Live Earth's Greatest Bits

Rather than stay in and watch Al's big day out, we decided to bounce around outside to enjoy the fresh air (or what's left of it). And Gore's right, it was totally hot outside! If you took it in, these wacky collabs won't be news for ya, but maybe they're worth another watch. Like this one, bringing lady Madonna together with Eugene and Serge of Gogol Bordello for "La Isla Bonita." Diggi-diggi-diggi-dhye.

Take the jump for a bunch more, including the mainstream wet dream of the Police/John Mayer/Kanye West on "Message In A Bottle" and a bassed up Spinal Tap jam.

The Police and Mayer's "Message In A Bottle" gets pretty great with Mr. Cain-yay West's appearance at about 2:20 (not that we can freestyle, but is that the worst Kanye rap ever or what?). It's cute that Kanye and John are BFF. And for bonus fun: check out the idiot at 01:22.

Here's Keith Urban and Alicia Keys doing some "Gimme Shelter" from the New York leg...

And most awesomely, Spinal Tap and every bass player in the known universe doing sentimental and tearjerking eco-ballad "Big Bottom."

If that's not enough Earthen awareness for ya, here's a bonus slate of links to keep you busy not doing work all day:

The Smashing Pumpkins - "Today"
Genesis - "Land Of Confusion"
Roger Waters And A Bunch Of Kids - "Another Brick In The Wall"
Foo Fighters - "Everlong"
Crowded House - "Something So Strong" (now with less bottles!)
Metalica - "Enter Sandman"
Bloc Party - "Banquet"
Kelly Clarkson - "Since U Been Gone"
Beastie Boys - "Sabotage"
Rihanna - "Umbrella"
Duran Duran - "Notorious"
Cat Stevens - "Wild World"
We Are Scientists Nunatak - "How Many People"

Don't think you get any more indie rock than playing to a bunch of penguins in Antarctica.

Wow. That Kanye clip is pretty hilllllariously bad. Honestly. I have friends who can rap better than that, and they wear pink hot pants. That has nothing to do with it really, but pink hot pants are pretty sweet. Plus, can Kanye say "Uh!" more than he already was please? One would think he was trying to be a walking rap cliche. Oh, wait! He is! GAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Not that you saw this on Bravo's awful coverage, but Kasabian's performance of "Club Foot" in London was fantastic. Other than that, the only things that really grabbed me were Crowded House's "Fall At Your Feet" and the Drum Cafe (? That's what their t-shirts said) in Johannesburg.

Yeah that Kanye rap was pretty atrocious. I'm a fan but my God that was terrible. It was funny when Sting mispronounced his name. Did anyone else catch that? Where can I see Crowded House Fall At Your Feet?

Jesus, rappers used to be able to freestyle, what happened?

Although, "we're going to elect John for Mayer" is hilariously awesome

Big props to bands like Arctic Monkeys for calling bullshit on the hypocritical, egotistical bunch of PR-freaks known as the music industry.

As if Gore or Kanye (who may have ended his career yesterday by ruining "Message in a Bottle") or Diddy is going to stop consuming 50X the amount of energy that they want us, the average people, to consume.

Do as I say, not as I do, right?

Yeah, Kanye was pretty much a waste of space. He needs to go away. John Mayer held his own though, so kudos to him. Must've been a rock'n'roll wet dream for him.

Spinal Tap is still fuckin' brilliant, though. Only they could get members of Metallica, James Blunt, Foo Fighters, Madonna, and the Beastie Boys on-stage together. Too bad the Pumpkins bassist was absent, they could've used a little estrogen-based cock-rock. Speaking of Adam Yauch, though, didn't he look thoroughly disinterested?

Thanks for the link to the Genesis footage! The video to "Land of Confusion" used to give me nightmares as a child.

I enjoyed Morrissey's gentle ribbing of Madonna during his between song banter on Monday. "Did you watch that Live Earth concert? Isn't it nice to see that Madonna wants to save the environment? She'd wear that adopted African child as a jacket if it was fashionable for fifteen minutes."

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...

Quit Your Day Job: Megafaun

Raleigh-via-Eau Clair BTW Megafaun debuted impressively earlier this year with Bury The Square. The trio nip-and-tuck experimental tendencies (tape splicing, white noise colliding with banjo, junkyard-laced spring reverb, screeching feedback at the tail end of a quiet back porch lament)...

Premature Evaluation: of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping

Skeletal Lamping is anything but skeletal. When we took a close listen to album closer "Id Engager" we mentioned it wasn't the strangest, most ambitious, or best tune on of Montreal's new one, but after absorbing the other 14 tracks,...
