She's not been wronged here though. Nothing bad could possibly come from this for her. Her career's obviously got enough momentum now that some third-rate pop band that nobody knows outside of the UK (I sure as hell hadn't heard of them until this) decided to do a karaoke rendition of one of her songs isn't going wash everything down the drain. If this is a matter of "a violation of artistic integrity" then perhaps she shouldn't have released most of the songs on her album before the album was actually released. At any rate, I just think the outrage is silly and that this is nothing to get bent out of shape about. She'll be fine.
Whatever. She's not being ripped off in any way. She'll get her royalties, she's credited in the liner notes of the albums, she really has no reason to be upset. This is a really ridiculous temper tantrum.
This is just stupid. People cover other artists songs all the time. Banks has covered all sorts of people; I doubt she called up The Weeknd personally when she did "What You Need", or got in contact with Aaliyah's estate when she did "Are You That Somebody". Take a chill pill girl, you don't really want to adopt Don Henley's "you darn kids get off my property" mindset do you?
Does anybody else remember Native Korean Rock? The little one-off solo project Karen O did a year or so after Show Your Bones was released? It basically only existed in the form of a poorly-maintained MySpace page that featured six or so songs, but this was definitely one of them. I wonder if the rest of those songs have made it onto Crush Songs. They had names like "OOO" and "Beast" and I think she also did a cover of The Doors' "Indian Summer".
Yeah FMMF has been a hot mess from the beginning. It doesn't help that Columbus doesn't really have a good venue for a festival (which I guess is why it's set up SXSW style, at multiple venues). Furthermore, R. Kelly--in addition to being a highly controversial figure--doesn't really fit in well with the rest of this line-up.
That's nice. I see in your attempt to either run to Lykke Li's defense or make a statement against Lorde, or perhaps both (I'm not sure where your mindset is) you've totally missed my point, which was just that they've both made albums as teenagers that sound like they were written by teenagers (because they were). Radiohead also falls into this category ("Pablo Honey" is their "Youth Novels"/"Pure Heroine", but I digress). At no point did I try to convince anyone that Lorde is more talented than Lykke Li (and I wouldn't, that would be ignorant; they're two totally different artists at very different stages int heir respective careers, from different generations, with distinctly different aesthetics), so I'm not exactly sure from where you gleaned that, or why you felt it so necessary to imply that what I was getting at was "Lorde > Lykke Li". So, just throwing that out there.
While I really like "Youth Novels", and have ever since it came out, I can totally understand why she as an artist finds it cringey now. It does sound like an album written by a teenager, albeit a very talented teenager, and her sound has changed an awful lot. I kind of expect to hear this same thing from Lorde, two more albums from now, about how she can't stand Pure Heroine anymore.
Is it okay to be bummed out by artists "going pop" yet?
Yeah I'm not exactly getting all of the "Foster The People is the most boring band ever" stuff that goes on at this site all the time. Sure, they're not earth-shatteringly profound but Maroon 5 has been around for like ten years now and nobody's more fucking boring than them.
Best news I've heard in a good while. I'm awfully excited for this.
Let's not forget the most important bit of information here: both of these bands are fucking terrible.
Not all that surprising when you considering that you know... they're divorced. How many people actually speak to their ex-spouses when there aren't any kids in the mix? I feel like it can't be many.
Is it so far-fetched to assume that Jay-Z's probably kind of a douchebag and Solange had just had enough of his shit?
It's so pop that it's like parody of pop, but it's somehow even more pop than that. More pop than pop. It's really fucking creepy to me, and I like that a lot.
All of those singles got a lot of love from alternative radio though. I'd argue that "Helena Beat" and "Houdini" were "hits" in their own right, in spite of the fact that they didn't make the Billboard Hot 100.
It's really impressive that her voice sounds exactly the same as it did 20 years ago.
Not bad. I do like that bit at the end where she says "Thank you MTV for letting me, of all people, go unplugged." Very self-aware Miley.
Sounds kinda phoned-in. Are these guys still writing their own material?
I can dig it. This jingle's better than about half the songs on Heartthrob.
Love her. Saw her for the first time in the basement of a church in Athens, OH back in like '08 or '09. More recently I saw her at Little Rock here in Columbus about a month ago, and she's only improved with age.
I refuse to believe that "Somebody Told Me" and "Mr. Brightside" are the two best Killers songs. Don't get me wrong, they're fine, but I they're just catchy singles; they're not more compelling or well-thought-out than "Read My Mind" or "Andy You're a Star" or plenty of the other songs on this list. Always ranking the hit singles as #1 on these list is kind of condescending too, I might add.
This is wonderful. I want Stevie Nicks to officiate my wedding.
Man most of these bands weren't even together that long.
BREAKING NEWS: Noel Gallagher whines about something, still hates Liam. Claims Oasis with never reunite.
Definitely one of the project I'm highly anticipating for next year. Very excited.
I love that everybody's treating this like it's new. Great remix nonetheless.
I'm so excited that my town's finally getting some recognition. There's tons of talent in Columbus and it's always seemed so underrated to me.
I always thought "All My Stars Aligned" was the high point of her first record, but maybe that's just me. Otherwise I have very little to argue against with this list.
os-ten-si-bly: apparently or purportedly, but perhaps not actually. "portrayed as a blue-collar type, ostensibly a carpenter" synonyms: apparently, seemingly, on the face of it, to all intents and purposes, outwardly, superficially, allegedly, supposedly, purportedly Eat a dick.
"Tegan & Sara's very good album (though ostensibly far worse than their previous albums) Heartthrob, is out now on Warner Bros."
I can honestly say this is almost exactly how I feel about the Coldplay discography. I would say, myself, that I like "Parachutes" more than I like "A Rush of Blood to the Head" but that's a minor qualm. Way to go guys.
I know I'm in the minority, but I fucking hate Trent Reznor. He's an overrated, overexposed whiny little bitch and a hack songwriter. I'm ready for him to just go back to scoring movies and making albums with his wife.
*telenovela (despite what autocorrect says)
A 30 minute novella on how much Lana Del Rey hates Lady Gaga.
Finally, a celebrity feud I can really get invested in!
Foals, Palma Violets, Kate Nash, Youth Lagoon, How to Destroy Angels, Unknown Mortal Orchestra: this list could use more of these. I still maintain that only half of "Heartthrob" is even remotely listenable.
