I wouldn't say it's limited to pop music. There's so much indie that's "vibey" and "chill" forgettable background music with few memorable hooks.
babystrange what are you favorite smiths songs?
Borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered 90s I guess
I guess indie rock isn't dead after all!
good to hear from you again babystrange! I share your affection for Harvey Danger and late 90s one hit wonders.
This is excellent. The drums and chords are almost Steely Dan to my ears.
Led Zeppelin and St. Vincent both rule. I hope she makes a rock album for her next big project.
Kind of weird to say they became a funk band once they replaced their white bassist with Darryl Jones though no?
Lyrics are kind of a similar vibe too, as is the vocal phrasing.
Wow that melody is a dead ringer for the verse and the horns are incredibly similar. Chorus melody is definitely different though.
I'll try Deja Vu again! I think another thing the albums could be suffering from is that they haven't been remixed/remastered like contemporaneous albums by the Beatles, Stones, and Led Zeppelin — the production increases the frozen in amber effect for me.
Agreed. Their harmonies are pretty but it's pretty much all about "Helplessly Hoping" and "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" for me. Beyond that, it's really corny (and even those are kind of corny) other than Neil Young's "Ohio" which completely rips.
Don’t know how Sticky Fingers, Exile, Some Girls, and Tattoo You are evidence of some kind of decline post 60s.
I know CSN have experienced a major revival in interest over the past decade but I’m not sure I fully get it. Relistened to the debut and the non-folky moments (kitschy Marrakech Express or moments when Stills tries to be a soul man/rocker) really didn’t land for me. Nothing but love and respect for Neil Young though. On another note, I’m really not sure what’s supposedly wrong with having rich college women in your fan base?
I've listened to the Stones so much that I had to dive into the Faces recently to mix it up and gotta say...rock and roll folks! It's good stuff! Excited to hear this — seems like the most interesting of their reissues. The Exile one was pretty botched with 2010s era re-recordings.
Emotional Rescue is such a cool record. It doesn't really swing for greatness, so you can just enjoy the band banging out some great disco/new wave/rockabilly fusion grooves.
Agreed. Last Kanye project I really liked was Kids See Ghosts. Last solo Kanye project I really liked was Yeezus. This feels like it's picking up where that left off.
I'm not one to defend Kanye's political shift but one of his earliest singles was "Jesus Walks" and the Black church played a huge role in all kinds of freedom struggles, so I think you're a little off base there.
I feel weird about him and how he's using this to rehab his image, but this is a really good song. Feels like the album he should have made after Pablo.
The hams is the powers that be
The fact that MGMT are fans (and she digs them too) makes me like both bands even more.
Dylan's whole latter day career (and much of his early stuff too) is playing with other people's work or as the man himself called it "love and theft". There's a new story about it every time he has a new project out but it's been a big part of his career forever (and part of what makes him interesting IMO).
Like others have already mentioned, I've been diving into more of his discography since Murder Most Foul but I still feel like I haven't scraped the surface. More than anything else, I just feel lucky to be alive at the same time there's a great new Bob Dylan album coming out.
Renaming "urban contemporary" as "progressive R&B" is about as wack since it implies "normal" R&B isn't "progressive" when much of it clearly is, no?
The kids are alright. I think it's notable things are bad in the George Floyd case that even Trump and his media allies aren't defending the officer in question.
Been doing a deep dive into Dylan's discography beyond the obvious stuff. Desire and John Wesley Harding are well worth your time if you haven't heard them. Also Leonard Cohen's I'm Your Man album which feels more relevant than ever. Khruangbin are excellent.
I've mostly just listened to singles compilations ("Cherry Bomb" is killer as I'm sure you know). Anything good been on your radar recently?
Also babystrange am I correct in remembering that you or your family are from/live in Minneapolis? Hope you and yours are doing alright either way.
Yeah it's a killer song. I've really gone on to appreciate Joan Jett and the Runaways stuff as I've gotten older. It's some of my favorite rock and roll tbh.
Tom you may appreciate this but when I saw Snoop Dogg in Charlottesville while I was a UVA student he inexplicably and amazingly broke up his set with a big "Does anybody here love rock and roll?" and started to singing and dancing along to this song. My favorite memory associated with this song by far.
Definitely! What have you been listening to recently?
Yeah I dabble a bit here and there but since I stopped being an active user, I haven't really looked back either. My mental health has been exponentially better.
Definitely a 10. Strongly prefer synthy and groovy Queen over bombastic operatic Queen. This, "I Want to Break Free," "Radio Gaga," and "Another One Bites the Dust" are my favorite singles of theirs. This is their best by a mile though in my opinion.
Completely agree. Nothing surpassed the singles here and it was such a slog it felt like work getting through it all that even the album tracks didn't jump out like on the last record.
I kind of agree with a lot of this. I really wanted to like the album but none of the unreleased songs hold a candle to the singles, and even then I don't think the singles on a whole I don't think are as good the last two records. A lot of the filler is borderline unlistenable to my ears, but I think there's probably a great 10 song album buried in there. I'm so burnt out after listening to it that I don't know if I could compile one right now.
Exactly the tweet I was thinking of! So many stories about "what you need right now" or "this speaks exactly to this moment" paired with a lot of yas queen girlboss stuff. It just feels played out at this point.
