Hilary Duff Appropriates Depeche Mode On New Single "Reach Out"

And guess which Depeche tune she uses? Granted and given, pop tarts 'n' P. Diddy get our attention for a second when they raid and repurpose nearly entire '80s ditties toward their own, nefarious ends ... but not in a good way. Where does it all stop? Not with Hilary Duff. These days find Hil treating her live audiences to "Reach Out," built upon the transubstantiation of "Personal Jesus" into a forgettably "sexy" pop number, adorned with militaristic background dancers and not much in the melody. Clearly she's hoping for a Rihanna-meets-"Tainted Love" styled transformation, but it doesn't play like that. Get yr cringe on...

Not Duff's first bout of '80s mining, either. Where to next?

I suppose it's okay considering her tweener fanbase has no clue what a Depeche Mode is. Is it an Indian lightswitch? A desert with a scoop of ice cream? Who knows?

There can't be too many jobs that are more shameful than being in Hilary Duff's backup band.

I think she actually REappropriated Depeche Mode... I mean, if you're gonna get all "po-mo speak" on our asses, young Stereogum... see synonymns: Hillary Duff, "covers," "plays a song by," "will never be," Depeche Mode. Maybe her bass player was just really high on goof balls and forgot what band he was in.

@Boozey Hooker: Um, what?
appropriate
http://www.bartleby.com/61/42/A0384200.html
As a transitive verb: 2. To take possession of or make use of exclusively for oneself, often without permission: "Lee appropriated my unread newspaper and never returned it."

So if Stereogum is wrong to use the word appropriate, it's only because Ms. Duff can't use "Personal Jesus" exclusively for herself.

Bartleby.com has nothing for 'reappropriate'. The meaning of that word closest to what you seem to be saying (especially since you wrote "'po-mo speak'") is from the Wikipedia entry for Reappropriation:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reappropriation
Reappropriation is the cultural process by which a group reclaims—re-appropriates—terms or artifacts that were previously used in a way disparaging of that group.

What group does "Personal Jesus" disparage?

Either do a straight up cover of a song, or come up with a new guitar riff. Stop stealing parts of songs.
