That Song From Last Night's Six Feet Under

It's called "Breathe Me" by Sia. Interesting choice for the series finale. RightClickSaveAs and pretend you're Claire driving down the highway:
Sia - "Breathe Me" (MP3 Link Expired)

Bonus:
Sia - "Breathe Me (Mylo Remix)" (MP3 Link Expired)

Four Tet, Ulrich Schnauss, and Mr. Dan also have remixes worth searching out.

The Four Tet mix is my favorite

I wonder if this placement on the show on the soundtrack will do anything to find her excellent "Colour The Small One" album get a US release?

I met Sia last May at the Non-Comm radio convention in Louisville where she was performing with Zero 7. I had just imported the album and singles and asked her if the disc would come out here in the states. She said, at the time, that Interscope had the first option on the album (as she is on Go!Beat/Universal overseas) and that she wasn't sure if they were going to put it out or not.

Of course, a year has passed and while Interscope picked up the very deserving Feist album from Universal France, I'm still hoping that they give Sia a release as well...

Um... I did not -- thought it was tre fake, wondered if it was done on purpose. The cruiseship scene I could not take seriously at all. Which is a shame, as I would have sobbed the hardest for Rico, that little nugget of a man, had his death not been so hilariously phony.

The whole room burst out laughing when Billy came on.

I'm still getting over my grief for the end of the show!!

Oh great. Now I am going to start crying again.

I think the super-futuristic stuff was a little tongue-in-cheek. Six Feet Under always did have a sense of humor.

And yes - Billy talking about being "emotionally available" at 8 gazillion years old was pretty funny.

Not ashamed to admit I was touched, deeply. To have given us a happy ending for everyone in the first sixty minutes, and then to take everyone away in the last four minutes... it was harsh. As for the "future" costuming and set design, whatever. The horrible age-imitating make-up job? Whatever. This last episode was about saying goodbye, and accepting that everything ends, and everyone dies. And yes, I've been pretending I'm Claire all morning.

what was cool about the futuristic stuff was that they tried at all. and i agree it was tongue in cheek. it was supposed to be fresh and fun like when nate is belting out the christian rock in claire's dream. if you wanted something you could "take seriously" then i don't think you get the show at all.

The show became more depressing towards the end. I mean not just in the fact that it was ending, but because the storylines just became more tragic.

I think that's why I stopped watching religiously after the third season, I was far too depressed from just watching the show.

I have to say I'm in the "Six Feet Under" ="Pretentious Soap Opera" camp. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but I found the storylines and characters over-the-top in a punishingly depressing way. I also thought the show was a little simpleminded and aggressively preachy. But that's just my two cents.

Cried like the little bitch I am. I love that it was Claire we saw the ending through - after David, she's my favorite.

I liked the future stuff - but poor, poor Brenda still listening to Billy rant after all those years!!!!! Horrible way to die.

I am still a bit disappointed they never completely explained the Brenda/Billy thing. What happened when they were kids? Did they ever? Instead they played the 'Flowers In The Attic' tease, and then dropped it.

It was, essentially, a pay cable Soap Opera... but the subject matter and quality of writing and acting made it more then that.

I loved to make fun of it, but now I already miss it like the death of a dear friend I've become close to for the past six years. Last night was the funeral, and this morning is the hangover.

I'm glad they at least left one loose end - did mousey Maggie have Nate's baby or not?

Of note: HBO's soundtrack listing left off the Lyrics Born song ("I Changed My Mind") playing during Claire's going away party. It was also the ending song to Entourage's prior episode... maybe that's why they left it off this week's SFU listing.

I don't think 6 Feet Under is like a soap opera at all. Why? Because the actors are incredible. They allow viewers to capture and understand every complexity associated with their character. Ruth, David, Ricardo - doesn't get much better than that. I am glad they ended it with Claire too - she's really come into her own. Also glad to see that most deaths were from old age; they've all suffered enough.

Not sure about the whole cruise scene either; Ricardo deserved a better way to die. I was dying when I saw Billy! I was also happy to see that Claire and Brenda become close. Poor, poor David.

I guess any long-term show involving an ensemble cast could be considered soap opera-ish. That's just the nature of the show. If you were to take the high points from anyone's family life and broadcast it, it would probably seem like that, too. And if it wasn't very interesting, that's why they don't make television shows about completely "ordinary" people.

I am off to listen to that damn song again and try not to sob at my desk like the dork I am.

HBO captured lightening in a bottle with Sex in the City, The Sopranos and Six Feet Under and it is definitely sad to seem them all end one by one. I think it will be a while before a network can click on all cylinders like that again. Sunday nights won’t be the same!

Think what you will about it being a soap opera or not. I can understand why people could place it in that category; it is a continuing story of a group of characters - but we're missing the larger picture. Six Feet Under opened every door and touched every taboo known to man in its first episode and never looked back. Think about it: killing of a main character five minutes into the pilot, promiscuous sex, gay and bi-racial relationships, drugs - that is writing and acting which breaks the boundaries of what we are used to seeing as well as what we are comfortable seeing. You are introduced to characters you feel some real connection for, no matter how foreign they appear. You can't say that about a "soap opera."

Thank you Alan Ball for giving us a show that looked at things from a different perspective and thanks to a terrific cast who took the words on paper and transformed them into stories we will never forget. Six Feet Under is a show that stayed true to itself until the very end. For that, Six Feet Under deserves the ultimate praise.

Hmmm. Ted an asshole? What, as opposed to any of the people Claire met at art school? If you missed the fact that they were complete idiots, then I'd say you missed whole layers of this show. Ted was the first guy she met who wasn't a complete lunatic and he did everything right at the end, esp when she was drunk and he forgave her.

Fave SFU scene: A few years ago when David and Keith run into each other at the church and Keith tells David how beautiful and kind he is and David is so surprised to hear it. This show's hallmark is dragging viewers through complete hell and then giving them a few moments of beautiful dialog that kind of mend the whole thing.

As for the OC comparison, all I can do is laugh. Although I love Rachel Bilson. She is a wee kitten.

SIx Feet Under takes soap-operaesque plots and places them with realistic characters that real people can relate to. Think about it: no matter how much we learn in life, there are some lessons that take years, decades, or never get learned, and even when we want to change or think we have, we regress just enough to make it more of a struggle for ourselves and those around us. We spend our whole lives making the same mistakes again and again, learning a little at a time, stepping forward, then back, sometimes missing steps altogether. That's life. And it's serious. And it's not. And it's nuerotic. And it's irreverent. And sometimes it's cheesy as hell. SFU captures all those things really well, and that is why it rocks.

[Rico is not short for Ricardo, it's short for Federico.]

That being said, anyone comparing Six Feet Under to a soap opera has clearly never seen a soap opera before, as soap operas are completely and utterly ridiculous, the majority of actors are tolerable at best, there is very little complexity and there is NO consistency. If you disagree, watch an episode of Guiding Light/All My Children/etc. and tell us (oh wise ones) where these various similarities are.

Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot that the comments had little to do with reality and all to do with "shitting on that which is alternative yet too mainstream to enjoy".

I have to say that Six Feet Under is one of the best shows I have ever seen. I'm not really a T.V. kind of person, but this show had me from the first time I layed eyes on it, until the final credits rolled Sunday night. As far as the final episode, the last few minutes where Claire is driving and she sees the lives of everyone progress and eventually die was so beautiful. If you watched the 2 part commentery, Mr. Ball says that he was going to push the boundries and make us face something that Americans don't speak of. Death. I think the ending is so important because it makes us face the death of the show and the characters, but, at the same time, lets us explore their lives in snapshots of linear time. You see all of the people in various age groups and you can't help but think about people in your own lives that are Ruth's age to Claire's age. It didn't seem completly real to me until the last minute when Claire is in her room and you see all of her photos of Ted and David and Kieth and the picture of the ripped up face she did in art school. Then her eyes mute and you see Claire Simone Fisher 1983-2085 and it just slapped me right in the face. It made me think because I was born in 1983 as well and it just expressed that feeling of time as linear. I really connected to it. It was just...wow.... The song made it that much more heart wrenching and powerful too. I'm really going to miss Six Feet Under! Thank heavens for DVD, right!?!?

Right before we see Claire and Ted get married, we see a room full of family and friends. David is alone because Keith was gone at that point and Anthony and Durell are all grown up sitting on opposite sides of the front row. One sits next too another woman and a child, and the other in the foreground, sits holding another mans hand. Ahh... do we think little Anthony or Durell followed in his fathers footsteps?

It was neither pretentious or derivative, or any of the other things jaded people say because they think that is what is expected of them.

Anyone who does not see the level of quality in the writing here obviously did not grow up on reruns of "Three's Company".

No doubt those some people would find the drivel we were forced to watch in the 60's and 70's as
"groundbreaking"....give me a break.

It was good television, better than we have become accustomed to. Only people are pretentious.

In response to some earlier comments, it was extremely clear, during the montage, that (1) little Anthony was gay, that (2) Durrell was straight with wife and children, that (3) Brenda began dating again, that (4) Ted remained Claire's true love (there is no other reason that she would have ever associated herself with someone like him), that Ruth started her doggie-day care, that (5) all of the characters were finally able to live their lives as they wanted, and that (6) the death of Nate and the subsequent resolutions of the long-standing conflicts (Ruth-Brenda, Claire-Ruth, David--virtually everyone, Keith--his sons, Ruth-George, etc.--unfortunately Billy is incapable of resolving any of his conflicted relationships because he is some much of a freak) allowed these characters to throw off the weight of grief that had been caused by death and to, ultimately, allow them to live long, successful, and happy lives. Poor Keith in the end, though.

The ending of SUF was the most powerful piece of television that I have ever seen

I had a good laugh reading everyone's comments...the good and the bad. If Six Feet Under is soap-opera-ish, what does that say about the rest of the crap on TV?
I think it was likely the best show on TV of its kind and I will dearly miss it after all these years of eagerly anticipating it. It felt like an old friend and as though I somehow experienced all that they went through.
Terrible that it's ended but it had to. The finale was like no other and was really well done. Haunting, yet slightly hopeful, all the way to the end. Amazing. Fantasic. Good choice of song at the end too.

I'm still grieving, three days later.

The final montage was one of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen on a television show ... it rocked me to my core and had me bawling my eyes out--not just because I was grieving for lost friends (the Fishers and co.), but because of how it made me think of my own family and friends, and the indelible imprint they've made on my own life.

Three scenes stand out for me: 1) Ruth reconciling with Brenda on the steps was so uplifting and satisfying; 2) the family dinner near the end where they toast Nate showed me a family finally at ease with actually being a truly happy family unit--and how ironic that most in attendance weren't actually blood-relationed but were more of what we see as our extended family; and 3) that moment when David sees a vibrant, young and sexy Keith the moment before he dies. This last scene will live with me forever. I can only hope that the last vision I see before I die is that of my longtime partner.

OK, enough. I'm tearing up again, and the folks at work are going to wonder what the heck is wrong with me.

Thank you, Alan Ball, and to all the actors, writers, directors and support staff who gave us five seasons of TV's most amazing drama ever. You've left us at way too young an age, but we'll cherish our memories forever.

When this show ended I was blown away. All because of the final 5 minutes. I think a lot of it had to do with the song. I think if any other song is played the ending would have been good but I don't think it would have been as powerful as it was. I said to myself "that was the best freaking finale I have ever seen" It is great to know that so many others feel the same way. I can't get that song out of my head 3 days later and it still gives me goosebumps and gets me reary eyed and I am not that type of person to get like that over a movie or tv show. I think that says a lot.

I watched SFU religiously. I somewhat almost lost a boyfriend over how dedicated I was to it. (How SAD it THAT?) :P... Anyway, although I recognize that there is only so much more they can do with characters that show how fuct-up we all are, I will truly miss one of the best things to happen to television, as American Beauty was to cinema. To be honest, I thought the final episode was ULTRA-self-loathing, and over-dramatic.....BUT....the final 6 mins were VERY moving. The make-up was generally good and believable I thought [Even though it looked a little corny, it will probably get an Emmy nomination]. The fact that Claire got married to that guy felt good since he seemed to be the most down-to-earth and caring. I thought it was very good they showed David and Keith getting married. Ruth dying with this look from the Nates like "you'll be at peace with US now..." was beautiful. And David dying over reliving the vision of Keith was cute and moving. And I thought it was beautiful that they ended with Claire's 100-year-old blind eyes...I bawled randomly for the next 15 to 20 minutes at least. (And from the gay point of view, I liked that they showed Claire's boyf's butt earlier in the episode. He's not really my type, but man, is he CUTE!) And I will always mourn a show that will probably never have another reach it's magnitude.

Rant: I think it's stupid that, ever since Family Guy had a tiny little comment about Six Feet Under being "pretentious," everyone thinks they are perceived as intelligent and witty when they use their new big word.

Question: Why do you tink they didn't include George's death in the end?

^^yeah, interesting that they didn't show george's death, or maggie's for that matter.
Just reading the comments is making me tear up, what a weenie. And about Ted...opposites attract, he was a good man. Enough said.

I have been watching Six Feet Under religiously since it first came on. The characters grew on me and I found myself attached to this fictitious world, that I never expected to become attached to. For all of the people who believe this show was pretentious, this show was about life. For what life really is; happiness, depression, the ups, the downs, and all of the bullshit in between. On another note, I loved the season finale. I thought it was done well, and kept true to what the show was and what it was about. P.S. Stereogum, thank you so much for putting Sia's song Breathe Me on your website. Now I have a great song to listen to when I'm at work.

Losing Six Feet Under was a huge blow for me. Days later and I'm still balling just listening to Sia's song. How could you not fall in love with a show that dealt with losing as an everyday concept? It's a little ironic that the show dealt with losing people and things you loved when the show is now over. With the charming wit and characters you could connect with, how is this show not the best thing on TV?

I have been so haunted by its emotional ending. The last scenes where we see everyone being touched by death have forced me to acknowledge the reality, inevitability, and proximity of death. Watching Claire drive on what seemed an infinite road, unknowing when her final days would be, has left an imprint on me. Six Feet Under has given me a new appreciation for the brevity and fragility of life itself.
