New Jesse Malin (Feat. Bruce Springsteen) Video - "Broken Radio"
Former D Generation dude/East Village stalwart/Bar Niagra owner Jesse Malin didn't have trouble drumming up pre-release press for his third solo LP Glitter In The Gutter; that's what happens when you enlist guys like Ryan Adams, Josh Homme, and Bruce Springsteen to sit in on the sessions. But for all the hubub and late night talk show appearances, Glitter doesn't quite shine like Malin intends. Unless the street rocker's belting it out with the Boss, of course: then, well, Springsteen's hearty harmonies polish "Broken Radio" into a full functioning transmitter (while he's singing). This is the "new version" of the song's vid, differing from the prior by including less shots of the East Village/Tompkins Square Park, and more frames of Jesse at the mic with Bruce. Fair trade.

I think The Boss sounds good here. I dont care much for the song or this Jesse guys voice. The guitar playing footage is pretty silly since it doesnt fit the music. I'm usually a fan of Danny Clinch but dont really think this is very special other than the fact that Springsteens in it.

Malin is a social climber and an opportunist. Not even Springsteen can salvage his career or songs. Nor can his Green Day record contract. His lyrics are laughable, his performances trite (including ridiculous diatribes with stolen Lenny Bruce and Woody Allen "bits"). The whole thing is a farce, his album is a Frankenstein of other musicians parts and efforts. If you think he sounds bad (like a cat drowning would be a generous assesment), it could be because he's had Ryan's c*ck in his mouth for the past few years.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Jesse, but when all is said and done, he's just not very good. He's got that rock 'n roll spirit and hangs with all the right people, but most of his songs are crap and his voice is absolutely terrible. The new album proves any inspiration that popped up occassionally on his first two albums has completely disappeared.

I think his new album is pretty damn good, albeit a little over-produced. But The Heat is incredible, probably one of my favourite albums. He might not have the top-class songwriting skills of Ryan Adams or Jakob Dylan who both appear on Glitter in the Gutter, but he still knows how to write a good song.

Hey i feel bad about the above post, there are probably a ton of Jesse Malin and D Gen fans...the guy tries hard and his album isn't horrible. And bruce is a nice look him.

Jesse's new album is certainly his weakest so far and this is a pretty poor track. But both the heat and fine art of self destruction were very good. His live shows are always fun. And the few times i've talked to him at shows he's always been cool and down to earth. I can see why his music wouldn't appeal to some people, and he's certainly not the greatest songwriter in the world, but i can't see why anyone would hate him. Or bother writing nasty things about him in a talkback section on a website.

There are some pretty great songs scattered throughout the Malin solo catalog. But overall, he does seem a tad too derivative. Even more so than Ryan Adams (who kicks major league ass nevertheless). I like Malin, but he mostly just makes me want to listen to Ryan Adams or The Replacements. I love this tune with The Boss though. Mostly because hating anything Springsteen related could, and should, land you on some sort of Homeland Security watch list.

For me, living in NYC you get beat over the head with Malin. Which means he has a great publicist and/or marketing program. I get frustrated because i feel that there are MUCH more artists that deserve half the hype this guy getsor at least half of his marketing budget . I don't hate him like some of these people, but i sure don't understand his appeal either.

I can't believe what these ppl think. Jesse's an amazing songwriter. Ok, he doesn't have the best voice in the world, but niether does spreengsteen and hes great. Jesse deserves a lot more credit from a lot more people.
This is also his best album yet. The Heat and the Fine Art of Self Destruction are also great albums, but this one is by far his best.
