New Smashing Pumpkins - "Tarantula"

Even though a lot of you have prematurely evaluated to completion based on the half-minute clip of "Tarantula" that popped up on Tuesday, now there's a shitty radio rip of the full track available for your enjoyment. Grab it at Deaf Indie Elephants (thanks for the tip, Yiyo).

And yes we're just gonna keep posting this pic every time we mention Smashing Pumpkins this month.

UPDATE: If you'd rather take a listen before you download, take the jump for a full song stream. (Thanks, Alex)

I dunno. Sounds exactly like smething in between siamese dream and mellon collie to me. Definitely a lot fucking heavier than I expected. It's pretty good!

I can hear all the hipsters rejoice from seeing this post. They have another chance to make themselves look cool by bashing anything to do with the smashing pumpkins.

In all reality though, I think this song is pretty sick. I'm excited for the rest of album.

yeah, it's a lot better than that 30-second excerpt, but after it was over, i played Hello Kittycat and sighed longingly.

bashing the new pumpkins stuff hasn't got a thing to do with being a hipster, charles... it has to do with not liking stupid ideas.

Wow. This is MUCH better than I thought it'd be. I have a bit of hope for this record now!

As for the MCR comparison; you're utterly stupid. This is quality oldschool Pumpkins.

i agree with joe. it sounds like a lesser-quality song from the mid-nineties pumpkins. considerably more awesome than anyone had a right to expect after zwan and that solo album.

Must be the SP obligatory "ham-fisted metal tropes" song from the record.
Nothing special, but better than expected.
It would be much better than that if I were a Pumpkins obsessed 13 year old, like I was in '94.
It's terribly sad how low everyone's expectations are for this album.
Maybe it's because we are all too old, or not old enough, to let a potentially lazy rock album get past us.
Guess we will all find out.

I'm gonna come off like some sort of old ass pumpkins lover...which I am. Anyway...this song is absolutely better than 99% of anything that is out now. People always bitch when bands "change" like the pumpkins did after mellon collie...adore was actually a great album and the machina albums had some decent tracks on them. That being said this is a proper return and follow up to mellon collie. I guess for me it's sorta like going to a high school reunion and seeing your old girlfriend again and she looks hot and wants to bang you. that sounded dumb, but i'm almost drunk and have listened to the new song about 20 times.

Yeah Bobby, we know who Zwan is. This track rocks way harder than I thought it would. Lowered expectations nonwithstanding. Is it the best pumpkins song ever? Hell no! Is it a worthy pumpkins song? Yes!

This sounds really good. I was surprised at first by how hard it was, but then I thought about how they have had a tendency to kick off each album with a hard rocking single.

Definitely can't wait for the album.

haha, I thought MCR too! I''m pretty sure that makes me an asshole who listens to the radio way more now than in the 90s.

But hasn't it happened before that a band has been influenced by other bands that were influenced by them? What are the most notable ones you can think of?

historyman 68 -

One of the best examples I can think of is Depeche Mode being influenced by Nine Inch Nails in the 1990's while they were recording "Songs of Faith and Devotion". You can hear that NIN industrial flair throughout that entire album.

OMG! It's GOOD!

Yeah, screw the hipsters who hate 'bad ideas' like rock and roll. Go put on some weepy indie. But remember that Billy can trounce your favorite band at that game as well.

This song made my ears bleed. The rhythm guitar is like the 'doctor who' intro. And the lead was like nothing I've ever heard.

I WILL BUY HELL OUT OF THIS RECORD.

Very excited for the new record after listening to this one. Does any one else hear a lot of 80's hair metal in this track? I can't believe how fun this song is. See you kids at Virgin Fest!

I refuse to apologize!

I love it.

I am certain that critics, new listeners, and anyone else not wholly devoted to the band will probably also hate it, but I honestly don't care.

It reminds me of "Ugly" from TAFH...the progressions do at least. A little peppier, but I suppose you can't lead an angst ridden life forever. At least he's not trying to shove a rainbow up our ass like he did with ZWAN.

Also, everyone knows that the Pumpkins is really just Corgan...he had complete creative control of the group. Yes, it wouldn't be the same without Chamberlain's signature jungle drumming, but that's why he came back. The other members were stifled, and thusly unable to contribute too much (with some notable exceptions such as Soma and Mayonaise...I don't count the Iha vocal songs because those on the whole were terrible).

I will consider this reincarnation more valid than say...Guns 'n' Roses minus Slash.

At least they don't have Buckethead.

this is better than what most 90's holdover bands are doing. pearl jam? red hot chili peppers? perry ferell? r.e.m.? who's making better music than this from that era?

and as far as people being upset by the return to the smashing pumpkins moniker, why not bag on the fall? or the lemonheads? songwriters can do whatever they want name-wise, if they view it as a project.

This is pretty ordinary really. Like I say, it really reminds me of how good Gish and Siamese Dream was.

In regards to 90's bands making better music now..

- The Lemonheads, The Lemonheads
- Dinosaur Jr, Beyond
- Sonic Youth, Rather Ripped
- Nine Inch Nails, Year Zero

even Pearl Jam's stuff sounds better. The new Pumpkins stuff is just...hollow.

The new Lemonheads album is cack, saw them the other night and the best bit was when evan sang by himself at the end. The other guys are too tight for the lemonheads. Pearl Jam never did anything good after Vs. The new pumpkins song sounds good, not great, but a good start. Hurrah for Billy.

The new Lemonheads don't really exist beyond Evan. It's pretty much him and whatever band he's hired to back him up at that moment.

The first minute or so reminded me a lot of zwan with the awkward sounding, easy rhyming ("I don't wanna fight, every single night"), but as the song progressed, the guitar and drums took over from the lyrics, which really never solidified. I really loved the music, but the lyrics didn't impress me at all.

the lyrics are really good, its hard to understand them though. its either about music in general or maybe even about d'arcy and james.

Lyrics:

don’t want to fight
Every single night
Everything I want is in your eyes.

You and me go back
To places I don’t know to care
The spoils of all I got were left as scraps.

Don’t let me say this,
but you’re no worse than me,
It’s crazy.

We all are real, if real ever was, it’s just because
We all are real, and feel we've had enough,
I’m real, ‘cause someone gave us sound.

I wanna be there when you’re happy
I wanna love you when you’re sad.

Can’t stand the morning rain
Get out and take your place then
Can’t stand the blazing sun
Then close your eyes you’ll see
The angel dust.

I don’t want to be
Anything for these
A million watts of sound can’t compare.

Come along you’ll see the world
The pulse ripples, the crowd unfurls
The current starts to flow and they are on.

Oh it’s a white hot soul they want,
sinful.

You're real, if real ever was, it's just because
We all are real, every living soul
Yes I’m real, ‘cause someone gave us sound.

Don’t break the oath
I want to love you when you’re happy,
Don’t break this oath
I want to be there when you’re sad,
Please bring the pouring rain.

We all are real, as real as any ghost
So easy now,
We all are real, in every living soul,
Don't they know.

Can’t stand the blazing sun
Can’t stand the morning rain
Get out and take your place again.

I don’t want to be alone
I don’t want to be alone
I don’t want to be alone
Alone.

If it’s a white hot soul they want
It’s a black heart they’ll get.
