The Beirut Fire Fantasy Perform "Gulag Orkestar" @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC 5/6/07

Those lucky enough to choose the first date of Zach Condon's sold-out three-night run at Bowery Ballroom Sunday evening got an eye full of horns and more for an encore. After a night opened by Final Fantasy, Beirut fended off the front-row females, offered witty retorts to reminders of the infamous Knitting Factory gig (has it only been a year??), and had the omnipresent string-master Owen Pallett backing him on violin duty. But during "Gulag Orkestar," Zach welcomed four from Arcade Fire (including the recognizable Richard Reed Parry and Will Butler) to form an orkestar large enough for two and a half all star indie rock softball teams. Thanks to reader Jason S. who sent in the videographic proof, you can enjoy the elbo.ws -kissed spectacle from the comfort of your laptops. Enjoy.

this was the most fun i've ever had at bowery. i'm glad i have a ticket for tonight too and i hope they bring out the orkestar again, even w/out arcade fire members it should be equally grand.

Seriously, whatever happened to SoCal getting some awesome surprises?

The last surprise we got was when Nick lost his voice for the Islands concert and it ended up turning into a Th' 'Corn Gangg show, and to this day I'm still not sure if it was a good surprise or a bad surprise.

But yeah, Zach needs to get his ass to the West Coast.

I can't even enjoy it. I just keep asking myself, "Why am I not there?". Thus, Stephbot's comment hits the spot.
