“Spiritual successor of sorts to 1990’s Fakebook” These are the things that dreams are made of. Thanks 2015.

Beck is a monumental artist. In the years after punk broke, his hit, Loser, rose from obscurity to signify a large subset of generation X. He’s made numerous classics covering a wide range on both the emotional and genre spectrum. The albums Sea Change, Midnight Vultures, and Odelay all come to mind. While good, Morning Phase is not one of these albums. On the other hand, let’s look at Beyonce’s self-titled album. It’s without doubt that Beyonce is one of the biggest stars on the globe. It’s also without doubt that this album is her defining statement as an artist (just look at the title). She released it in a way that has never been done before with a musician on her scale. It’s even become a standard practice to use the term “pull a Beyonce” to describe upcoming album releases. As for the music itself, it’s challenging. It’s open and personal. It’s joyous & uplifting. In my opinion, it is THE pop album of this decade (so far). So, yes, Ye is right.

I borrowed a Pono for a test drive a few weeks ago. After listening to Joni Mitchell’s ‘California’, I was amazed at the range of sounds that I heard. I could actually hear Joni’s fingers tapping on her guitar as she strummed each note! Incredible, right? After coming down from the Pono high, I went back to my standard iphone/ten-dollar-buds/Spotify combo. I cranked up ‘California’ again and could hear the exact same thing.

Including Yeezus, that’s seven mostly-great, wildly-different albums in a mere decade.
