Goes Cube @ Knitting Factory, NYC 7/11/06

All of the acts on Gothamist's Movable Hype 8.0 bill were damn good – including Brooklynites Takka Takka and Project Jenny/Project Jan (who you may recall for inspiring a flood of Chinatown Bus horror stories), and Toronto's Femme Generation. But local act Goes Cube's sledgehammer assault was inescapably awesome. They bludgeoned our eardrums -- and our hearts -- with their epic Fugazi feel, machine gun double-bass assault and monumental larynx-shredding vocals. The wall of sound this trio pulverized the Knit with capped a great night of solid music.

But it got better. When we spoke with Goes Cube's guitarist/vocalist David Obuchowski about getting a copy of the record, he replied, "Funny story about that. And it involves Stereogum!" Which, of course, is our kind of story.

Bear with us here. Remember Marguerite Perrin? She was the Jesus freak who had a televised meltdown on the reality show Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy last year. Now, remember the tune that sampled and spun that freak-out into the Internet sweeping song "Slagkick?" Well that was David of Goes Cube!

Said David: "When you guys posted that song, our servers crashed! But not before this Hollywood filmmaker got it and had the idea of casting Marguerite in their film, and having Goes Cube score the soundtrack. Well, things take awhile, but we finally got our check from that licensing. And we used that money to record our debut album! And it’s all thanks to Stereogum."

And here you thought reality television was a waste of time.

Goes Cube just may have become our favorite underground locals. They're definitely our loudest. Don't miss their live thing. Catch 'em in Manhattan on August 1st at the Annex. Just be sure to bring earplugs, 'cause our ears are still ringing. (But in a good way.) You can buy their EP from Ace Fu Family Business here. Get started with these tracks, which nearly capture the onslaught of their live set.
