The Knack Sue Run DMC
Knack members Doug Fieger and Berton Averre filed a copyright infringement suit against Run DMC on Friday. Apparently, the two just discovered that twenty-year-old rap hit "It's Tricky" samples "My Sharona." Rolling Stone has details. Is there no statute of limitations on this shit?

it's funny that the comments on the RS page are much more interesting than the actual story...

Pythagoras should sue everyone.

There is a 3yr statute of limitations, but as each play/download/cd-sale is a new infringing violation essentially all the SOL will do in this case is limit the damages to the last 3 years.
The Rev and his bros clearly have an argument of "laches" which is a latin word which means: "but dude, its been 20 fuckin years!"

i can't find any limits for bringing a case regarding infringement for sampling. most of the statutes of limitations i can find for copyright law are 3 or 5 years, but i'm also in the middle of class and so i can't look too heavily.

they must really need money.

yeah, serious laches defense on RUN DMC's part. if it takes you 20 years you're probably well beyond the point where you "reasonably" should have discovered the infringing activity.
their motion to dismiss should just say "hey, The Knack? where the fuck you been?"

I find it completely unplausable that for 20yrs nobody even mentioned to them that the song exsisted.

I agree with Matt. I thought the rap/rock feud died out with Limp Bizkit and Ravi Shankar, but now I'm not so sure...

In the liner notes to the -Poptopia: 70's- powerpop collection Rhino issued a few years ago, Doug Fieger is quoted a few times. One of his comments mentions Ice Cube, and implies that rap isn't "real" music.

In other news, every artists in the world sues Beastie Boys for sampling their music on Paul's Boutique.

if they'd bothered to listen to 'do you wanna cos it's tricky' (mashup by thriftshop XL), they could have figured that out ages ago.

there's a song by a band called the rogue traders and one of their songs is a complete rip off of my sharona, the only diffrenece they made to the song was the lyrics.

the only reason it took them 20 years to notice was bc they dont listen to that shit, i know prescott

Well my dad is friends with the 3rd band member of the Knack.. and they say they haven't sued before this because they haven't listened to the song. Maybe they didn't listen to it cuz its just crap and they don't like rap. EVER THOUGHT OF THAT??

Well I just listened to that song by the Rogue Traders.. and I'm gonna have my dad call Prescott and ask if they gave them permission to have the music.. and if not u will probably be hearing of another lawsuit against them
