"(Theme To) Stereogum"
Since it's holiday time we're gonna give the whole "don't sit at your computer with a stack of CDs" way of life a spin for a few days. (At our families' express request.) More importantly, it's gift-giving season, and we have something for you. A re-gift, actually.
Our friend Roger -- formerly of a band you might have heard of called THE CURE (also Psychedelic Furs, Thompson Twins, and Berlin), now brilliant solo artist -- offered to write a Stereogum theme song. A blog with a theme song?! Hells yes, we are charting exciting new territory here folks. And it's pathetic how giddy we got when we heard it. The track has master O'Donnell slowly fleshing out a wintry, synthy motif ... and it even has lyrics!
I lifted the lid on a silver boxRoger acknowledges he's not competing with Shakespeare there, but we think it's perfect. Particularly 'cause all we really want for Xmas is to be an adjective.
I know its not mine but I couldn't stop
Theres something inside that was meant for me
The songs inside that were made for meYou're so stereogum
Roger O'Donnell - "(Theme To) Stereogum" (MP3)
So with that, we get some sleep. While we're gone, this website with be updated by witches. And if Neon Bible leaks while we're away ... well, just feel free to share in the comments.

Okay, wow. Erin Lang's vocals are beautiful . . . this is a wonderful little bit of etherea. And I actually really like the lyrics!
Where is the inevitable punk remake?? And who shall do it?

Lose the vocals and it sounds like background music in a Michael Mann film.

Congratulations! Happy holidays. Now you must have a podcast with that theme song.

Nice tune, but don't you already have a theme song (Air's "Radio #1")?

Happy Holidays to Everyone!
The Indie Rock Cafe is putting together a special feature of indie Christmas songs, and any we can find for Haunika too, or whatever faith. What's important is we all try to spread harmony among all people not just this week, but hopefully all year.
IRC will be posting the Indie Rock Christmas Show in the next couple of days, so check back or email me if you want to know when it's published at
http://indierockcafe.com/mp3s/special_indie_rock_christmas.html
In the meantime, check out our spotlight feature of indie star Sufjan Stevens' Christmas Songs CD, a must-hear for indie or non-indie:

Wow, if you really wanted to include the Jews, you could have at least come close to the correct spelling of Hanukkah in your spam.

And, Jesus God in Heaven, please stop hawking that Sufjan Stevens. Everyone on the planet has heard it by now.

very nice!
just curious, am I the only one who read the lyrics to the tune of "This Twilight Garden" by the Cure before hearing the song? While picturing that scene from the movie Legend where the girl opens the silver box, and that creepy black dress is all dancing around and whatnot? just wondering.....

Actually, Mr. Stereogum, not exactly "charting exciting new territory," Oh No! Oh My! wrote IGIF a theme song back in June or so!
Not nearly as cool as having Roger O'Donnell do it, but still a nice gesture from a great indie pop band. If I remember correctly, the lyrics are:
I Guess I'm Floating straight into Kentucky in an air-balloon, an air balloon...
I Guess I'm Floating straight into Kentucky in an air-balloon, an air balloon...
Naaathhaannniieelll, he is single (he is single) girls should date him (girls should date him)...
How about dat shit?

I actually think the theme song is quite good. I expected pure shit, so it was a nice surprise. Cheers to charting new blogging territory. Also, thanks Fred for the link to the Beirut video! Muy bueno.
A lot of you have probably heard this but check out this hilarious rendition of "Oh Holy Night" on Mirr World.

I liked the song, but isn't a "theme tune" meant to be short and snappy, like 30 seconds long?
like:
LALA LA LA
It'a Stereogum
Like a magazine
But not as long.
merry xmas one and all.

You have an awesome blog, very thorough and inspirational. My blog is a few months old and seems to be doing well, but I would love to get it ramped up. Any suggestions on how to do such?
Keep up the great work.

Wow, an artful theme song? Doesn't that break some sort of rule?
I like it. You should hook it up so that it auto-starts the stream on your homepage, so if someone is already listening to music your theme song will intermingle with it, but only louder and better. Everyone loves that.
