Much of this record sounds to me like your average middle-aged wedding band playing lite disco and funk for the grown ups. Go back and listen to “Homework” for comparison. They tackled disco/funk then too, but with far better results.
I think a lot of the hype and positive reviews around this are reflective of people who are happy to receive something — anything — after waiting and waiting for new material. Daft Punk clearly wants to be taken more seriously as musicians — not just DJs pressing play atop a pyramid. Which is fine, but they could have done something that pushed the ball forward, not backward.
Sigh. Agreed on the ‘over signing’ comment. Everything sounds forced and uncomfortable.
Appears 4AD believes there’s hidden commercial potential there for Grimes and this track in particular and are attempting to give her a more defined visual style. Nothing wrong with that, but this video doesn’t help. Sometimes having no concept can feel like a concept, but in this case it feels rather thrown together.
Yeesh. This sounds rather uninspired.
If this is an outtake I’d love to hear what else ended up on Maus’ editing room floor. Can see why it wasn’t included — bit too uptempo and a bit out of sync with everything else. Nice track nonetheless. Very much looking forward to new Maus material.
