New Battles - "Tonto (Four Tet Remix)" (Stereogum Premiere)
As we rumble through the music world's Q4, you're gonna start seeing a lot more remixes, special EPs, free live cuts, etc. from bands with earlier quarter LP releases; think of 'em as a gentle nudge as you begin to make your year-end best-album lists. Although jogging your Mirrored memory won't really require too much prodding, Battles and Warp are set to release a killer EP anyway, built around the excellent, X-Files-esque vid-treated single "Tonto." Along with the original and a live version from FRF '07, the Tonto+ EP is slinging a rad remix from Kompakt snip-and-paste man/P4K Fest champion the Field, who weaves the track into something recognizable only as a Field song, and a similarly killer reworking by Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet). The Fridge man's turn bubbles and rumbles up front, kicks in with the same guitar riff, gets nice and house-y come those ritualistic nonsensical rain dance chants, and breaks for a minute before coming back with some hard kit work at the six-minute mark. (Yes, six-minute mark; it clocks in at nine-plus).

wow what happens when you take two boring bands and combine efforts? shit.
that sucked.
Score = 0
Well if you don't like either band, why would listen to it?

Love both bands, but not finding much to like in this remix. Reminding me I should listen to Mirrored once a day. Thanks though.

That sucked. Battles and Four Tet sucks. Why listen to false musicians when you can listen to the truly innovative, the Arcade Fire?

LOL @ "false musicians"
Four Tet is brilliant. Digging this, the Field remix is good too.

first 1/2 reminds me of the music in the original terminator movie. maybe they fell asleep watching it.

I know I am a bit late to weigh into this discussion but for any other late stumblers, my two cents...
Searing, Atmospheric, Brooding.
Well worth it for those with half an open-mind, an attention-span and an appreciation for well-crafted densely layered masterpieces.
Esp. in regards to the unrelenting Four-Tet Remix.
(Ben "Trucker"'s re-do of The Rapture's 'The Sound' is the only other remix I heard last week that comes close to matching the epic nature produced by Four-tet on this track. But the building of noise is more stilted on that, opting for cheap thrilling cuts to brash vocals and greedy synth bursts...rather than the more subtle imposing approach that creeps up and washes over you in the Four-Tet Remix.)

four tet makes better music than your fifth dimensional potential...your face is false by the way
Score = 0
the four tet one is the pick, it has virtuoso construction but the esoteric vocals that come in about halfway detract from the majesty...
but then it gets back on track when most of the 'humming' goes, its like how LCD's stuff would be improved a zillion times taking out the vocals...
they just ruin everything...even chopped up, fragmented and spat out in indian like hums.
its not so much overbearing in this, but more an annoying distraction...like a massive mole suddenly emerging in the middle of a beauty's flawless profile.
how crude i know but just, just,
just cut it out...
(no not one of those 'beauty marks' but an ugly as f*ck growth that protudes a cm or so from the girls relief and consumes inches of face)
