Stars Let Us Into Their Bedroom After The War Months Early, Take It On The Road

Score another for bands getting creative with stemming the tides of leakage. Recently, the New Pornographers offered up a cool solution to folks jonesing for an immediate listen to Challengers, bundling select access to a pre-release album stream with each presale, and Stars has done 'em one better: They've digitally released In Our Bedroom After The War just a week-and-a-half after offering an advance track and announcing a September 25th street date, saying that "the line between the media and public is now complete grey" (preaching to the choir, Stars). Why give out advances that are sure to be torrented immediately thereafter? So four days after wrapping up the record, they put it out for sale starting yesterday. Here's an explanation, posted on Stars MySpace:

Traditional music business practice says we are to begin sending out copies of this album now. We give advance copies to print publications in hopes of securing features that coincide with our September date. We meet with radio stations in hopes of securing airplay. etc, etc.

Inevitably someone will leak the album.

Throughout this process, the most important people in this value chain, the fans, are given only two options - wait until September 25th to legally purchase the new album or choose from a variety of sources and download the album for free, at any time.

We hope you'll choose to support the band, and choose to pay for their album. However we don't think it's fair you should have to wait until September 25th to do so.

We believe that the line between the media and the public is now completely grey.
What is the difference between a writer for a big glossy music magazine and a student writing about their favourite bands on their blog? What differentiates a commercial radio station from someone adding a song to their lastfm channel? or their myspace page?

As such, we are making the new Stars album available for legal download today, four days after it's completion. The CD and double vinyl versions of the album will still be released on our official release date, September 25th. We hope you will continue to support music retailers should a physical album in all it's packaged glory be your choice of format.

It's our hope that given a clear, legal alternative to downloading music for free, you will choose to support the creators.

We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Buy it at iTunes or Arts & Crafts or feel even more guilty for pirating. Scroll down for the Stars dates.

I like the early digital release idea, but i'm going to save my money for the compact disc.

as for the album, anyone else thinking it's time that Stars pull a Camera Obscura and give all the vocal duties to Amy?

Again, you tag a post with a misspelling of Amy Millan's surname!

I love the idea, but unfortunately I really dislike iTunes, or any digital copy for that matter. I will surely be supporting my local record shop and forking out some cash, because I support the artists I like (and the shop), but I'm sure I'll be fighting the urge to download the thing beforehand.

the album is beautiful.

"this is the part where you save me,
this is the scene where you save the day,
why can't the ending be happy?
why must it always resolve this way..."

i bought the album off of arts&crafts.
but i'll buy the actual album as well.

I think it wouldn't be the stars without both of them. They're duets are some of the best I've heard. And the guy in Camera Obscura died I believe...so I don't think that's was really a decision on their behalf.

Give all vocal duties to Amy? That's retarded. What works about Stars--why you love them--is the sound created by both Torq and Amy independantly and together. She's got a great voice, sure...but it's awful whispery and light sometimes and there's no way she could give some of their lyrics the weight and gravity they deserve. So how about we trust them to do what they do best and just enjoy the results?

There is something very magically about Torq and Amy when they sing together. I would go out of my way to support this band so buying the album in stores, even after buying the tracks online for an advance listen, is something I will continue to do. That is if they promise to come back to Toronto for xmas. Just thinking about that Lee's gig gives me holiday goosebumps! I am loving the new album and spreading the word that the Stars continue to be the best.band.ever.

Torquil Campbell is an ASSHOLE! I agree give all vocal duties to Amy... Torq is full of himself, and to see them live is an embarassment. Torquil needs to GO FAR FAR AWAY.

I think Torquil Campbell is a self rightous idiot that needs a good but-kicking.
I cannot STAND him and think he needs to go far far away.

Amy would be so much better off without his constant NEED to be paid attention to or his competitiveness with her...
