Cat Power Reveals Her Covers

Papermag spent a few days with Chan in Brooklyn and her home of five years, Miami, weaving through the ups, downs, uppers and downers that have colored Cat Power's extraordinary career to date. Between bits about kissing Jude Law in the forthcoming feature film My Blueberry Nights (also starring Norah Jones) and playing out Karl Lagerfeld slowly seducing Chan into a life of Chanel, Papermag gets a little info on the artists to whom Marshall will pay tribute on the covers album we're meant to see later this year:

For her next album of cover songs ("I love singing songs that I love. Even when I was younger, nervous, uncomfortable and emotionally disabled, I always felt more freedom singing covers because it's not really my material"), which she starts work on in April, Marshall will record another Dylan song, as well as songs by Hank Williams, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Kitty Wells, Duke Ellington and Fairport Convention. She tells me she's trying to get Keith Richards to play on some of the tracks with her. After that, she plans to hole up on an island somewhere to write songs for Sun, a new album featuring all original material.
That's the informative bit, but head over for more on Cat Power eating food off of strangers' plates in restaurants and how her V Is For Vendetta soundtrack money led to her new life with Lagerfeld.

Cat Marshall is so terrible. She can't sing. She should go be a model and die of emphysema.

I love Chan--and what a great photo. Her version of "Still In Love with You" off of Myra Lee is still one of my favorite songs, ever, and even as a Southern boy I have to say that it way trumps the original.

Okay, 'Gum, second request: PLEASE BAN/BLOCK THE SPAMMER ROCHELLE NIKITA. Patrol yr comments.

As soon as Bob Dylan passes away in another 100 years or so.... Chan will be my wife. Sorry BJ

I agree with the guy who said Chan sucks. Artists who treat their own fans with such disrespect, especially during a live show, don't deserve their fame. The people who put up with it are equally to blame.

Hey, even though Rochelle Nikita thinks I can't sing and should die of emphysema (which, you know, is mean) and even though she spams every comment page on stereogum with moronic posts and the url of her shitty blog (which, you know, is annoying), she *is* the first person in about ten years to get my fucking name right.

Well, I've never seen her live, so I couldn't care less. :) The woman just has her demons and, unlike you and me, she's had to go on stage and perform with those demons. Frankly, from afar, I find that it makes her much more interesting. But I do admit, if I were in attendance of a show and she ruined it, I would be pissed.

Nonetheless, the woman has a beautiful voice, she writes interesting music, and I love her despite her faults. The end.

P.S. Rochelle can eff off and die.

Chan doesn't write for her fans. She performs the way she wants and writes what she wants. Her fans know that and should expect that. Love you Chan.

Rochelle Nikita (which sounds madeup) is a lonely, bitter, failed whore, whose attempts to be distinctive are sad.

if you check out Rochelle Nikita's blog, there's lots of links to some crap software site. is she some sort of horrible living spambot? rochelle, you do know the rel="nofollow" in all the links means you're getting absolutely no SEO boost from posting bullshit, right?

Hey!! Whoever posted that second CAT MARSHALL COMMENT was NOT me! I don't know who's spamming me or if somebody crapped my email address, but that's NOT ME! And by the way, yes, she can sing, and I don't wish deaths on people! This is somebody's idea of a sick joke, and they've been doing it all over!

Its too bad that she cultivated such a bad reputation concerning her live shows. From what I can tell a lot has changed since those days, she put on the most engaging concert I've ever attended hands down.

Hopefully she'll play some shows supporting the album.

the only reason you love her is because you are horny boys. i saw one woman post on here and she feels the same way i do. she's a talentless waifish hack who needs to go away. why not like aimee mann? she's got more talent in her left tit than chan does in her entire faux tanned body. go jerk off to some real porn, losers.

I disagree, since I heard her before I saw her, and that's why I'm looking for her stuff online. Beth, go calm down. No need to be bitter just because you're ugly.
