has to be on the list! They are an incredible project for discovering and cataloging music that people like.
Observer Music Monthly has a better list: http://observer.guardian.co.uk/omm/story/0,,1729834,00.html

Who gives a shit what Entertainment Weekly says? I guess there's schadenfreude in Pitchfork being rated so low, but this reeks of some kind of inferiority complex by whomever put this list together. Sure, Pitchfork can be unbearably pretentious at times, but there's not a better resource for music on the web. Or there wasn't enough pop coverage on the site to justify a high ranking - but then, why is Stereogum so high? Pitchfork has a good relationship with just about every major indie act today - I learned a bit more about Sufjan Stevens from their actual interview with him than Stereogum's just slinking off behind him at some concert. Pitchfork, if not lovable, is certainly essential.

unfortunately... the observer list works more for me too.
drownedinsound, resonance, wikipedia and last.fm are quite important to me.

Am I alone in having never really found a new band I liked on Pandora? The website seems to work a lot better in theory than in practice, at least in my experience.

While it's to be awesome #7 on the list, no one seems to have mentioned that stereogum is the the #1 music blog on the list. It's the highest-rated non corporate site (outside the Live Music Archive)That's fucking awesome guys. Congratulations Scott and crew!

www.pitchfork.com is not a good music site... i was expecting to hear the newest gossip on radiohead- instead, i found out about adverts and barns.

to reiterate what's already been said a few thousand times, i agree that last.fm would've been nice
but it's even nicer that stereogum made it... well done

pandora stinks...i put in sunset rubdown and they recommended scott weilands solo cd. wtf?!

That list is just
a list of Viacom / Warner Brother / AOL / music industry webpages directory.
That has nothing to do with "Music website" let alone "Best music website"
the goal of that list is obviously making people "BUY" stuff from entertainment weekly associates corporations.
It's pretty transparent. It's not informing/entertaining the people. It's advertisement in guise of informing.

Congrats Steregoum!
The title is "The 25 Best Music Websites", but then in the intro it says "See Entertainment Weekly's picks for where to pick up on hot new tunes".
If it's a matter of what sites clue readers into the latest music, I'd have Pfork higher. Although people love to hate them they due to write up new bands faster than any other one site consistently.
If the article were actually about "Best Music Websites", I'd definitely add Allmusic and Billboard.

Maybe it is a bit corporate, but whatevs; it's cool to see Stereogum on there (you definitely deserve to be on any list, I say). I used to love Audioscrobbler before it went under, and I think they were affiliated with last.fm. i haven't checked last.fm out, though.

Yay for stereogum and eMusic! well deserved listings there.
I'd agree that Hype Machine was overlooked. plus: what, no http://20jazzfunkgreats.blogspot.com/ ?
re the OMM list -- what the fuck, coolhunting.com at #3? roffles. great if you live in London and want to keep ahead of the other Nathan Barleys, I suppose, but this list here seems to have a bit more *music* involved.

hey i just saw that mag tonight and i wrote all the sites that i found interesting in the little memo pad in my cell phone. now that you've linked them all...it's much more convenient. i didn't think stereogum was that popular but i guess it is! congrats :)

this is kind of not a huge deal, but i would technically categorize itunes a website as well as an application, considering you can copy URLs.

Leaving allmusic.com off the list is inexcusable. And if they do this list again in 2 years, The Hype Machine just might be #1.
Score = 0
congrats stereogum -- you guys are on my favorites on the web. nice to have something other than music reviews to waste away my first three hours at work with. i have to say, however, that all the pitchfork backlash is ridiculous..."yeah, i'm so ahead of the scene". get over it douchebags; fact is, pitchfork is still the best music website on the web, without a doubt. don't even get me started on stylus, that steaming shitpile of a website, with its endless reviews of new scandinavian doom-metal albums that are set to "send your shit scrambling back to your asshole!" i feel way better now.
Score = 0
that last post was supposed to read "one of my favorites," and not the pretentious sounding, "on my favorites".

Pandora is great, the one thing lacking with Pandora is the fixed size/style of the player. I did a few mockups of vertical layouts of the player. I posted them on my blog:

I've got to agree with the other folks here that the omission of Last.fm was a terrible oversight. Of all the sites listed here, Last.fm is the only one that has consistently helped me discover new music that I really like.

BRET MICHAELS
NEW VH-1 REALITY SHOW “ROCK OF LOVE WITH BRET MICHAELS”
TO PREMIERE JULY 15TH
Put a superstar, mega-platinum hot rocker, into a Bel Aire mansion with 25 single women and what do you get? A HUGE rock and roll love fest party! Bret Michaels, superstar lead singer of the band Poison, is set to play with this bevy of beauties in a 10-part reality series premiering in July on VH-1 in July called “Rock of Love with Bret Michaels.”
The hard-rockin' Poison front man is looking for a woman who can truly keep up with his rock-n-roll lifestyle and not become jealous of his one true passion – performing which has been the reason for and destruction of most of his relationships. As VH1's hottest eligible bachelor, a bevy of beauties will vie to win his heart.
“It’s some of the most entertaining TV you’ll ever watch, I was entertained!” Bret Michaels said of the 10-part series. With beauties battling it out in the house and at the many competitions, Bret says “You know how Dr. Phil kind of solves some of the problems on his TV show? Well in handling some of these brawls in the house I became Dr. Phil-thy!”
With twenty years of continuous multi-platinum success, sold-out tours and a couple of high-profile relationships that never led to the altar, Michaels is ready to wear his heart on his sleeve. The series will focus on the never-before-revealed private side of Michaels.
So just what does it take to win Mr. Michael’s heart? “She had to be cool with my lifestyle. Knows I’m gonna be on the road a lot. Someone who is sexy and funny and smart. Basically it was pretty simple.”
In addition, this hard working front man is primed for the release of Poison’s new studio album, POISON’D!, set to drop on June 5th by EMI America Records/Capitol. Poison, the band that has sold more than 25 million records and DVDs worldwide, again features its original line-up of Michaels (vocals), C.C. DeVille (guitar), Rikki Rockett (drums) and Bobby Dall (bass). Poison will hit more than 50 U.S. cities this summer on their “POISON’D! 2007” nationwide tour with RATT and special guest White Lion joining Poison for most of the dates.
Bret Michaels is doing after-show parties on his Poison tour. For more information on that or any other booking arrangements, please contact Roger Anderson by sending him an email at RA@armentertianment.com

White Noise Records has a unique opportunity for musicians in the RI/MA/CT area.
We have all heard of 'pay to play' compilations where you get nothing but a few cds and an empty wallet.
Why pay a ton of cash and get nothing in return?
Our compilation - WHITE NOISE RECORDS: CONCEPTION is taking a new and beneficial approach to get YOU - the musician- the most out of a compilation.
We will be producing an initial run of 2000 CDs to distribute several ways.
1) Each band will receive 30 CDs to do with as they please - give away, sell, consign, etc
That is instant circulation for YOUR music through the other bands on the CD
2) White Noise Records will be sending these compilations to their list of industry contacts (including radio stations nationwide, management companies, A&R firms, etc) along with a media kit containing information on each band/musician to help spread the music to an industry focused audience
3) Through use of our promotional partners, these CDs will be added to SWAG bag promotions at events such as The Warped Tour, Ozzfest, NEMO, and other events in RI, MA, CT and NY.
But where is the unique part??
Instead of selecting a song you may already have lying around - or recorded in your mom's basement, we are giving you the opportunity to come into the White Noise Records HQ to record a new and exclusive track for the compilation.
You will be given studio with one of our top-notch engineers who will help you get the best sound possible and make your mark on the CD. All tracks will be mixed and mastered by our Gold Record Producer - Dave Pezza - to assure the quality is uniform across the board.
Please note - White Noise Records will NOT be selling these CDs - but we WILL be doing our best to get them in the hands of as many people as possible.
To cover costs of production, CD pressing, artwork, and distribution our cost is a mere $300.
If you were to sell your CDs at $10 each - you make your money back.
$15 - you can actually make an extra $150!
If you are interested in submitting for the CD, please send an MP3 and contact information (or a Myspace link) to compilation@whitenoiserecords.com.
IF YOU CURRENTLY DO NOT HAVE A RECORDING - BUT WOULD BE INTERESTED IN SIGNING UP - PLEASE SUBMIT CONTACT INFORMATION AND YOUR NEXT LIVE SHOW DATE.
NOTE: We will not be accepting everyone who submits for this compilation. Our Producer and A&R managers will be selecting the final lineup for this disk. If you are not selected - you will be added to our database and called upon for one of our next compilations.
This is a great opportunity to let us show you what WE can do - as well as let YOU show the WORLD what you can do!
We are looking to complete all recording and have the disc pressed by Mid-September so get your submissions in NOW!
If you are selected, we will contact you with all of the details and begin scheduling studio time accordingly.
We are looking for all musicians in all genres - Rock, Rap, Country, Techno, R&B, Metal, Acoustic, Indie, Emo, Latin, etc
Remember - it's YOUR music. Let White Noise Records help you showcase it!!!
