Inside The Rockers Studio: The Whigs

Straight outta Athens, Georgia come The Whigs, a trio with the dig-worthy debut Give 'Em All A Fat Lip. Yes, Brian from Rolling Stone told us to check 'em out ages ago, but better late than never, we say. Things have moved fast for these guys, having recorded their album, signed to ATO records, and been named as one of RS's artists to watch, all within a year. (We know that list doesn't hold much sway these days but, here, they got it right.) We love the Westerburg vibe on "Violet Furs," the woozy, alt-country melody of "Written Invasion," and can't get enough of this one:

The Whigs - "Technology" (MP3)

More to listen to at MySpace.

And here The Whigs tackle the ten questions we love asking, while rhapsodizing about York Peppermint Pattys. (For the record, we, too, think that Pattys are sensational.)

THE WHIGS
1. What is your favorite word?
YOWP

2. What is your least favorite word?
ZAMBOOKI

3. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
SINCERITY

4. What turns you off?
INSINCERITY

5. What is your favorite curse word?
FUCK

6. What sound or noise do you love?
THE BREAKING OR SEPARATION OF A YORK PEPPERMINT PATTY. IF YOU HAVEN'T HEARD IT ... DO IT.

7. What sound or noise do you hate?
THE NOISE A SPEAKER / STEREO MAKES WHEN YOUR CELL PHONE IS LOCATED NEAR ONE AND IT RINGS.

8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
PRO GOLFER

9. What profession would you not like to do?
ANYTHING IN A CUBICLE

10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
THAT I GET TO STAY THERE.

I've said it before, and I will repeat it again: I hate this band simply because they should know better - I mean, ever heard of Afghan Whigs? One “Whigs” band name too many. It's like calling your band The Lips or The Pumpkins.

You are damn right, witz! I got all excited only to find it was these douchebags. They need a new name pronto! No stealing from the greatest band of the 90s just for a little recognition! I don't even want to hear it, Dulli should sue the fuckers!!!!

What's wrong with the word "Zambooki"? It's rather whimsical.

You know, you are absolutely right. I judge all bands by their names even before I hear their music. If I don't like the band name... I won't even listen.

same goes with the following: the beach BOYS and the beastie BOYS, MINUS the bear and plus/MINUS, KINGS OF convenience and KINGS OF leon, ELLIOT smith and missy ELLIOT....

I hope you catch my sarcasm. You guys are missing out on a great band with a great album and an amazing live show (so i hear) for a very very ridiculous reason.

Not really a fair argument there. Those are all much more common words. How often do you see the word Whig? Add to that the fact that the Afghan Whigs have been informally called "The Whigs" by their fans for years, and it is a pretty close call.

That said, while the name bothered me at first, once I heard a couple songs I pretty much forgot about it. The Whigs kick ass, and in a totally non-Afghan Whigs way.

You guys should check out The Gates of Berlin. Another great band from Georgia and in my opinion even better. link on my name to their site.
