That Is Not My Beautiful Hot Dog Stand

Great interview with David Byrne at Pitchfork. Chris Dahlen asks all the right questions about Bush Of Ghosts, Imelda Marcos, and Tropicalia (we're seeing Os Mutantes on Friday!). But here's the kicker:

PITCHFORK: I just had one last question. A friend of mine played a show in Providence and went to a hot dog stand. They're in a band, so the hot dog stand guy says, "Oh, David Byrne used to work here. We've been here 30 years and he worked at this hot dog stand." And at this place, when they do the hot dogs, they line them up on their arm and they take the condiments and they go like this [I make a chopping gesture along my arm, as seen in the video for "Once in a Lifetime"]. "That's where he got that!"

DAVID BYRNE: I did work at a hot dog stand, a place called New York System, where you put the hot dogs on your arm like that. But I got that thing from, I saw these Japanese kids dancing in the park in Tokyo, these kind of rockabilly dancers, and then there were these kind of space cadet kids that had a completely different set of movements. I videotaped a bunch of them, and that's where I got that.

Likely story Dave.

Byrne (who is one of Stereogum's favorite artists EVER) appears with Café Tacuba on Red Hot & Latin: Redux, the 10th anniversary reissue of the Red Hot benefit album to fight AIDS in Latino communities. Even cooler is the cover of Talking Heads' "Crosseyed And Painless" by Brazilian Girls and Kevin Johansen. It's among five new bonus tracks on the rerelease. Stream it at myspace.com/redhotandlatin.

And a bonus cut. Don't call him Whitney, Bobby...

I lived in Providence and have eaten at the NY stystem many times and never heard that story. But I guess that isn't suprizing since there are lot of stories concerning the Talking Head in Providence and most aren't ture.

I'm still surprised that it wasn't Luaka Bop that reissued the Os Mutantes catalog.

Not to hate but how many times a week is Stereogum going to link to Pitchfork?

I thought that this was supposed to be the better website (at least according to Entertainment Weekly)?

Not to be a ninny, but the MP3 link isn't working and I've been trying that for a year now since I lost this show bootleg I had from May of that same year. Any chance of fixing it?
