Al Gore To Save The Environment Over 24 Hours, With At Least As Many Shitty Bands

Turns out Al Gore's worried about global warming! And his solution to the problem includes a series of concerts over 24 hours, held on all seven continents and going down on 07/07/07. He calls it "Live Earth" for the cause, we call it "The Anti-Coachella" for the lineup. The inconvenient truth about the bill:

Pharrell
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Foo Fighters
Snoop Dogg
Lenny Kravitz
Bon Jovi
Paolo Nutini
Sheryl Crow
AFI
Melissa Etheridge
John Mayer
Damien Rice
Corrine Bailey Rae
Duran Duran
Snow Patrol
John Legend
Black Eyed Peas
Akon
Enrique Iglesias
Fall Out Boy
Mana
Keane
Kelly Clarkson
Korn
Faith Hill and Tim McGraw
Ray LaMontagne
Robin Thicke
Kenna
It's like he can read our iPods! Great cause but c'mon Al, that might be the worst lineup ever. Good thing tickets are free if you drive a Hybrid.

Thats a bit harsh. He could have done much worse. Keane, Mayer, Rice, Chill Peppers, Snow Patrol, those are all decent bands. Throw the guy a bone, hes to busy saveing the world

Isn't the point of this to raise awareness of environmental issues? Yeah most of these bands suck, but they're popular, and I have a feeling that their purpose is to draw in as many people as possible and then inform them. So put Arcade Fire and !!! in there and whoo hoo you have a handful of indie kids who all probably recycle and ride bikes anyways. This way they can get the word out to the exhaust sucking flyover-staters who may learn a thing or two, so maybe you should pull your snotty head out of your ass and realize that he's probably smarter with this linup than you think.

are you all really going to sit here and let your views on music stifle the actual issue behind this? does anyone care if you don't like the bands playing? the line-up will obviously appeal to mainstream culture, which (you shouldn't forget) is a good thing for everyone.

I agree with B-rad. This post makes the people at Stereogum.com appear shallow, inconsiderate, and no better than the bands they are poking fun at. Gore is promoting a good cause which is hard to come by in this-day-in-age, and even if these bands aren't trendy enough for you guys at Gum, I have respect for them for supporting the cause (even if it weighs less than measurable processes). Take down your naive post. Boooo!!

Yeah, I was going to say that he's not trying to please indie kids with a nice little show, he's trying to raise awareness about global warming, and he's aiming for a larger demographic. People that like most of those bands make up a good hunk of the US, and he's just trying to get as many people as he can to understand what's going on. I personally think Al Gore needs to be commended for what he's doing rather than ridiculed for picking bands that most people like.

Wouldn't it make more sense to help climate change by holding thousands of smaller concerts all around the world at the same time? Encourage people to walk or ride their bikes or carpool to shows in their local venues. Instead of a few mega-shows where the masses will fly to, using up airplane fuel.

oh, good lord. could the people on this site prove their myopic pretentions any more clearly? al gore is an amazing, forward thinking world leader, and it makes sense to raise awareness through bands that are going to draw the biggest crowds possible, across as many musical genres and age groups as possible. as popular as arcade fire is, they're no match in reach for someone like fall out boy or rhcp. come on people--this is the future of the globe we're talking about. put away snottiness for just a second and realize that this is an amazing feat. gore is savvy, too--i'm sure that money will be raised to go to carbon offsets, and it will result in awareness and innovations that, in the long run, could have far greater benefit than the damage incurred by anyone travelling to this show.

Why is it snotty to suggest that all the bands listed -- even Fall Out Boy and RHCP -- participate in a global event that spans thousands of music venues around the world on the same night? I'd think it would still create the kind funds that a Live Aid/8 style concert would raise. I'm just asking as part of this discussion, and not trying to be a myopic pretentious or bash neither Al nor the listed bands.

I do actually wonder how much flying Al Gore does and how much of it is chartered because flying has a huge impact on the environment in just the short term, I mean hell I think his little movie even said that.

I think the cause is noble, but I think Al Gore just has a chip on his shoulder from losing to Bush, c'mon get over it, you were screwed over, however you live.

Be original and do something actually good Gore.

It's slightly ironic that what this festival is trying to promote people not to do is going to cause thousands and thousands to commit "the crime against nature".
There are going to be hundreds of band members flying about the place, thousands driving to the shows, thousands of high voltage lights and supposedly 2 billion teles watching the events. That's just the start of it. Add to the fact that very few are going to take the cause much more seriously because Cameron Diaz and a few multi-millionaire musicians say it's bad.

How are we supposed to drive electric cars when you have to plug them in to you house mains? Don't know about everyone else around the world, but I know I don't want to leave my front door open to plug in my car. Then it takes forever to charge up to get 50 miles, what happens if you want to go 100 miles away? You have to stay the night somewhere and hope they'll let you plug your car in? Where does the electricty come from? What happens to the batterys once they die? Do these green people seriously not think about things? These cars are no more useful to the world than the Americans have 2,000 nuclear bombs and "trustworthy" countries saying they'll rely on nuclear power in the future and share secrets with other countries yet threaten ones that try and use nuclear power.

What did George Bush say recently? Something about Iran wanting too much control/power and being threatening towards other countries? Again, irony. I think people need to concentrate more on relations around the world before worrying their little socks off about something they can't stop.

As predictable as the list is, it is exactly what it should be. This cause will attract large audiences. Someone posted above that he/she wasn't sure if this stereogum post isn't a parody of an ignorant indie blogger, and I have to agree. I've been coming to this site regularly for a couple years now, and this is the first instance for me of feeling like stereogum is acting like an indie snob, jabbing at mainstream music when it has the power to make a little positive change in the world. I'm fairly certain this is all for a cause instead of for getting more people to listen to Clipse or Arcade Fire.

This show is not meant to convert new fans to up-and-coming bands. It's about making a global statement, which means the roster has to appeal to the lowest common denominator. It's as simple as that. But may I suggest that the power conserved, the garbage not accumulated AND the toxins not released into the air (vis a vis) would be more beneficial to the environment than having this rather naive baby-boomer wet dream of a protest rally?

About the only thing this event may raise is “awareness” of this latest hysteria, because if you think any real money will be funneled to the “cause,” just ask some of the starving Africans how much their lives actually improved after the Geldof show.

Sure, somebody’s coffers will be filled, but this blip will fade from the radar as quickly as Live-Aid, Farm-Aid, Rainforest-Aid and that Ice Age scare from the 70’s.

But, hey, at least some people will remember Al Gore when he decides to run for office again.

dick tippious - Wahoo, 250 miles at it's optimum. The battery takes 3.5 hours to charge, you can only charge it 500 times, but they reckon it'll only last 100,000 miles. Not terrible, but it says nowhere how much it'll cost to get a new battery.

If they want electric cars to work well they need to make removable batterys and ones that can be swapped at a type of petrol station. That's when the things will be worth buying.

Anyway, that's kind of off subject.

It's not the worst line-up I've ever seen, but you've also got to keep in mind that those bands are going to be split across 7 continents, so chances are the actual shows will be terrible.

hi
I think Al Gore is doing a wonderful job to save the environment. No really realizes the damage and danger we're in. We are loosing all of the tress, polar bears are in endangered, and paper products are killing us for decenegration, which would take one plastic bag to melt away over 500 years. people don't realize where Al is coming from to save the earth. But little by little we are loosing our earth to accumulated trash, mess, air pollution, etc. Its all politics and money, but Al Gore is concern with our earth. I really don't blame him. At least he is doing something about it, and Bush isn't worried about the danger we are in. Its so sad to see this world in such a a mess. There is too much waste, electricity, gas, oil, food. Soon we won't have enough food and water on our store shelves. What will we do then? We will be fightening for food.
