Besides, there seems to be another videoclip in the works, and I expect it to star French actress Emma de Caunes. It's only a guess, but then again, what else would you make of that tweet sent earlier this week... https://twitter.com/Emma_de_Caunes/status/821311026968854528
I thought it was weird to have them do all that teasing with the characters' narrative, and then throw us a single that doesn't feature any of them... Turns out, according to the AV Club (http://www.avclub.com/article/gorillaz-return-their-first-new-song-6-years-halle-248692), this song is NOT the first single from the album. Makes a lot more sense. Must be a special thing for that special president's inaugurination. The song itself if good, I'm sure it will come up at the perfect moment on the album (the pacing will be great, as usual). Great performance by M. Clementine.
Come on, I didn't think the song was THAT bad... Even if it turns out to be one of the weakest ones on his new album, I've heard way worst filler than that...
Well I'm not setting my hope too high here, but I wouldn't be that surprised if we had a single by the end of this week... Their Twitter account has been kind of "celebrating their past" -- The "Gorillaz" album yesterday, "Demon Days" today... That could mean "Plastic Island" tomorrow and "New Album" (single!) on Friday... Just sayin'...
Reading reviews like this one, I get the very scary feeling nobody would give a crap about this album if it didn't have M83's name on it. I've been a big fan since Dead Cities etc. but now I'm not sure I want to hear this new one.
Zooropa??? I'll believe it when I hear it... As far as I'm concerned, Zooropa is U2's last good album, only surpassed by Achtung Baby...
If the new Neon Indian isn't worthy of this list, then your "system" is broken.
Lots of great songs to choose from. My personnal favorite is probably Lo Boob Oscillator, but Cybele's Reverie is also up there. Also, in no particular order: The Emergency Kisses Rainbo Conversation Margerine Melodie Fluorescences The Free Design "Get a Shot of the Refrigerator" But really I could go on and on...
I love the new song. The sound is dirty like some of that Blur/13 stuff, but a little more streamlined. It's all that "The Puritan" was not ("Under the Westway" was excellent, tho). I wouldn't be suprised if this new album meant that we'll have to wait until 2016 for the next Gorillaz. All we've been told so far is that Gorillaz "is coming back", that's not very precise. And I mean, Albarn had his solo album last year... How much work can the guy put up in so few months?
I'm not sure how you can say that "there’s no confirmation they’re releasing a new (album) in 2014" when their website -- http://www.spoontheband.com/ -- welcomes visitors with a glorious NEW ALBUM SUMMER 2014...
And Mr. Albarn is totally worthy of being in that category, of course. He's the greatest.
It's a very interesting question, and I've been thinking about who else might be included in that top 5. As of now, the only other name I could think of (for now at least) is Kanye, even though I'm not that big a fan of him. In terms of influence, innovation and productivity, I think he's pretty up there. Another one that could be worthy but is maybe also a little too "young" would be Jack White? Maybe Kieran Hebden?
This is great! I'm so glad that this is not as "dancy" as Pink was... Pink was interesting but it's the one Four Tet album I never revisit, basically. This is the more logical next step after There Is Love In You. Still, it's obvious on Beautiful Rewind that the Pink singles series played a role in the overall evolution of Four Tet. What an interesting guy to follow.
Thanks for putting this up on Soundcloud instead of that still-not-available-in-Canada Spotify.
Am I the only one hearing some kind of Röyksopp influence in Giorgo By Moroder? Really good song anyway. Definitly an early highlight for this album.
I'm halfway through it and it's not at all what I expected, although I understand now why Get Lucky was chosen as first single. It's all very soft and loungy. «Touch» is a very bizarre animal.
Yeah, you pretty much butchered this. "À tout à l'heure" translates to "see you soon" or "see you later" and is not ambiguous at all on the whole "past/future" thing, as cool as it may sound. Pitchfork also got that wrong. It's probably because of "tout à l'heure", which could refer to a moment just passed or a moment about to occur. But that initial "À" makes all the difference. Sorry about this.
Of course I know these songs, but it would've been nice to be able to listen to them while reading this. But that's not possible, because the stupid folks at Spotify don't give a damn about Canada. I understand that you use Spotify -- I would if I could -- but for now, I still prefer those good ol' YouTube thingies...
I absolutely agree! And the mixing with the strings makes it sound compressed, which is really a shame because it's a very nice song.
As a complete sucker for anything Depeche Mode does, I have to admire the effort here. I probably could not list their 10 best songs and not feel guilty for excluding this or that. We probably all agree on Enjoy the Silence, but I'm far less certain about People are People and Just Can't Get Enough, which seem a bit like obvious commercial choices. Personally, I would have replaced Can't Get Enough with New Life, from the same album. And, just to add a nerdy touch to this, I would definitly put in my Top 10 the Violator era B-Side Sea of Sin. The simple fact that such a song ended up being a B-Sides really goes to show how DM were on such a hot creative streak with the trilogy Music For The Masses/Violator/Songs of Faith and Devotion.
For whatever reason, I had not heard about this project. Turns out it's pretty interesting! This Memori single is very good, and I'm also loving August's "Phares" single. Thanks Stereogum!
I realize some people are not going to like what I'm about to say, but "Yet Again" just doesn't do it for me. Not because it's not a good song or because it sounds bad. It's just that the first minute sounds SO MUCH like Coldplay it's a complete turnoff. Well, to me, at least. Go ahead, just listen to it with your eyes closed. The chords, the way it's sung: it's really a Coldplay song. I really enjoy those "top songs" features on Stereogum, by the way. Keep 'em coming!
Yep, great song! First time that I actually "love" a Matthew Dear song. I "liked" his previous stuff, like, I thought the guy deserved respect and all, but this single has been on repeat on my ipod for a few weeks now, and I'm not growing tired of it at all.
Well according to the album liner notes, it's a saxophone. And it makes sense, because that doesn't sound like a tuba.
I don't know why. It's an utterly fantastic album. Maybe one day people will understand.
#1 : Metronomy, and by far, with The English Riviera Also: GusGus, Junior Boys, Cut Copy, PJ Harvey
I don't care who's missing on that list or who's been active before 2010. I come here to hear about new music, and all of this is new music. So many thanks Stereogum for the heads up: I'm really enjoying this mixtape!
Wow! NOW I'm excited about this album!
It's funny that you should ask this... I was a huge U2 fan in the '90s. I don't care much for their music since the "Beautiul Day" single, but I'm still vaguely interested in all U2-related news. Just some strange curiosity, almost always followed by disappointment, and then by a feeling of shame of having thought that I actually might have not been disappointed. I bought their last album and listen to it for maybe a week; it didn't seem so bad to me. New music to feed nostalgia, I guess. So, yes, I'm actually interested in U2 posts on Stereogum. But I don't really know why.
There's definitly some kind of Pulp influence in there.
Never a dull moment with Mr. Albarn. This will indeed be the soundtrack my summer's soundtrack, and in fact it's already my spring's.
