The Smashing Pumpkins Get A Mall-Punk Makeover
What better way to welcome back Billy and Jimmy than with a stick of eyeliner. MySpace Records is organizing a Smashing Pumpkins tribute album for which participating bands will premiere their respective contributions via their MySpace pages on May 14th, followed by a CD packaged for free with the July issue of guess-which-magazine (Hint: SPIN). Just yesterday, The Academy Is..., Deftones, Hawthorne Heights, and 30 Seconds To Mars were added ot the project, making the lineup something like this:
Panic! at the Disco - "Tonight, Tonight"Still no word on a "proper" release, though what they've got planned is plenty. Which song would you like to hear 30STM cover (aside from "none")? They're still looking for an album title, too. Got ideas? We vote: The Infinite Sadness: A Terrible Emo Tribute To The Smashing Pumpkins.

Good ol' Ben Kweller will be the gem of this. He somehow snuck in one of the best tracks on last year's "This Bird has Flown" Beatles tribute, no easy feat on disk that housed Sufjan, Rougue Wave, and Cowboy Junkies. (and The Donnas... sigh.) His take on Revolver's "Wait" is solid as hell, and say what you will about his underwhelming s/t disk, boy knows how to arrange. I'm down for at least that one track. Hawthorne Height covering "Bullet..." just reminds me of the Hullabalooza ep. of the Simpsons: "C'mon Lisa, depressing teenagers is like shooting fish in a barrel".

Deftones are one of the only if not "the only" good band on that list..they dominate MCR and Panic at the Disco..real artists like the Deftones have every right to cover a pumpkins song..and I cant wait to hear it!!!

Like most people agree with.. I am real excited about Ben Kweller's Today. But i think this is a great/bad lineup. I think THe New Amsterdams(ex-get up kids) have a very chill sounds and his voice isnt as gay as all of the other bands you are afraid to hear. I really think them choosing 33 is the best thing they could do and they are gonna do s ome justice. Now i am REALLY excited about Young Love doing 1979. Not only is it a great song, but it has quite a bit of electronics and soft rock and that is perfect for Young Love. Anybody who used to like Recover should be shitting their pants about this because Dan Keyes and everyone but the drummer of recover are going to help make this a very decent version hopefully. He has a good voice and there will be no justin timberlake comparisons if we already know the fuckin melody, lyrics, and song. I also think +44(mark from blink 182) wont be so bad because he really does not have a whiny makeup wearing personality or voice or anything. I think it will be a faster melodic deeper voiced take on the song and I am somewhat excited about how that could turn out. That being said... THe rest of these bands, with exceptions of a few i have never heard, really do not deserve to be signed to a lebel at ALL. I hear high shcool bands that are more talented and more real then HH, MCR, Academy Is..., or fuckin Panic in the Disco. However back in the day i used to love finding new shit through compilations and i know that there are some songs i will like and some that i will not. Thats just the way these are set up. Plus we live in a world where we can make mixes, or own an Ipod and we wont really have to ever listen to the other songs unless we feel like ruin shit for ourselves or just talkin shit in general. Why do yall hate this soo much. In fact its free with the mag and unless you go to each bands myspace then you wont ever have to know how bad this is going to be. Get real bitches
