New Shins - "Little Boxes" (Theme To Weeds)

Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky ... you know the tune. And as we sleuthed earlier this summer, the wilting Weeds is injecting some life into its series with the help of some notable bands taking turns covering the show's Malvina Reynolds-penned theme song. The fun got started with the Randy Newman edition kicking off the 8/13 season premiere, and soon enough it'll be a sweetly stripped take from those Wincing Shins. Said James Mercer:

We had a great time recording this. The main tracks are all our first take. It just went very smoothly. The song is one that I can very much identify with and a natural fit for the band.
Get your stream on at the show's site. Later weeks promise Man Man, Joan Baez, Donovan, Billy Bob Thornton, Michael Franti, The Individuals, Persephone's Bees, Silversun Pickups, Linkin Park, and possibly Matchbox 20. All promising, but they're gonna have to work hard to top Romany "Yo man why you always telling me to fuck a goat?" Malco's "Little Boxes" freestyle.

They've already used the versions from Kinky (this past week) and Angelique Kidjo (last week.)

Both of those have been the most interesting versions yet.

Not only would I hardly call Weeds "wilting," it's not like different bands doing the song is all that newsworthy.

Also you forgot the Decemberists, whose version will be on sometime this season.

was weeds ever really that good? another attempt to "expose the dark underbelly of suburbia"? snooze.

the only thing more boring and predictable than the show is the people they get to do these theme songs.

Oh No! Oh My! opened with a version of this song, their "first cover ever" when they played in San Francisco a week or so ago. Pretty appropriate because "Little Boxes" was written about Daly City.

I've seen every show and it is certainly getting worse by the episode. Its funny at times sure, but the normal housemom-dealer shtick is getting ridiculous now that the kids know about everything. Not to mention the dead DEA guy...the whole thing has jumped the shark at the end of last season.

Usually I'm in the minority on these Jump the Shark issues, so it's nice to see most reasonable folks understand that this show used to be much funnier. Now it's just dark and negative without any humor whatsoever
