Yessir! That run from The Yes Album to Relayer is unmatched. I personally believe it to be the best 5 album run by any band. Ever.

(You could almost make the case that Going For The One made it six in a row but for me the wanky production takes it down a notch.)

I love Rush! So as a fellow die-hard fan of that band please, please, please do yourself a favor and take the plunge into the mighty Yes’ catalog.

Start with Close To The Edge and Fragile. If you’re still on board, move to Relayer and Tales From Topographic Oceans.

1) Both Rush and Yes get style points for virtuosity.
2) Rush is probably more consistently great.
3) When Yes was on top of their game (i.e.-1971-1974) no one has ever come close to their level.

Yes is the reason I started taking music seriously. I would never have been able to appreciate bands like XTC, Radiohead or Pixies without first understanding that Rock music could be anything you wanted it to be. Thank you, Stereogum for giving this incredible band their due.

Here’s how I rank their best work:

1. Tales From Topographic Oceans
2. Fragile
3. Close To The Edge
4. Relayer
5. The Yes Album
6. Going For The One
7. Drama
8. 90125
9. The Ladder
10. Magnification

They will always be my favorite band.

NIN hasn’t done a good record in two decades. Biffy Clyro put out one this year. Much better band in 2013. Sorry, Trent. You’re a bum.

April 24, 2013 on Premature Evaluation: Deerhunter Monomania

Monomania is a dud. Noisy, uninspired and almost unlistenable at times. Such a disappointment coming on the heels of Halcyon Digest, Spooky Action and Parallax. Maybe it will grow on me.

That being said, The Missing is pretty great.

His best album. By far.

April 15, 2013 on Album Of The Week: Kurt Vile Wakin On A Pretty Daze

Do The Collapse is way better than people think. Earthquake Glue needs to be higher as well. Other than that, this list is pretty good. I think it’s safe to say that Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes are two of the best albums ever recorded and deserve the top spots.
