White Stripes taking it back to the days of brick and mortar

While Jack & Meg have been tearing it up down at Bonnaroo, the crack White Stripes promo team has been busy putting the finishing touches on the "Icky Thump Records" store in LA:

The White Stripes are taking over the old Tower Records on Sunset Blvd. for a midnight madness sale Tuesday June 19th at 12:01AM and then a special performance on Wednesday June 20th in the store. The whole store is being decorated in the style of the old Tower, except with imagery from the band. The first 200 people to buy the record at midnight will receive tickets to the show. Fans have already begun to camp out to ensure their tickets. Check out the youtube channel for video coverage of the event.

Camping out for a midnight release at Tower Records? Takes us back to our younger days (e.g.: Pear Jam Vs.). But we'd brave it to see the Stripes in a store of their own design (here's a guess: bucket of red, bucket of white, as many pearls as will fit on a vest). The outside is looking pretty Thumped-out as well.

After the 6/20 LA story, the Stipes move to NY for a no-longer-secret show at Irving Plaza (excuse us, The Fillmore NY at Irving Plaza). Anybody going? Too bad the show couldn't have been at our own hollowed-out husk of a Tower. Been a while since we've been down that way, but we're assuming it's been transformed into some sort of luxury condo by now.

I get those nails-on-chalkboard shivers at the words "Icky Thump". Something so saccharine and cutesy about the title...like the name of some really shitty game you used to have to play at summer camp to see who had to scrub the dishes or something.

Interesting observation, KingHater. But I guess they were banking on the uniqueness of the name being credited only to them, you know, so it wouldn't ever be mistaken for being another band's album. But it's a stretch.

Anyone know the skinny on the NYC show - the site says first come first served, but on craigslist, peeps are saying they are already on a list??? Any enlightenment on this situation would be much appreciated.

Bryjax - that's what the Yeah Yeah Yeahs said, if my memory serves me correctly. Refer back to that story for further proof that "first come first serve" has a totally revamped meaning.

"Check out the youtube channel for video coverage of the event."

It's also being live streamed on AT&T Blue room.

The White Stripes will be performing an intimate show at The Fillmore @ Irving Plaza in New York City on Tuesday, June 19th. Tickets go on sale Saturday, June 16th, at 10 am EST and will only be available at The Fillmore box office. Tickets are $30 each and there is a strict 2 ticket limit per person. The box office only accepts CASH, NO REFUNDS. You will be required to show photo ID when purchasing tickets, a voucher will then be given to you to show proof of purchase. You must then bring this voucher and the same photo ID with you in order to pick up the tickets, NO EXCEPTIONS. Tickets may be picked up at the box office beginning at 8 pm on the night of the show. You must enter the venue immediately after ticket pick-up and the vouchers are NON-TRANSFERABLE. Be sure to get there early so you don't miss their friends, The Citizens Band.

Thanks,

@KingHater

Icky Thump is a English Yorkshire colloquialism, it's not just some _random_ jumble of words. It's an exclamation of surprise- "By ecky-thump!". Jack got it from his wife who lives in Yorkshire.

The fans also say that the band had pizzas, breakfast burritos and coffee sent to them throughout the day and night. Awwww.

Well, that's Warner Bros. for ya. They probably flew them via company jet from NYC, after their apperance on Conan, to LA for just a couple of hours, then back to NYC for tonight's gig. Then again, to save money, they forced them to fly economy to LA and take the red-eye back to NYC. Anyhow, it still blows me away that a blues-rock duo is playing the friggin' Garden!
