New Killers - "A Great Big Sled"

A Christmas song from The Killers! Just today, the band released their charity single to iTunes, in service of Bono's Africa-aiding (RED) campaign. But it's not just charity that's motivated Brandon to pen a yuletide tune. He told MTV:

I think people see us as these kind of coldhearted music machines, and we're really getting tired of that. They want somebody to be (Oasis frontman) Liam Gallagher, or they want someone to be an a**hole, and we're just not that big of a**holes. So I decided (writing a Christmas song) would be a nice way to show people that we've got a sense of humor. And that we weren't complete a**holes.
Oh Brandon nobody thinks your an a**hole! If you wanna hear the song but just can't find it in your heart to give up some money for (RED), head to Hype for a stream. (Seriously, should probably just buy it.) Is it just us, or is this the best Xmas song of the last 20 years?

"oi to the world" is a vandals song. a cover should not get credit for the best christmas song ever.

"Fairytale of New York," from 1987, so just under the 20-year wire!

Def just you. Here's a few written in the last 20 years:

Christmasland - The Spongetones (on the Black Vinyl comp Yuletunes)
Red Lights (Merry Christmas) - Dreams So Real
Christmastime - Aimee Mann (Just Say Noël version w/Michael Penn)
Let Me Sleep (It's Christmastime) - Some big band in Seattle
One Special Gift - Low
...and if you don't mind spot-on parody...
Chrsitmas Rhapsody - Pledge Drive

That's a start. This song is, however, the very best Killers Xmas song of the past 20 years. The other 19 were crap.

Seriously what the Fuck happened to Stereogum, I know with that Zune informercial things were getting bad.....but recently everything covered is just brutal. This vague writing style ain't working either (just how many new writers were brought on after your merger?) Scott your long-time readers are speaking, please listen to them.

Guys, his comment about it being the best christmas song in the last 20 years was not serious. It was a reference to Brandon Flowers when he said the Killers' new album was going to be the best album of the last 20 years..

It's really amazing to see just how out of touch this band is. Seriously, boys, no one thinks you're assholes. We think you're TALENTLESS DOUCHE BAGS. And, no, this song doesn't change that conclusion in the least.

Agree with joyce.t. Definitely too many cooks in the 'gum kitchen, although everyone's trying. Ads are easy to ignore, but lack of personality isn't. Why no official comment on the corporate takeover?

your love of the killers (while semi-excusable, I think a lot of us rank them as a guilty pleasure) has gotten out of control. this song is weaker than store-bought egg nog.

for recent xmas songs, I'll take the Raveonettes' "The Christmas Song". Reverb is always on my wishlist.

Once again, because people don't seem to like to read other comments, Stereogum is NOT serious about their christmas song being the best in the last 20 years. It was a reference to Brandon Flowers when he arrogantly said the Killers' new album was going to be the best album of the last 20 years.

yeah, scott, please listen to your readers. this is ridiculous. just because i'm an asshole who had alot of time on his hands this morning, i looked at the last week of posts in stereogum land. Of the almost 45 bands you covered last week, about 20 were big time corporate acts that most of your readers couldn't give 2 shits about (including the killers, my chemical romance, fantasia, britny, courtney love, fucking hinder). Of the discussion/musical interest posts, a full half of them were reposts of either lists or items from other blogs. since when did this become tmz lite?

this asshole agrees with joyce and corena. cut the shit and get back to your bread and butter: carping within the indie community.

yes, i was here for the 20 britney updates a day.

it used to be one person gushing over the stuff that he liked, and it just happened that a lot of that stuff was pretty cool music.

if you haven't noticed a change, then, oh well.

Jeez you guys are just a bunch of little whiners. Stereogum posts like 20 posts per day, so why don't you just focus on the 17 or so posts about the bands no one has ever heard of and skip over the ones about the Killers or whichever other bands are just so painful for you to even think about. No one is forcing you to read these articles for God's sake. Plus actually the Killers haven't been mentioned for quite a long time so I don't know what you're complaining about. And I can't believe you are bashing the band for an actually decent song that is 100% FOR CHARITY. I bet half of you didn't even listen to the song before you commented, or bothered to listen through the whole thing. Ugh.

Why doesn't he just make his music and not give a shit what anyone else says about the band?

He's so self conscious he drives me nuts.

Anyone would think he is trying to disguise the fact that his band produces nothing but try-hard indie anthems that are as flat as Keira Knightley...

i'm all for freedom of expression, but this is a charity single. while you might not find any merits in the song itself (most probably trashed it without even listening to it, as someone pointed out), please at least respect the fact that the song is for a good cause. yes, it's not the best christmas song released in the last twenty years, and yes, brandon needs to be taught a lesson (for as long as he lives! -- stereogum posters will make that their life's mission) for ever uttering the "twenty years" remark, but the band made an effort to help out a campaign that would hopefully save the lives of many african children. you haters could at least acknowledge that fact and ease up a bit.

i think i've figured out what is wrong. stereogum just doesn't seem personal anymore, it seems faceless. it doesn't seem like your cool friend letting you in on the latest cool stuff. i don't know, it's just different.

oh, and to the people who keep saying, 'stop whining,' you remind me of the people who tell me to stop questioning president bush for his actions. i only speak because i used to freakin' love stereogum. if i didn't care, i'd just move on.

I've been reading Stereogum for less than a year, and I've noticed it changed. Sure, there were plenty of posts about bigger bands and "brand-name" celebs, but they were obviously just for a little chuckle, and then it was time to discover new music. Now it's almost like VH1 bought Stereogum out, and decided this page would work better for celebrity gossip. Which, might I add, none of your readers care about. And do I need to say anything about the adds? Or even the tags? One glance at the tags shows you exactly how this site has changed.

come on its the killers. How can you not love them?! Does anyone remember Hot Fuss? seriously!!
Give credit when its due its for charity. and even though he is a morman(please kill them all execpt for Mr Flowers) and outspoken its not their fault they hit the big time. they had to earn their popularity like everyone as well and if you hate them because they are now "mainstream" you have a problem. The are cool and their music is good. Its just ashame that they dont write music just for you( sarcastic voice)how selfish of them. Get over it,
THE KILLERS!!!!THE KILLERS!!! THE KILLERS!!!

Aw, how sad... none of you like this song? I like all their music, thought this one was rather kickass. The reasoning behind penning the song was kinda lame, though.

I like how he says they're not "THAT big of a**holes".. nope, just a teeny bit. =P

This is the first I've heard of that "last 20 years" thingy, though. Makes me sad, Flowers always seemed like the quiet, geeky-but-nice-and-adorable type.

I realize that this is for comments, but is it necessary for people just to post bullshit about The Killers. I for one love them and I think that they are one of the best bands to come along in a very long time. At least they are doing something good with their fame. If you stupid ass little pieces of jealous shit want to talk shit about The Killers lets see you do what they can do. Until then get a life and go trash someone else who deserves it like The Fray or someone like that.

You people are a bunch of wankers. The Killers are one of the best bands around at the moment, they've released two unbelievable albums where near enough every song on the albums are fucking amazing.. now they release a christmas song for charity and you people start callin em 'douches' stop watching south park so much you bunch of sad cunts. The killers rule and why the fuck are you listening to their songs and posting about them if you don't like them.

Something about the Killers that does NOT jive for me. I don't think the band is cuddly and warm. Nor do I think they are majestic and grand. Not even cold. Just talentless hacks that somehow put 75% of the puzzle together and sell almost-decent stuff. This song lacks irony, lacks humor and lacks feel good Holiday warmth. If not for the video, I would not know it's a Christmas song.

PS the video has way too many hairy guys hugging each other. That is, for MY taste.
