No, that's not quite right. Blue Thunder is a stone cold classic. Smells Like Teen Spirit was the lowest common denominator song in Nirvana's catalog. As James pointed out in his write-up, it was always a blantant Pixies homage and wasn't the definitive Nirvana song. It was just their biggest hit. It was also the song that turned them into the AC/DC of my high school and drove me farther down the ratholes of alternative music when I was a teenager. If I could thank Kurt Cobain for anything today, it would be for that.

I'm not usually one to argue with leaving off "obvious" choices, because I think that these lists should be subjective to the authors personal whims; however, Blue Thunder is one of the greatest college rock songs of that era and I assumed that was widely known. So leaving it off of the top ten list of a band that only recorded 3 albums seems wrong in all kinds of ways.

So this festival is pretty new and gets no love from Pitchfork or Stereogum, but Boston Calling actually has one of the most unique lineups this year. Death Cab, The Decemberists, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, Tegan and Sara, Jenny Lewis... That's a bucking the trend lineup right there.

Adrien, I agree with your assessment of the first seven albums as all individually flawed in their own ways, but in my opinion, Seventh Son has the worst song on any of those albums. Can I Play With Madness is absolutely embarrasing to listen to. I contend that Somewhere in Time is the most consistently good of their first seven.

Oh man, I've been thinking a lot lately that you should start doing some metal in these lists and that Iron Maiden was a great place to start. Metal was the first type of music that I ever fell i love with, and it kicked off my lifelong passion. The first Maiden album that I heard was Somewhere in Time, so naturally it is my favorite, but I can't really argue with your top 5. Brave New World could be a lot higher though...I think that's the best of their later albums and rates pretty well alongside their early stuff. So since you've been reading my mind lately, I can only assume that lists by Priest, Slayer and Mercyful Fate/King Diamond will soon be following...

What is the purpose of this list exactly? You've never done a top 100 songs of an artist before, and you start with Drake?!? Drake might have 100 songs to his credit, but he doesn't have 100 good songs. Like every hip-hop artist, his albums are all too long and are full of filler. So this list was bound to be a list of 10 or 20 good songs and then an arbitrary list of everything else in his catalog. Why would you do that?

Denis Leary wasn't a gang leader, he was a bank robber or something like that. And I saw the movie recently, it really wasn't that bad. It's worth watching if you have nothing better to do. It's got Stephen Dorff and Jeremy Piven in it too. And you're right, Fallin' is the best song on the album.

I bought this album on itunes, like 5 years ago, on the recommendation of an article that I don't remember and basically never listened to it. I knew almost nothing about this band before reading this. I've been listening to it since starting this article, and already I can feel something brewing between us. It kind of feels like the time I discovered the first two Belle and Sebastian albums in a bin and realized this was something not many other people knew about. In other words, I don't think this has happened to me since the days of actual music stores outside of metro areas. What a great article. 'Gum has long surpassed Pitchfork as the place to come for serious music fans, and the Bracy's have become their secret weapon. Thanks for introducing me to this!

Wait...people are complaining because it sounds too much like a Pixies song? Screw that, I think that this song is fuckin' great! Plus, it's got the line "you put the cock in cocktail"!! If Paul and Tommy record something that sounds even remotely like a Replacements song, then I will be a very happy music geek.

The Band are one of my all-ttime favorites, and Levon was a particular hero of mine. If anyone's interested in the controversial back story behind the Band, you should read Levons book This Wheel's On Fire. It's a classic. Love this list, and love the article. Stereogum, Timothy and Elizabeth should write every one of these lists for you. Nicely done.
