New Annuals Video - "Sore" (Stereogum Premiere)

thumbnail icon: New Annuals Video - "Sore" (Stereogum Premiere)

Annuals made a strong statement for return and reinvention -- or at least, their newly learned lesson of bringing "finesse to their dynamics," as we said a few weeks ago -- with the loping symphonic folk of "Sore." It's a great tune, and the sort that deserves special video treatment. That's what it gets here, with the track's picked acoustic and latter-song swells soundtracking a Pixaresque mini-film of family love, tribal bellicosity, and exploding temples. The band tapped Teqtonik to direct, whose resumé includes work with Mogwai ("Hunted By A Freak"), the Shins, Arcade Fire ("Power Out"), so for their part they embraced the moment. Overall the animated clip packs an unexpected emotional punch, but we guess that's what makes it pair with the music so well. Besides, we love cartoons.

There's just something about the family dynamics of fantastical aboriginals that gets us every time, you know? It's good to be the king (i.e. alive). If you missed it before, don't now:

I actually don't like this at all. I'm sorry to be a downer. Remember that video game that came with the first iMacs, you were a bug or something. I'm talking, like, 1998, or something... That's what this animation looks like. But seriously, this is kinda retarded. The song sounds good, but I really don't understand why you decided to have this as the video? Was it because of the director's resume? There must be someone else. You know me. Not hating, just a little confused.

This is stupid. It makes me feel like a child watching the lion king or something. Just horrible.

That's a cute little short, the renders and overall look of it is cool, although I would like to know who was responsible for the animation? It seriously looks horrible. It reminds me of some of the worst student animation work I have seen. I can't believe actual creditable professionals animated those characters. Yikes! Well the Annuals are amazing, I think they are more deserving of a better music video.

What do you know?!! What kind of animation have you done that we can diss just for the sake of it? Get a life!

What a neat video. It's nice that they did a cool animated video rather than a boring live action video of the band standing around singing!

I love the video, I think that it goes so well with the song. Although its incredibly gory its still cute! I think that people that don't like it should be on the losing side of those spears! Boo yeah!

That was one of the coolest videos I've seen in a while, and it really did pack a punch I wasn't expecting.

I really like this one. The song seems like it needed a pixar-ish video like this. Very cool lighting and characters. Since seeing this video I have looked at some of there other work and I must say wow! Hunted by a freak is just about the best video I have ever seen, very emotional. Great storytelling guys and great track! Keep em coming!

I love this video...and I love that I just heard that Annuals is doing a special in-store acoustic performance at Schoolkids Records in Raleigh this Saturday @ 3pm in support of Record Store Day.

I'm hoping they play a lot of new stuff from the Wet Zoo EP. If you live in the area, it's definitely worth checking out...and support Schoolkids on Record Store Day!
