I now have considerably less incentive for visiting Stereogum. All the best at Pitchfork, it seems you’ll have the freedom to do what you want on a much bigger stage. Thanks for all the music, interviews and so forth. Great way to end it.

“ex-Twilight”? Did I miss news about that band?

Completely unrelated to this: I watched Such Hawks, Such Hounds with a couple buddies last night and was pleasantly surprised to have seen you in it for 10 seconds. Very cool.

Profound Lore is just killing it these days.

It’s nowhere near as good as Dear Science, but I dig this record. Took a couple times thru, but it stuck. “Repetition” is great.

Big fan of those opening drum hits.

I picked this record up today and it’s great start to finish. As much as I love long, drawn out songs that have to build, sometimes I just want a band to streamline what they do and put out a 35-40 minute record. The fuzziness of the guitar and bass are exquisite.

“an American black metal band going for an orthodox sound with no “post”’s attached.” Thumbs up to that. I’m liking this. I’m starting to feel as if the whole American “post-black metal” scene has peaked (I’m pretty underwhelmed by the debut from DeafHeaven which I was really looking forward to). These guys have studied their Watain/Darkthrone and that’s not a bad thing.

Anything with Tunde crooning. I’m not expecting better than Dear Science, but I’m excited none the less.

Second. Holy Mountain would fit in perfect, let alone Dopesmoker.

That’s one of the easiest/quickest first listens I’ve ever had to a Krallice track. Incredible, really looking forward to this record.

Saw these guys in Pittsburgh last September. They blew out an amp 2 songs in and it was really awkward. The lead singer is a sad sack, but man can they play. Top 2 Loudest shows I’ve ever been to.

Past Lives put out a great debut last February. Everyone forgot about it.

That Past Lives record was great and unfortunately I think it’ll be forgotten on most lists.

December 8, 2010 on Stereogum’s Top 50 Albums Of 2010

Saw this tour in Pittsburgh in early November. Good night, good bands, but I was a little “meh” on Watain overall. Black Anvil & Goatwhore (both bands I’d never listened to before that night) killed Watain in terms of stage presence and performance. Not that Watain wasn’t good, they just got old very quickly. Their set felt too static to me, too by the books. I’m not a huge fan of the seriousness with which Daniellson approaches live performance: I want a little levity with my satanism (I like the music, couldn’t care less about the ideology surrounding it). His performance felt like he was reading from a script, whereas the guy from Goatwhore was genuinely engaging/funny/entertaining/personable/etc. Ultimately, I’m glad I went to the show and I was amazed at the number of people in attendance (Pittsburgh isn’t exactly a hotbed for live shows, especially metal) which hopefully means more bands of this ilk will make it to my city.

Twilight, Altar of Plagues, Culted (did that record come out this year or last?), & Mose Giganticus deserves an honorable mention.

Brandon: You’re quickly becoming my go-to-guy for new music. This is very good, I’m intrigued. It’s weird and kind of has things I normally hate (the synthy stuff, the SNES sounding keyboard hits) but it works with this.
