Morrissey Hits NYC With New Tunes, Support Act
Who made it to Moz's five-nighter at Hammerstein this past week? The ever charming man kept it eventful, performing new material and kicking his opening act off the tour. We've already heard the new song not about Paris Hilton, "Throw Your Arms Around Paris." For those unsatisfied with the shitty bootleg video quality of the last one, try this less shitty bootleg quality from Friday night's performance (ending with a dude in the audience yelling "Get naked!" He didn't.). More new, then: here's "One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell" from Tuesday's gig.
Tuesday night also provided some opening act scandal; Moz didn't take kindly to KristeenYoung's banter and booted 'em from the bill. Here's what we know:
Via KristeenYoung's MySpace blog:
My band, KRISTEENYOUNG, have been asked to leave the Morrissey tour. Although I have been advised not to respond or issue a statement, my feelings are that I must. We have been asked to leave because of something I said on stage at The Hammerstein Ballroom, in New York City, this past Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the statement has been perceived as being profane (when, actually, one of the two words in question is a scientific term found in junior high, health class text books, and the other word, I feel most would agree, is lightweight slang) or defamatory. What I said was part of a thread of stage statements I made throughout our set. They were metaphorical and overstated to make an artistic point. The "offending" statement, in particular, was in no way a literal statement, and was very much in keeping with the tone of my writing in general. I reach for beauty and intelligence in my lyrics, but try to retain a bit of the everyday in them. Maybe the statement was a bit TOO everyday. Maybe I misjudged… but I meant no harm. I love Morrissey with all of my heart, soul, body, spirit, to the core of my existence and always will. These will be the only words I will ever write or speak on the subject ever again. Please don't ask for an interview or e-mail me with questions. Thanks to those who understand and who are brave enough to say so.The appropriately named Girl
Can't say we're surprised; Moz's has always been cagey about that stuff. While you envision the subsequent backstage tantrum, here's one more new tune for ya: "All You Need Is Me," live on Carson.

she said something like "morrissey gives good head..oops i mean cunnilingus"
and the replacement opener is a band called "girl in a coma"

Girl In A Coma is an up and coming back from San Antonio. They are on Joan Jett's Blackheart Records. One of the best things to come out of Texas in a long time. Definitely give them a listen. You'll thank me later.

Having been stuck suffering through her set during his tour here last summer, I will say that Moz has done a favor to all who attend his shows by kicking that screechy, talentless hag off of his tour.

The thing is, I picked up an OLD copy of Rolling Stone for $0.50 this summer and there was an interview with Moz because The Smiths were a new band just being heard in America. There was no weirdness in him acknowledging the fact that he's gay. I don't know when he got weird about it or why no one mentions this very first interview with Rolling Stone! Culture Club are on the cover!

Amb, you can talk when you've written a song as good as "Cold Steal." Thanks.

no, if you don't like an artist you're more than welcome to say so regardless of what you personally may or may not have produced. especially when you paid a lot of money for a concert and had to suffer through a terrible opening act (next time around i just got there late instead and missed her entirely).

Cold Steel is what this bitch should have been pummeled with.
How's that for my words being metaphorical and overstated to make an artistic point. The "offending" statement, in particular, is in no way a literal statement, and is very much in keeping with the tone of my writing in general.

Archivist - The reason that the Rolling Stone article said Morrissey was gay is because Morrissey didn't get along with the interviewer very well, and he basically generalized Morrissey's whole philosophy on sex into "ohhhh man this guy's sooooo gayyyy." I wouldn't say it's completely accurate. You can sense that the interviewer didn't think too highly of Moz due to the sarcastic tone in the first paragraph. Let's take a look...
"He goes by a single name, Morrissey. He calls himself a "prophet for the fourth gender," admits that he's gay but adds that he's also celibate. He's got an immense ego, and though he claims he's from a poor background, he speaks with a very upper-crust accent. He's also prone to making extravagant statements. He says, for example, that his native England is in such a deplorable state that its only hope is that someone will assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Similarly, he thinks pop music is on its last legs, and he is convinced that he and his band are the only people who can save it." (http://foreverill.com/interviews/1984/oscar.htm)
So basically Moz was always dicey about stuff like that, and the interviewer was a douche.
