Ryan Adams @ Mercury Lounge, NYC 5/21/06

Last night we endured an entire set of Jesse Malin on the tip that Ryan Adams would be out for a few songs. He finally came out during the encore, by which point our ears had nearly been rotted through. Worth the wait? Tough to say. All we got from the guy were a few lines of harmony and an occasionally functioning guitar. No waifish actress types waiting in the wings, but we're still pretty sure it was Ryan. The guy put more cool into his few minutes on stage than the rest of the night in aggregate. And he looked nothing like that Grizzly Adams bit he'd been pulling a while back.

Amazing how he much he rocks even while napping. And look how someone rediscovered soap and shaving cream! Now, Ryan, how about taking those four discs worth of tunes you're writing and releasing one kick ass album instead? We promise we won't put it on the P2Ps.

We couldn't resist a before-and-after...

how does ryan adams get away with singing songs so strikingly similar to those of gram parsons with a voice so strikingly similar as well? is it just that the kids are too young to have heard of gram? if so, sad. i will always think of him as a low rent gram parsons. "a kiss before i go" made me instantly think of "streets of baltimore."

i don't think he gets away with masking his influences. in fact, i'd say he's very up-front about them. his best work makes explicit those influences, but manages to work his own ideas in there at the same time. and what's with the dissing the multiple albums? i like that he releases a lot of stuff. sure, some of it isn't great, but as a fan, it's always fun to hear new stuff from him, even if it isn't his best.

in other news, he looks surprisingly healthy in those photos. thanks for the post!

I believe Bob Dylan was influenced at least as much (if not more) by Woody Guthrie, but I certainly don't think you can take anything away from his music or consider him 'low rent.' Furthermore, as much as Ryan has borrowed the twang/country-rock sound from Gram, he's also written a lot that is completely different. I always think it's kind of funny when people rag on artist's for being influenced. Isn't it inevitable? Is it possible to be completely original?

How is it that Ryan can get away with being the biggest asshole on the planet and people still think he's cool?

Ryan has always admitted his influence from Gram. He used to cover white Frieght Liner, and he has taken part in multiple Gram tribute shows.
But the real question is why do people think they are clever when they continue to talk about the different ways Ryan has looked.

Dirty Lenin - people forgive a lot when you write a song like Meadowlake Street.

this is the same man who helped to put away a man for 10 years for leaking 4 tracks from his album? no matter how good his music is, i dont know if i could support him.

ya'll are just a bunch of straight up playa hatas!

seriously....

mr. adams has only proven to be one of the most prolific writers of our generation...

and is a rock star to boot....

what the fuck?

i applaud his catalog of music.....

he reminds me of a mix between pablo westerberg & roberto zimmerman....

and what the hell is wrong with that?

i'll go see him anytime he's in my town....

which means i won't...

so, i'll have to drive to atlanta....athens....charleston.....

& just hope he doesn't die young....

If Adams is a low rent Parsons, then Parsons is a low rent George Jones or Merle Haggard. Parsons didn't even write Streets of Baltimore.

Ya know Ryan Adams did inspire Elton to make his best album (Songs From The West Coast)in 30 years and that in turn inspired Ryan to make several shitty ones.Is he still in the Grateful
Dead?

Ryan Adams "hater?" What kind of language do you use for vermin like Osama Bin Laden? I've met Ryan numerous times, he's a really nice guy.

If you don't like him why are you on this websight posting comments? He is my favorite. Whatever he puts out music wise, he is way better than Bright Eyes.
