Katie Lied

Like you, we've been preoccupied with the race since November: did Katie Holmes pretend to run the NYC Marathon? Who is mystery runner #6074? Where was her sports bra? Did she use performance enhancing drugs? Etc.

We may never get to the bottom of the split times controversy, but finally we have some insight into what might've been playing on her headphones. With Mad Money getting pwned by the Cloverfield monster, and Tom Cruise getting pwned by Andrew Morton and teh internets, we take a moment to acknowledge the most recent contribution to iTunes Celebrity Playlist archive.

Katie's mix contains the essential tunes that helped the actress capture the "FREE SPIRIT" of her Mad Money character, Jackie. Her track-by-track commentary approaches a Jennifer Garner-level of insight.

After the jump: White Stripes, Tom Jones, and "It's Marvin Gaye!"

Sarah Silverman's Celebrity Playlist Establishes That, In At Least One Respect, She Has Little To Say

It's not so much that she likes the Killers (if they're good enough for Lou Reed...), but the supplemental commentary borders on a Jennifer Garner level of duh. To wit:

"In The Winter" - Janis Ian
"I love super dramatic songs. I love heartbreak."

"The Last Time I Saw Richard" - Joni Mitchell
"This song is so great. Yeah."

"All These Things I've Done" - The Killers
"I love the Killers."

And it goes on. Chalk it up to she's really busy making a funny TV show? That was the story last year when we asked her for her playlist. But nice work picking Wilco, Joni, Fiona, Billy Joel, Imperial Teen, Elvis Costello, and the Magnetic Fields, Sarah! We like them too. Check more of her insightful commentary here.

Ryan Adams Compiles A Heartbreaker Of A Playlist

Time to make that Easy Tiger press push, so DJ Reggie hooked up with the Apple folks to compile his ten-track celebrity playlist. And we're hoping he listened to very little of it while writing Easy Tiger. Sonic Youth, Nas, Bonnie Raitt, all good. But there are two that have us singing the rescue blues...

The Fray - "How To Save A Life"
This is perfect songwriting and anybody that says otherwise is a jerk. Amazing hair-raising stuff. I would write songs like this if I had an attention span, but they would have more wizards, problems, and space references, etc...

Jim Carrey On Idol, Gnarls, Britney's New 'Do

As part of a nauseatingly comprehensive press push for the new thriller The Number 23, Jim Carrey is at present in the TRL studios, pimping his R rated movie to the tweeners in the studio and the after-school set at home. We're watching 'cause ... well we have no good reason. As awkward and Scientological as the funny man has been on recent interviews, he did offer up a few choice off-the-cuff nuggets.

On Michael Jackson's rumored (and now officially denied) American Idol appearance:
Would be kinda fame deterrent, dontcha think? It's like you get up there and go, (with frightened face) "I'm not sure I want this anymore."
(In MJ falsetto): "I like your singing but your nose is too big."

On his favorite video, Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy":
I love the ink blot kinda thing, stained thing kinda happening. It's like a Rorschach test. I look at it and I think of like mommy with a ruler coming at me. (His elastic face sorta made this one.)

On Britney's head shaving incident:
Hey, they freaked out when Bob Dylan went electric, right?

That's the Brit quote of the day right there. When he's not busy being "clear," the guy can still deliver. Gonna see the new flick? We're not. But hopefully he'll have some thoughts on Spears going back to rehab.

UPDATE: Onward with the press push! Jim just put up a Celebrity Playlist. Guess how many songs he chose? A couple of our favorites after the jump.

Drew Barrymore's Favorite Music And Lyrics

When she's not busy writing songs for Jenny Lewis, you'll find darling Drew locked away, iPod on repeat, getting inspired. She recently shared her top tracks with an iTunes Celebrity Playlist, and hey, it's not bad! PB&J's "Young Folks," as expected ("I went and saw them live and the song sounded fantastic!"), Spank Rock 'cause it's the cool thing to do, Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah, Kings Of Leon -- and definitely no Strokes. Here's her list, peppered with her patented smiley-faced gushing.

1. "These Days" - Nico
"The song speaks for itself. It is so beautiful and puts you into an immediate mood."

2. "Children Of The Revolution" - Elton John, Ringo Starr & T.Rex
"I have always loved T.Rex! This song feels like a spirited anthem."

3. "Starlight" - Muse
"This whole album was always playing in '96 for me. This track drives me crazy!"

4. "The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth" - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
"Again, this whole album is terrific. But this song makes me dance on the pavement when I am walking with my iPod."

5. "Y Control" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
"Another song that such a great mood to it. Sad. Sexy. Soulful"

Meeting Deerhoof Is Easy

Radiohead are nice guys after all. Especially if you're in a band on the verge of putting out an awesome record. Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier recently told a tale of mutual admiration that will warm the hearts of 'hoof and 'head fans alike (via Gigwise):

Everybody knows what an uncommon live group [Radiohead] are, and even with years of buildup and knowing there was no way they could live up to the legend, they were so much better than even my highest expectation that my whole outlook on the world had to be immediately revised.

But what people might not know is that they are so great in person. All five of them, and everyone in their enormous crew, were all so sweet to us. They really supported our music.

I do not expect this sort of treatment from any band, let alone a band on the level of Radiohead. They are disproving every truism about how famous people are supposed to act, and that taught us a beautiful lesson.

Whatever lesson that was, Satomi, John, and Greg learned it well. Since our first listen, Friend Opportunity has been high on our list for '07. But don't take our word; listen to it at Spinner. Just one more reason why we want a list of the contents of Thom and Jonny's iPods.

UPDATE: Coincidences are the bestest. Just today iTunes posted Thom's celebrity playlist! Head here for the full list, wherein Thom reveals his picks for '06: "[Drum's Not Dead] and Spank Rock's YoYoYoYoYoYo are my fav records last year." See, we're not so different after all, Thom you gifted alien. (Thanks, Seth!)

Kevin Smith's Aborted iTunes Playlist

Apple loves asking celebs to list their fave songs, and we love to admire (laugh) at them. But when Kevin Smith turned in his, he ran into problems. According to Kev, Apple said the list was "the best they’ve ever received," but that they "don't have the space for comments that run that long." When asked to edit, Smith nixed the endeavor, but went and posted it on Silent Bob Speaks.

Of course we here have no problems with "comments that run long," so feast on the Celebrity Playlist that never was. And if you get bored, here's Kevin's lesson learned: "Never ask a fat non-celeb with over-compensation issues that stem from having a little cock and too much lard hanging from every appendage (except the aforementioned cock) to do a Celebrity Playlist."

Track: Cold Sweat (Live (1968/ Dallas Memorial Auditorium))
Artist: James Brown
Album: Say It Live and Loud: Live in Dallas 08.26.68

This is James Brown doing his best Eddie-Murphy-Doing-James-Brown impression nearly twenty years in advance of Eddie Murphy actually doing any James Brown impression. It’s one of the greatest live recordings of a single in history, and with a running time of twelve minutes and fifty one seconds, you’d be hard pressed to find a better bargain for ninety nine cents on iTunes. It’s like getting four songs for the price of one! If you act now, we’ll throw in a set of steak knives.

Track: Unsent
Artist: Alanis Morissette
Album: Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie

I love songs about loss and the road not traveled, and I love Alanis Morissette, so this track is right up my alley. This chick sings her guts out, but more than that, she’s an awesome, almost cinematic writer: you can practically “see” the story she’s singing. And, my God, you can certainly feel it: if you don’t identify with her regret in some small way when she belts out the line “What was wroooooong with meeeeeeee?” you’re a goddamned robot. This song feels like the woman stole pages out of a diary I forgot to keep, so personally do the lyrics punch me in my fat gut. We’ve all got a heartbreaking letter like this in us somewhere; mercifully, Ms. Morissette wrote it for us so we don’t have to self-examine too closely.

Granted, this comes a month too late and recycles many of your favorite Borat jokes ... but it doesn't recycle ALL of your favorite Borat jokes, so we thought you'd get some parting giggles along the way to the Kazakh character's descent to irretrievable overexposure. (Via Cornerstone):
