The Stone Roses' Possible "Reunion" Gig

Reader Robert Z. wrote an email with the subject "Stone Roses One-off Gig?!?!" and a body consisting of the equally excited query "Is this shit true??!?!?!?" The supposed date for this reunion gig is this Friday in Manchester, and with the show so close (and nary a ripple in the music news), it seems entirely irresponsible to indulge this rumor. So let's dig in!

The source of the wisps of excitement appears to be albumvote, which yesterday ran a story titled "Stone Roses To Reform." So, there's that. Only, the article makes sure to state that it will be "key members" that will reunite at Friday's Versus Cancer benefit gig at the Manchester Evening News Arena. They reprint a quote from event organizer (and ex-Smiths bassist) Andy Rourke, told to Music News:

Both Mani and [New Order's Peter Hook] Hooky are going to be doing something with Echo and the Bunnymen, Mani's going to be doing something with Ian Brown, and the grand finale's going to be quite special.
So, a cautious tease of a Roses reunion finale, then? Sure enough, they're both listed on the flyer. We're gonna assume that Freebase -- a three-bass supergroup featuring Rourke, Hook, and Mani -- is playing the show, too. No official word on John Squire or Reni making the date, so avid Stone Roses watchers: How big a deal is this? Do Ian and Mani hook up often? If any of our UK readers make the gig, send us a postcard.

It's encouraging news, but I think the Roses' latter years were less than memorable.

Still, I'd kill to see them play that first album.

No big deal, it's no reunion, just Ian and Mani. It's Ian and John who've got issues.

Mani (and suppoedly Reni) guested on Unfinished Monkey Business and apparently he and Ian are still friends. Why not reunite, everyone else is doing it - but who'd be left to get back together next year?

I hope whoever they get to do sound for this gig can persuade Ian to wear in-ear monitors. I heard him on Later with Jool Holland and it was beyond embarassing. You can BET that's the major reason why John and Reni haven't joined up for a reunion yet.

I was the engineer for Ian Brown at Glastonbury two years ago and Mani joined him onstage, I heard someone say that Ian Brown asked Reni to come along and play but he told him to fuck off.

also Ian brown is shit live. He fucking moans all the time about the sound levels.

Ian and John are the ones that don't get along, though both have somewhat made overtures to the other at various points.

Mani has played with Ian several times that I know of, and John, Reni and Mani attended an Arthur Lee concert together a few years ago (nearly causing a riot).

Mr. Mounfield has also gone on the record saying that the only way the Roses would reform would be for charity, which this weekend's concert most definitely is.

no such luck, they did I Am The Resurrection as the finale and it's as offkey as I've ever heard him. Even Brown was smart enough to not attempt the chorus and just let the crowd sing. Call me when the Roses reunite with stadiums full of British people as their singer. That'd be fun as hell. Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiV0c9Bo1r8

the roses saved my youth from a musical wilderness, f*****g quality, granted ian's vocals aren't the best but the music and lyrics are class and they paved the way for countless indie bands and for that i'm eternally grateful. roses, i salute you!
