New Jens Lekman - "Friday Night At The Drive In Bingo" (And Night Falls Over Kortedala Album Art)

"Gonna gather up a few of my friends," sings Jens Lekman on the first single from the forthcoming Night Falls Over Kortedala, which is just he did for his third LP, rounding up Frida Hyvonen and El Perro Del Mar to guest on the Swede-pleasing record. The record's also the not-so-silent Jens's sonic goodbye card to the Kortedala neighborhood of Gothenburg, Sweden which he calls home. He writes (via P4K):

What a depressing suburban hell this place is. Everyone goes to bed at nine, after that you can't see one single window lit up. You can walk for hours without meeting one single person. I used to like that, 'cause it meant I could go for endless walks and pretend the world was my own and I was the only one in it. But after a while I found out the hard way that there were others who couldn't sleep at night ... In Kortedala everyone's minding their own business. And I'm slowly turning into one of them so as soon as I've finished this record I will get the hell out of here.
There's also a bit about how Jens gets mugged on the regular, but we know your hearts can't bare to read it (just head over if you must). No, we're just gonna present you with a download of the swingin' single from the record, with Jens painting his "tiny tiny ... Swedish country town" with a '50s brush as an apparently idyllic place to chill-out and play bingo -- 'til you encounter the "narrow mind"s, mind. When the bridge comes and those strings set in, the illusion's revealed. Oh you're so subversive, Jens.

I'm not a huge fan of the Drive-in Bingo song, but I fully expect Night Falls... to be my favorite album of 2007.

I really like Jens Lenkman. He seems to be from the same school of sound as Adam Green.
In fact, they would probably both be in detention together.

Here comes Jens again: round two. I was one of many that found myself swept up by Jens' music upon hearing his previous album, Oh You're So Silent, Jens. In the past few years, that remains to me one of the better out-of-nowhere great album surprises. I quickly iTuned When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog and downloaded all of the songs he made available free on his website. It's been a while since I've listened to any of his stuff, but I'm ready for more. Friday Night... is exactly the kind of song I hope he would make next. He hasn't lost touch of his ability to write thoughtful songs that are incredibly easygoing on the surface. I hope his new slow songs continue to amaze lyrically.

I tried to like Jens when 'Oh Your So Silent' came out. But I find him really uninteresting and bland. It's the same feeling I get with Belle and Sabastian, which I think is a very similar group.

But hey, I'm glad you guys enjoy him.

coming from a swedish family, there's nothing quite like listening to a swede struggle with (or, ironically, master) the english language. Jens' lyrics are fabulous: anyone who rhymes "chilly" with "chili" isn't bland or uninteresting in my book.

Sounds like a rip-off of magnetic fields' "the luckiest guy on the lower east side", and suffers by comparison.

i'm pretty fond of jens past efforts, and i'm not usually one to defend john mayer, but the horn riff is pretty much note for note the guitar from "heart of life" off of continuum. no thanks.

oh no! you're right! i was wondering where i had heard that riff before. oh, please please PLEASE Jens, say it isn't so!!

that aside, i'm still going to count on Jens to deliver one of the sweetest albums of the year. and i do mean sweet. like honey butter. mm, delicious!

See this thread from jefito blog. Is this actually a G. Harisson or a L. Richie rip off?

I think you feel differnt about Jens depending on where you come from. In sweden you can really relate to some things that you cant do if youre from another country. I dont say that you cant relate to anything but for exampel The cold swedish winter.
And I believe that his english here sound like a very good swedish-english.

For everyone who doesnt like Jens and Belle and Sebastian:
Maybe you shouldnt be listening to them?

I have to agree with gladiolus. in sweden he´s one of and I would say the only one of the artists who in a totally sincere way can communicate the ambience and feelings here. by that, i mean the feelings that we share all over the globe but we in sweden can relate in the way he poetically communicates this, we understand the references and the subversive feelings. i wouldn´t say you don´t do that, tough, but maybe it´s easier for us to understand the poeticness in some aspects. hope not, but anyways.

I dunno, personally it was one of my favourite tunes from the LP, but I'm funny like that. I'm just biased maybe because I like Bingo and it's great to have songs about my game! :)
