Here's all of the metal BNM's for the last decade. Maybe not 8.4, but maybe 8.6? Tho Sleep will rank higher in the year end list. This is based on their tag of Metal. Sleep - 8.4 Power Trip - 8.4 Baroness - 8.5 Deafheaven - 9.0 Pallbearer - 8.6 Deafheaven - 8.9 Converge - 8.6 Baroness - 8.5 Pallbearer - 8.4 Trash Talk - 8.2 Wolves in the Throne Room - 8.6 Fucked Up - 8.6 OFF! - 8.5 Kylesa - 8.4 (no BNM, but did end up on year end list) Sunn O)))) - 8.5 Isis - 8.5 Fucked Up - 8.8 Harvey Milk - 8.6
I doubt it. They didn't even write a review for "Canary Yellow" last month. 8.4 land.
Yeah this was the point I was trying to make, but didn't clearly state.
Also, for reference. This time last year (July 3rd) we had two 9+ albums - Kendrick and Mount Eerie 2016: Three - Radiohead, Chance, Kanye 2015: Three - Kendrick, Sufjan, Jamie xx 2014: Two - Swans, Sun Kil Moon 2013: Four - MBV, Kanye, VW, Disclosure 2012: Two - Fiona, Beach House 2011: Two - Bon Iver, James Blake 2010: Four - Beach House, Joanna Newsom, LCD, Ariel Pink
Fog Lake's Captain is out this week too, and I have a feeling that'll be my AOTW. His last one was really good and these singles have been solid - Gum even highlighted "Captain" on a Five Songs of the Week feature.
Since you took the time to break all of this down, I'll respond in kind. Of those, I'd say Beach House and Cardi B have the best chance. But it's kind of surprising they haven't given a 9 to anything yet. Also, despite getting a 7.7, I can totally see Dirty Computer landing on their year end list just like ANTI- did (same score). Potential 9's on the horizon: Deerhunter - cassette only got a 7.2, but their write up of Primavera gave praise to the new material. DH has the longest running BNM streak so far too. Anderson .Paak - Both singles have gotten BNTs. No album announced yet, but they loved Malibu (as everyone should), and the anticipation for this one is larger. Mitski - Two BNTs, and she's changing it up quite a bit this round with great results. Spiritualized - This one's a maybe. The first singles were good, but they didn't quite illicit the response "Hey Jane" did from many places. Still, it's a Spiritualized record, and likely the last one. Deafheaven - I don't think this will. I'm not a fan of the band, but I was surprised to see their last one get a 9, then rank outside the top 20 on their list. FKA Twigs - No announcement yet, but they adored LP1, and her EPs. I don't think their fondness of her has waned at all. Vampire Weekend - AOTY 2013 for them, I could see this getting a high score, but we won't know till the first single. 5 years is a long time, but they're a bigger band now. I dunno of much else that's being hinted at or built up right now. There's obviously the possibility of new Frank Ocean (unlikely), and Grimes keeps flip flopping. If MBV releases their EPs, I don't think they'll land in the mid-8s. Earl Sweatshirts a possibility I suppose, but I feel like there's less of a chance to see new material from him b/c of his recent cancellations b/c of his father's passing. AAL's release does make me curious for more Nicolas Jaar tho. With no major rap releases being teased - I don't see a new Kendrick coming out this year - this might be the year a rock album takes AOTY. Doubtful tho.
I dig this. Sounds a bit like Dinosaur Jr.
No. 1 bucket list band and I'm seeing them finally in St. Paul next month. Definitely wearing ear plugs. Still on the fence about a diaper.
I've listened to it twice so far, and its incredibly lush, soulful, and weird at times. I enjoyed *blisters* but I think this tops it.
Album is fantastic.
Really looking forward to serpentwithfeet, Flasher, Snail Mail, but especially Jorja Smith. Her singles so far have been great. Also, that Tancred album came out last week and is streaming.
I've always been partial to Way Out. Good band.
Good choice. Just finished my first listen and it's wonderful. I really enjoyed the new FJM too, but was a bit underwhelmed by the new Natalie Prass. Not done with it, but not very impressed.
Yeah the original rip floating around was shit. I should have waited b/c I didn't like the album initially.
sweet. looking forward to this one.
I've enjoyed most of the Beach House catalog, but this one has not caught on for me yet. The singles were good, but I don't think this compares to Bloom or Teen Dream. Need more time with it though.
1. Ga x5 2. They Want My Soul 3. Kill the Moonlight 4. Gimme Fiction 5. A Series of Sneaks 6. Transference 7. Girls Can Tell 8. Hot Thoughts 9. Telephono
Shoot. Can't believe I forgot about Telephono. I guess it just doesn't stand out that much to me. It's kind of a mixed affair like you said. I did like "Nefarious" quite a bit.
Definitely underrated. Some of my favorite Spoon songs are on here: Reservations Car Radio Execution The Minor Tough Staring at the Board Not my favorite Spoon record, but a strong debut.
As a big fan of this band I'd suggest starting from the beginning and seeing the progress. I think it's necessary to see how they went from the brisk punk of New Brigade, to almost hardcore on You're Nothing, then left turned to create one of the best modern post-punk albums in Plowing Into the Field of Love, and now with their most accessible (banger after banger) album in Beyondless. I think Plowing is still their best, but this one is fantastic as well. I'd rank them this way (but they're all great) Plowing Into the Field of Love Beyondless New Brigade You're Nothing
Rainwater Cassette Exchange was more an EP than a cassette, and that's online. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this didn't end up getting ripped and circulated. But streaming services, unlikely.
I've been insinuating that this is how they go about their reviews for awhile now. Too many inconsistencies over the years.
2 BNT's too, and they listed Make Me Feel in their top 3 tracks of the year so far. I feel like they did this on purpose, just to downplay the impact. It'll still crack their top 50 albums of the year just like Rihanna's ANTI did, and they gave it the same score. Fuckin white people.
Plowing is undeniably their masterpiece, and with that regard Beyondless is def a step downish, but I feel it's still a competent effort and one of my favorites of the year so far. I still feel there's a lot of stuff going on that makes it a worthwhile entry into their catalog.
Every time I see your profile pic, it makes me happy. But WTF is up with that other sites review? 7.7? Atrocious.
When New Brigade came out, I became an Iceage fan, but You're Nothing never really struck a nerve with me. It's ok. But Plowing into the Field of Love is one of the best post-punk records of the decade. I get the "Americana" reference, but it's more indebted to post-punk. It remains their best record imo. Beyondless though, is excellent. It takes all of the great aspects of their previous work and smashes it together. It's a little bit punky, it's a little bit vaudevillian, it's a little bit of everything. Enjoyed this tremendously. If you didn't like an Iceage able before, you may like this one.
Good write up, but I wasn't that impressed with Twerp Verse. I do love their first two records quite a bit so maybe it just needs more time.
Really hope Dirty Computer gets a PE. Grouper, Forth Wanderers, and Half Waif were all great. Speedy Ortiz was kinda meh.
Guess I'm going to St. Paul!
I'm kind of surprised they've ignored Twin Fantasy, thought for sure that'd get a PE given how much his stock has raised, and the fact that it's getting pretty big praise from all outlets.
Speaking of Premature Evaluations, they seem to be scarce this year. Only 2 so far. Were Justin TImberlake and Jack White really the most anticipated albums of 2018 so far?
Solid week of releases - this was good, as was Half Waif's Lavendar. Listening to Grouper now, but I'm pretty certain it's all Janelle this week for me.
I didn't mind the opening track, it made Disillusioned sound better than when I first heard it. The rest is mostly garbage.
Deerhunter is one of my favorite bands of the 21st century, and they haven't made a misfire yet. Maybe some albums are less accessible to the masses (Weird Era) or too accessible (Fading Frontier) or just a left turn you wouldn't expect (Monomania) but all of them are rich in content. I was sure that FF would be their last album, as it had a feeling of finality to it, but I'm overjoyed they are still going and - based on the news and Sunday playlists - this will be another classic from them.
All of the APC singles thus far have been garbage, which is not surprising, but still disappointing. But considering Maynard hasn't released a good album since 2003, I should have expected this. I'm all about Ganser this week, ever since SG rec'd them back in 2016 with "Audrey." Singles have been solid so far. Could not get into the DRINKS album, but I'll give it another shot.
Toughest week in a long time. Both have AOTY written all over them, and my anticipation for both is feverishly high. Can't wait.
Probably not a highly anticipated record for most, but the new A Place to Bury Strangers album is a step up from their last one. It's less noisy, more post-punky/90s JAMC, which is a welcome turn for them. It's surprisingly good.
