Snow Police

Clearly we got a little breathless about this, so here's a Police post that won't even mention it. Been awhile since we've posted a decent mashup, and this one would be a perfect soundtrack if Gordon ever dropped by the Grey's set. It's pretty simple in form; Party Ben seamlessly straps Gary Lightbody's "Chasing Cars" vocal to an "Every Breath You Take" backtrack. Sting only gets a bridge and a chorus, but any more than that and, well, there'd be no point.

Party Ben - "Every Car You Chase" (MP3)

The Synchronicity suits the vids, too.

Party Ben did a good job - but if you want to hear the best possible mashup of this Police track, check CCC's "Breathe By Me (Police vs. Ben E. King)"

CCC = amazing

This is great - team9 could have done it better but hey, Party Ben will do just fine.

So apparently...

A song I despise + Another song I hate = A song I also hate

So there, Mrs. Brady! Two negatives don't always equal a positive!

Not the best mashup ever, but it is well done, and both songs are pretty similar ! I hadn't realized before.

aside from the missing minor key in the second phrase the music merge is brill - but i guess if the match were exact it would be the same tune in the first place.

This hobby is a bit of a mad cow disease thingy !

Well look at all the comments. A couple responses:

1) Yes, mashups are totally 2004. Actually, they're more like 2001. In any event it's all over, really, but I don't know how to do anything else.

2) Yes both songs are kind of cheesy. I guess conceptually I'd say "Every Breath You Take"'s popularity was due to a major popular misunderstanding of the song's meaning (i.e., that it was a happy love song and not a creepy stalking song), evidenced by Puff Daddy's "I'll Be Missing You." I guess my thoughts are that perhaps the straightforward cheese of "Chasing Cars" is given some depth, or at least some amusement factor, by the borderline-insanity of the Police lyrics. Alternately, it just sounds pretty.

3) Yes, CCC is very good, but I don't think this is a competition really.

4) Team9 you shut your aussie pie-hole and go back to grilling kangaroo or whatever.

5) As regards the "missing minor key" in the second phrase, you're not exactly right there. What's happening in the snow patrol song is that the A note in the A major chord in the first phrase (A-Db-E) just goes down a half step (to Ab-Db-E) making it effectively a Db minor chord. The Police song goes from A major to Gb minor; Db minor is effectively a "9th" in relation to a Gb minor, so combining the two you get a perfectly acceptable Gb minor 9th. As far as it being mad cow disease, I don't know what that means, but yes.

6) All my mashups are aimed directly at salons, and if people enjoy them while getting a wash-and-style, then my job is done.

(Just stumbled across this at random on YouTube.)

This is just... brilliant. Yes, the minor 9th in the second verse sticks out a bit, but it's not so grating. (It could've been a flat fifth or something...).

On a tangent: the old John Mayer song "Back To You" shares the inverted structure and chords with EBYT (in fact I think it's either recorded in the same key, or within a half-step). I asked JM about it when I met him a few years ago and he freely admitted to copping the riff (plus he is a big Police fan).

But I don't have the audio editing skills to put that hypothesis to the test, and certainly not so gracefully as you have here. Kudos Ben!
