Islands In The Street

Last night we took in Dresden Dolls at Webster (review forthcoming), and while that was awesome, now comes word that a rock show considerably less conventional was happening downtown.

Islands played Avalon, and after a 20 minute-encore of "Swans (Life After Death)," led the audience out of the club, pied-piper-style, into the rainy Manhattan streets and continued the performance as Avalon shut its doors.

KevChino.com, who provides the above photo, reports:

Donning his acoustic guitar, Nick led the crowd outside with Jamie carrying his tom drum. The band and crowd made it around the block but were denied re-entry by the club's security. Bus Driver then joined the crowd for a street party rap. The crowd cheered "too legit to quit!" and "Out of the club into the streets, The Night of the Islands can't be beat!" before being dispersed into the night.
Check out Kev's video @ YouTube too. Very cool.

They (Islands)will be back in Austin soon, I really want to check them out. Maybe they will do the same here or play my house or something...

The Islands show was amazing! The security guards were really obnoxious but what can you do?

They did this first on Friday in Northampton, MA. Jamie walked out of the Iron Horse banging his tom drum, and the rest of the band left the stage. Yoni Wolf from Why? then told everyone that the show would continue outside and when we got out there they were having a jam on the sidewalk, but Nick went to the tour bus. The band then moved to the parking lot where they got on top of cars and started dancing. The band then started marching and leading the crowd through the streets of Northampton. Unfortunately Alex Chow was jumping on my friend's car who drove us to the show and dented the roof a bit, but he was sorry about it and Nick came out to check out the damage while the rest of the band and the huge crowd where off in the streets somewhere. I got to talk to Nick for a few, and he said Abominable Snowman would be on the next album.

The crowd, led by Jamie, then returned to the parking lot with the tour bus next to the Iron Horse and jammed out some more before the police showed up. A "Fuck the Police" chant started, but Jamie talked to the cops and all was cool. He then tried to get everyone to agree on where to party, but they just kind of walked around Northampton some more before those remaining went on the tour bus and hung out until the early morning.

So yeah, Islands put on a pretty rad show I'd say.

On 4-20, in Providence's Living Room, the band led us outside, during the concert, to a playground! In the cold weather Nick declared a shirts vs. skins game, but most of the crowd was too dumbfounded. I joined the skins team, against Islands and Why?, and it was amazing! I scored a basket against Nick Diamonds!

Islands was ok... some of their antics at the end seemed pretty contrived.

WHY? was actually the best band of the evening. Yoni is a madman and their musicianship as merely a three-piece band far outshined the 9 or 10 people muddying up the sound for Islands.

peace.

Sufjan Stevens was actually at this show. He was walking around with his hair hanging out of the hole in the back of his baseball cap. There was this pitchfork writer girl stalking him around just watching him and not saying anything.

lol, nice.. were it not for the writer's insistence during an 'actual' conversation with the aforementioned 'guy' that she was indeed stalking Sufjan Stevens around the venue.

i think the whole thing was contrived and a weak ploy to get attention

BAH HUMBUG!

Here Here, I agree with dumb. the pf writer person should really lay off stalking indie celebs while they're trying to watch live music. if she needs attention so badly she should just write a new review for da fork.

Nick Diamonds also promised the audience that he'd lead them to milk and cookies after the show, a la Andy Kaufman. After their street performance, the band locked themselves in the bus, as kids began to chant "milk and cookies" and pound on the door.

Hah... reminds me of seeing the Arcade Fire at the Hillside Festival in Guelph, Ontario - when they finished their set, they walked single file through the massive crowd singing "Wake Up" and led everyone over to the drum circle. ;)
Fun stuff.

Not dumb! The ex-Unicorns people are true showmen. Don't people want to see a show when they go to a show?

here's a link to another islands video i found on youtube. it shows more of the actually marching, but also gets a little strange and heavyhanded at the end, unfort. but, anyway, its pretty fun looking. i wish i was there.

Yeah, it was fun, but Nick really needs to work on his stage banter, especially if he's sharing the bill with Cadence Weapon and Why?. In terms of humor, Islands was by far the weakest performance. Also in terms of music.
I agree that Why? was spectacular. I wish they'd played a longer set.

Three phrases should be among the most common in our daily usage. They are: Thank you, I am grateful and I appreciate.
