New New Pornographers - "My Rights Versus Yours"

Carl and the Pornos (minus Neko and Bejar) brought their new album cover but none of the record's tunes with them to Coachella, so "My Rights Versus Yours" is our first taste as it is yours from the forthcoming full-length Challengers. The track dashes some Beach Boys (yes the reference point of choice for '07 indie) with the Twin Cinema power-pop chugging we all adore. (via Buy Early Get Now)

The New Pornographers - "My Rights Versus Yours" (MP3)

Challengers is out 8/21 on Matador.

RELATED: Neko sub (and Carl Newman niece) Kathryn Calder's band Immaculate Machine has their second full-length Fables out on 6/12 on Mint, and we're spinning "Dear Confessor" next to non-stop these days. Have a listen at Hype for proof that quality indie-pop runs in the blood.

Wow it is very very BORING (especially for a single!)...and I love New Porn. I hope the rest is better...a huge miss here.

Really? I think it's pretty damned gorgeous. Not as good as that Immaculate Machine song, but it's lovely.

Its a good song! It doesn't all have to be "Dance, Dance" now does it? Lol
This is a brilliant track, I cannot wait for "Challenger"!

I thought the 07 indie reference point was the Boss?

No it doesn't have to be all "dance, dance" but, for a single, it should catch people's attention and I just don't think this one does it (especially for a great band thats been around for awhile now and still relatively unknown). For example "Bones of an Idol" isn't dancy yet it is catchy. I don't know but I don't see this one growing on me...

Springsteen is one of those permanent reference points, kinda like Dylan.

Is this really a "single" proper? Or just a track from the new album. Does a band like New Pornos really need to release "singles" - is there some Top 40 station out there that actually anticipates a New Pornos "single"? In the U.S.? Really?

@drewo -- first single as in first band-sanctioned track from the record, the one that gets the press push and probably/maybe/whoknows video. was hoping for more from this one, but there are many more to come i guess.

Great track. Is it just me or does the fighter on Challengers' cover art bare a striking resemblance to Anchorman’s field reporter Brian Fantana?

Looks more like keyboardist Blaine Thurier to me.

Found it interesting

Okay. If not Brian Fantana, it sure as heck looks like Freddie Mercury...

Kathryn isn't a sub for Neko; she plays with the NP's whether or not Neko is there.
