New Ween - "Your Party"

Big news came from Gene and Dean earlier this summer, the pride of New Hope announcing a new record -- their first in four years -- and a move to Rounder Records, to satisfy Dean's persistent wish to be on the same label that "put out those early George Thorogood records." Short lead time on that announcement (not that we're complaining); the brothers Ween's new LP La Cucaracha's out in just over two weeks. Ready to "Party"?

[Pic from Ween's set at Bonnaroo '07]

Ween are. The noise coming from those spending time with the cockroach record is that it's their best since Chocolate And Cheese which, given that C&C ranks alongside Quebec as our favorite, is very good news. To "Your Party," then, the first track we've had to hear, a groovy tune featuring David Sanborn with smoothed-up sax solos; it's that kind of party, the kind for which "the wife and I thank you very much," with candy, spices, tri-color pasta, cream puffs, and meat with "succulent juices." The kind you go home and dream about, sleeping next to your grateful wife. It's a vision of matrimonial bliss we're laughing at, and we can't quiet pin down why...

Ween - "Your Party" (MP3)

Ween's ninth LP La Cucaracha is out 10/23 on Rounder.

Sadly their worst album. Unlistenable, save two tracks.

You are not cool. Ween is cool, but you are not. You do not deserve to listen to their music. I hope you go deaf so you can never enjoy sound ever again.

I'm a Ween fan so I'm gonna buy it despite Rufus' premature evaluation. Thanks for the track!

What a rubbish; the worst time at their party.

It takes a few listens to get into it but this is an awesome album, way browner than Quebec

Yeah, the new Ween album is terrible, just terrible. Embarrassingly terrible. Monumentally terrible. And I like Ween.

Really, this album grow on you like a fungus... it is not as transitionally flowing as C&C or Guava but the herky-jerky genre-hop that is Cucaracha is music to MY ears... Luv it!!!!

I realize that Ween has been around much longer, but I feel like the Flight of the Conchords guys have pretty much rendered them useless. Their little game of fun-story-pop has been bettered by an HBO show.

Sad.

What's wrong with you people? This song is excellent and so is the entire album. Sheesh! Give Gener and Deaner a break, just enjoy the magic that is Ween and stop taking yourselves so seriously!

I like this song, and yes it does remind me of Conchords, but Ween were first.

Seriously.

Gener and Deaner would smack each and every one of you.
Do you really think they're trying to rip off someone else's style?
Or attempting to out do Flight of the Conchords? Do you really think they give a shit? The magic of Ween is they do what they love and you never no what to expect. I don't think they give much thought to whether the squares "get it" or not.

One of the best songs on the album.

SPIRITWALKER!!!

To the haters...Ween's been doin' your mama since the 80s brah! This record slays.

Ween maybe one of the most innovative rock bands of the past 15 years, and this song holds true to that characteristic. They are artists that are always trying to reinvent their sound and lyrics.

Unfortunately, I too have to agree with Karl's comments. This is a pretty weak album. Production is shite, most of the songs sound more like Weird Al than Ween...not the album I would choose to introduce friends to the (usual) brilliance of this band.

Still, psyched to see them in concert in a few weeks!

This new Ween album is gay. Not gay as in homosexual, but gay as in the way my sister used to use the word in high school. Gay as in 'it sucks'. Although I kind of like "Shamemaker" because it reminds me of Jilted John. Or whatever.

Hello…I'm writing from Rounder Records - if you're not familiar, we're one of the oldest, largest independent record labels in the US. We're putting out the new Ween album, "La Cucaracha." If you pre-order it from us (www.rounder.com/ween) you have the option to buy an exclusive, band-designed shirt.

I don’t mean to spam anyone and I don’t want to be "that guy" plastering message boards with ads. I'm just spreading the word about a great record from a great band. Promise. We're one of the good guys.

Let me know if you have any questions about Ween/Rounder/etc…thanks!

My wife and I were in the car when we first heard "Your Party". We were honestly not certain whether the song was a spoof of something else or not.

Absolutely hilarious. At times one of us will turn to the other and say something like "I had the best time at your party. I couldn't find the toilet paper so I used your towels." and the other will respond "The wife and I thank you - very much!"

If that's the type of content we can expect from the rest of the record, it might be worth it for the comedy.

Listening to ' Your Party ' for the first time and I just love it, it's pure ween and you just can't put your finger on it.
Do all those BS's, what do you want, that every album they bring out is exactly the same or what ? It is always Ween but yet somehow different and that rocks.
I just can't wait to buy and listen to the new album. There's a new flavor in town, it taste's like genius and it's called La Cucaracha !

are you mental? this album is fucking brizilliant!!
LEARNING TO LOVE is amazing, and OBJECT is my #1 favourite love song ever, it replaced moldy peaches'es 'anyone else but you' in my heart on the first listen.
Also the EP version of FRIENDS is better, but they are both great... it does for erasure-ish gaypop what Piss Up a Rope did for country.

Just heard At Your Party this morning. If I hadn't heard Kid Rock's All Summer Long over the weekend it would be the worst song I've heard in awhile. Banal and uninteresting. Lyrics sound like they came off one of those form X-mas letters you get each year from someone you couldn't care less about.

I have been listening to ween since 1990 and I could not imagine them making a shitty album. They have never had an album that remotely sucked in any way! I am sure it is very different sounding but still ween. Goin to the store tomorrow and going to have a listening party w/ some friends!!!! Bryan Gregg

I did a search to see if this was some spin-off project or spoof for the Flight of the Concords guys. Really quite silly, but still fun. Can't decide if I'll get annoyed after listening to it more than a couple of times, though. Probably is my guess.

Theres no way im going to be able to find this album in my town :o/. I've been a huge ween fan for a decadish now..i've really only found "my party" from the latest album but i like it, any genre of music ween tackles they conquer it. I can see this album being one of those the more you listen to the more you like. (nice comment about the growing and fungus heh)

I agree with Old Guy. I'll be honest—I'm an old f**t and I had never heard of Ween. When I heard "Your Party" this morning on WTMD (WTMD.org) – Towson University's (outside of Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A.) great radio station, I was sure it was Flight of the Conchords. Then I Googled the song, realized it was not FOTC, found this site, and listened to the song again (thank you Stereogum.com). If it was meant to be funny then it was mildly amusing. But if it was meant to be serious, then it was a little pompous and overblown. I guess I need to listen to more Ween to figure out if they are kidding or serious.

Let's see, Ween has been around since 1990 and Flight of the Whatever has been around, like what, six months. Give me a fucking break. This album is pure genius. Some people just weren't meant to understand.

Yes, often great artist are met with contempt and ridicule. That is a sign of true greatness. Van Gogh was a nobody in his lifetime. You know in this day and age, there are more people that just don't get what great art is all about. I mean, there's plenty of people that adore Ween, me included, but the masses have been spoon fed bland moldy vomit like Hinder and Velvet Revolver. Ween are a beacon of hope in an otherwise dark and uninteresting world.

you people don't get ween. jesus. what year is this? has music retrograded into such a conservative naive state that it can't understand something that is both amusing and true at the same time? do you think they would have gotten sanborn on board if they were just totally making a joke? i can't even believe we're having this conversation...this is so 1992. i am constantly shocked at the shallow understanding people have of music, art, the sublime, what true sincerity really is, etc. its like you believe some dude (ok the shins, i admit it) singing about ennuie in a fake british accent is sincere to you? i know im projecting but jesus fucking christ grow a couple, realize what is real and what is fake pap and relax with some smoothed out sanborn and stop worrying if its a joke or not. no one is making fun of you. GOD

that new album has grown on me just like all of their albums. That epic jam towards the end has one of the best riffs of all time in it. Epic solo too! Nothing like a great ween jam. The album is arranged in just the right order. Great songs throughout.

I have to say that "Your Party" makes me feel very uncomfortable. It's embarrassing to listen to. Very strange. I don't even care if it is a joke, it simply creeps me out.
Hey Weenfreaksuniteagainstdumbness, how old are you? You sound like an obsessed pre-teen. Settle down. Apparently no one (other than ween fans) have an "understanding of music, art, the sublime." Save it. No one cares how highly you think of yourself. Late.

Da bros have done it again.funda"mentall"-awsomonentalistical wakko shit. and its your party puts the cherry on top. no seriously- ween have never made an album where one knows what to expect. they have deffinately managed to create a new void. The seriousness or joke of making music.? they have always managed to merge both things together.i reccon. And I think no one has ever done it so well.(in pop)anyway. anyway music, brings out everyones shit.just make sure you dont dump it where you eat. peace. love and lots of good ol brown

My friend introduced me to Ween's "Your Party" for some reason. It is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. I know some fans will say "you just don't get Ween." But I also just don't get VD, thankfully.
