Oasis Beats Beatles

Speaking of the UK, British Hit Singles & Albums and NME.com have announced the results of their recent Greatest Album Of All Time poll. Definitely Maybe outranked Sgt. Pepper's for #1!

1. "Definitely Maybe," Oasis
2. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," The Beatles
3. "Revolver," The Beatles
4. "OK Computer," Radiohead
5. "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" Oasis
6. "Nevermind," Nirvana
7. "The Stone Roses," The Stone Roses
8. "Dark Side of the Moon," Pink Floyd
9. "The Queen Is Dead," The Smiths
10. "The Bends," Radiohead
In a statement, Liam dismissed Lennon/McCartney as "stoodents" (kidding). But Sir Paul shouldn't take the results too seriously; Up The Bracket inexplicably landed at #15.

Uh, yeah. Oasis at #1. . . you ever look at the UK charts? All sorts of worthless crapola that North American radio wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole.

there's a tribute band called 'the shitty beatles'.

this sums up the beatles.

i'd be happier if the beatles were known as 'the shitty beatles'.

the beatles hang around music like that guy who turned up at the after party at your flat, who no-one who knows, and who won't leave, even though it's midday the next day. the tosser.

it's obvious that the best album of all time is 'how it ends' by devotchka.

if devotcka was a party guest, he'd be fab. not unlike andrew wk, who comes to my house all the time.

who's to say that "up the bracket" isn't better than any oasis cd?

It kills em all. Oasis is the band that shoudn't be there (though I could've guessed that it would land #1).

'up the bracket'is one of the best albums in years. what's inexplicable is that oasis has two of the top 5 albums of all time according to this. the arctic monkey's album was named one of the best(andbetter than the Beatles) in the last NME bullshit ranking.

oasis blows. this list is blasmephous crap.

look, there's very good music from both sides of the atlantic (Beatles and Rolling Stones, to name two) and there is very bad music from both sides, too (Limp Bizkit and Oasis to name two). It really doesn't matter if where you're from, just if you're music is good. That's why this list is crap.

As for the "shitty beatles" comment: WTF!?! How come no one is outraged by this?!? What do you mean the beatles are shitty!?! How!? Why? What makes them shitty??? Your stupid "party" metaphor makes no sense!!!!! If it had not been for the beatles, Devotchka, your favorite band, and all other good music would have never existed!!! The Beatles are the reason good music has evolved and stayed alive! And you think they're SHITTY!?!

'Up the Bracket' is one of the best (if not only) true punk redcord in the last 15 years. Great lyrics, great songwriting, great production (by Mick Jones). Carl and Pete, despite the joke he has become, were one of the best musical pairings in years. It's kind of sad to see them end up apart with only one great record to remember them.

I agree. Here's a short list of albums that AREN'T in the top ten:

London Calling
Pet Sounds
Exile on Main Street
Rubber Soul
Blonde on Blonde

Idiots. And OK Computer is way better than any of that shit Oasis has done, nevermind Sgt. Pepper.

To the Beatle-hater... I don't know why people think it's cool to dismiss bands like the Beatles, who really were one of the most sonically adventurous pop bands of all time. It's like hating a band because of its hype: forget about it and concentrate on the music.

And I agree, Up the Bracket is better than any Oasis album, but no way does it belong on any "best of all time" music list.

You know what's sad? Not all that long ago, the NME used to be legitimately cool. And then the 90’s happened.

'up the bracket' is an incredible record, and certainly beats anything oasis has done. that's an odd list though. you're telling me 'nevermind' is not as good as 'revolver'? and 'the bends' is in the top 10? i like radiohead and all, but come on, let's get some sense here... whatever, it's all for fun anyway. next year, i'm sure arctic monkeys will be in the top-20 with that snoozefest they call a debut.

Yes, Up the Bracket is better than any Oasis album, but there were other, far more galling problems here. Just off the top of my head, where's the soundtrack from the epic Bee Gees/Peter Frampton "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heat's Club Band" film? Hello?? Steve Martin's version of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" ALONE is good for at least #5 on this list.

RE hating on the beatles:

i really love a meat feast pizza from pizza hut, but it doesn't mean everytime i eat one i have to give props to the asshole that invented pizza back the day.

Putting stuff on flat bread as a meal certainly goes back as far as ancient Rome. The word "pizza" itself appears just before 1000 AD, in the area between Naples and Rome, meaning "pie." Then some fucker invented the guitar, then the shitty beatles made modern music discussion a bore, then -thank fuck- the libertines released up the bracket. The end.

A better question is, if an Oasis song is a playing in a forest and nobody hears it. Is it playing?

The Brits are getting desperate. Since the actual arrival of an Oasis CD is like a tree falling in the forest, they are now compiling lists to exentuate how important this band is.

We've heard the songs. Nobody cares about Oasis for a reason.

Seconded! Most people badmouthing Oasis really hasn't given the band a chance. All too many people piss on the band because they heard Wonderwall too many times in 1996. Definitely Maybe being at number 1 isn't a new thing. It's been voted in the top echelon of albums quite a few times.

jamEs, I have given Oasis plenty of chances, but they remain shockingly average, with irritatingly nasal vocals, bad attitude and mindbogglingly dull song structures. "Overrated" doesn't even come close. The Beatles created modern rock as we know it, Oasis just threw up on it.

I love when people toss the hatorade at Oasis. They have complied more killer songs over the past 12 years than any band period. They have sold 40 million records and have played the biggest gigs ever (not counting lame free gigs in C. Park and such). Furthermore they single handedly changed the face of British music / culture forever.
This is why when they announce their stadium gigs 6 months before the freaking CD even goes on sale – they sell all of them out. Last year they sold 1.5 million tickets. Take a step back and kick that number around. And yes MSG was one of them so someone on this side of the Atlantic cares. How many bands still operate on that level and STILL endure so much backlash.
So carry on – keep slamming. While you are doing that we will hit play and listen to “Acquiesce” one more time…..and to think this is a B side. Amazing…

Hey now... I personally love Oasis (albeit their later work was far inferior to the early stuff), but why is the epic Guns 'N' Roses release, The Spaghetti Incident, not on the cut? Axl's politically charged vocals, and the inclusion of Charles Manson make this album a must have. Madchester? The Stone Roses? Whiny Radiohead? Or what about that one Coldplay album? I forget which one because they all sound the same, but that one was good. Or the last Clash album. Epic. Phooey.

James, your wall of evidence that Oasis is relevant comes up a bit short.

How has Oasis changed music and culture? While the Beatles were a phenomenon and invented popular music, Oasis were a derivative band with three hit albums the last of which sucked donkey balls.

They had some solid material early on but they morphed from catchy Madchester rock (Definitely Maybe) to Beatles ripoffs (What's the Story) to decadent Beatles ripoffs (Be Here Now) to what? Their music has gone nowhere.

The British press has been touting Oasis as the biggest this and the biggest that since they broke in the mid-90s. That's great for the U.K. but America and the rest of the world care jack shit about Oasis.

How many did Oasis' last record sell in the States? What was that record called? Ask anyone outside of the UK to name an Oasis record after Be Here Now and you'll get blank stares.

You can throw numbers around. Oasis weren't close to the biggest rock band of the 90s based on numbers and they weren't the most influental one either.

They were just a good band. Nothing to top lists about.

I't getting realy tired that people are blasting the Beatles, dismissing them as a band that is still being called the best of all time by aging baby-boomers that want to relive their days of glory. What?! To those that actually think that the Beatles are simply a relic of the past, I have a few choice words for you...Tomorrow Never Knows. One listen to that song, which was done at least 40 years ago, showcases a song that would blow any present song out there out of water.

Have you ever seen them in concert or heard the songs The Masterplan, Acquiesce, Talk Tonight, Half the World Away?

As far as trashing the british top ten's and billboard charts have you ever taken a look at the US charts? The fact that Oasis are not on those lists anymore is an honour when you have people like Mariah Carrey or people winnning singing contest like Clay Akin in the number one spot.....That is embarrassing!

British music lists seemed to be formed by the age group 20 - 40 whereas the US lists seemed to be formed by the age group 7 - 15

Jenny, my hat is off to you. While it's true that most popular music in the US has been horrible for well over 12 years, it's not very good in the UK, either. We should be discussing excellent music, not popular music. There are COUNTLESS UK groups more deserving of greatest album of all time than Oasis. Oasis is to music in the UK as Good Charlotte is to music in the US. Fake usurpers of deeper, better music.

For a large portion of their career, Oasis has been BLATANTLY derivative of the Beatles. Not only do they copy the Beatles sound (badly), but they copy the Beatles image as well. Do you actually believe Liam Gallagher's mop top and blue granny glasses are merely a coincidence? Hence the bitter irony of this list. Oasis not only fervently denies the influence, but has the gall to piss all over the Beatles. If you love Oasis but hate the Beatles, you've got no logic. You're glorifying a mediocre copy of a masterpiece. Even their earlier pop-style music was palatable to a person with taste.

Oasis is oh so emotional and rebellious - about absolutely nothing of any real significance. Wow, they're fighting again. How provocative! People are suicide bombing England and the US, global warming is becoming noticeable on a day-to-day basis, Iran is making nukes, and Bush is threatening to turn the US into a fascist theocracy. Good-bye habeas corpus. But, never mind all that. There's nothing more fascinating than a couple of drunken, over-privileged, wafish 120 pound morons having another row over nothing of consequence. Fuck Oasis.

From the American Heritage Dictionary: unlistenable ADJECTIVE: Being such that listening with comfort or pleasure is impossible: an unlistenable operatic solo; an unlistenable diatribe.

By the way… bling-bling is now included in the Oxford Dictionary. How "proper"! (Proper like M.C. Hammer I guess, not proper like a pompous twit.) http://www.rapreviews.com/archive/2004_10_lifeaftercash.html
