The only one I really don't like is the #1 song... The Snail Mail one is fantastic and I really do enjoy the Calvin Harris/Dua Lipa collab... Ariana Grande's is also surprisingly good and I can tolerate Sophie/Charli XCX/Ella Mai/Anderson Paak...

Well she always had killer singles... "Eliza" and "Suddenly" on 2013's One Breath and "Desire", "Suzanne & I" & "Blackout" on her s/t. I have a feeling this is going to be even more direct throughout though!
I'm in love with both genres... I admit that I wasn't into r&b in the 90s but the current generation is amazing... And then there are acts that are blending both genres like The XX and Tame Impala...
Anna Calvi deserved a place here!
Garbage fan as well! Version 2.0 was one of the first albums I've ever bought... I didn't afford to have CDs and didn't even have a CD Player so I bought it on cassette tape :)
More than The Strpkes, Chvrches are reminding me of Garbage's career arc... came out fully formed with an amazing debut, solid follow up album which is shinier and slicker but over all the sound is too similar to debut yet still proved successful... third album goes full on pop and while Beautiful Garbage had its moments it basically killed the momentum and everything since has felt loke diminishing returns!
do not forget that Hatchie EP... it is out next Friday as well :)
agreed... it's so terrible!! And I LOVED Chvrches... maybe not as much as you do but BOWYB is one of my favourite albums from 2013 and I spent a lot of time listening to that album way beyond that year... EOE had its moments... Side B of that album didn't stand out but it was good... sadly this album follows what I didn't like about EOE in that it sounds way too produced and clean that it doesn't go anywhere!
That's exactly what I was thinking... saw Chvrches supporting their 2nd album and they were brilliant yes!
Chainsmokers/Twentyone pilots esp. "Ride"/imagine dragons etc etc... For me this band is the 10s version of what Garbage was in the 90s... Note that both their first albums were massive surprises and I dug both of them... both their second albums were good but sounded like expensive versions of their debuts... both of their 3rd albums sound like a commercial version of themselves... Beautifulgarbage was okay though and had its moments... I think this is going to be terrible!
Mitski's is stunning! Not sure about Paak's though... I know it's a great banger but I think his previous solo material was better... But maybe I'm missing the point... I think he's got to the point were he deserves a BIG hit and this might be it... That defining song that places him among all the Drakes of the world...
yeah!! that's definitely worth a mention... As is the album's final track "Secret World"...
My copy of "7" is still in Jamaica... :/ I wonder if I ll receive the package before Primavera Fest... I also bought the "7" T-Shirt and I wish I could wear it for their concert :)
Always loved the run of "Lover Of Mine", "Real Love", "10 Mile Stereo", "Better Times" and "Take Care". That's basically the whole side 2 of Teen Dream.
I LOVE Depression Cherry... Possibly their best record... Levitation is up there with their finest songs... "The branches of the trees, they will hang lower now" ... I always find those lyrics super encouraging when I feel down... As already mentioned guitars on the album are their finest yet, it is their most intimate and most gorgeous... maybe it does not appeal to everyone as the production is not "BIG" Beach House, but it's so surreal and beautiful that for me it's the album I find myself returning to most... I haven't stopped playing it since 2015!
Teen Dream and Bloom are their most immediate records but I find myself returning to Depression Cherry, Devotion and Thank Your Lucky Stars even more...
yeah! Still in transit from LA :/
While I agree with the song of the week, I feel that Florence and the Machine have been robbed... "Hunger" is excellent :)
I found "Get Out" to be the sort of generic song a band does on autopilot but "My Enemy" and "Never Say Die" were decent enough to save this album's campaign at that point... This though is terrible! It sounds like every generic alternative/modern rock artist that aspires for radio airplay... This template has been tried and tested over and ever again since Imagine Dragons emerged and took over... Honestly this reminds me of AWOLnation's "Sail", Rag'n'Bone Man's "Human", Bishop Briggs' "River" and obviously Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" which is a shame... I used to love Chvrches and I still think their debut is one of the finest albums of this decade but THIS??? :( :(
Damn... I also liked it's follow up "Start Over" back then!!
Great list! I still have to check out the majority of these. Phoebe Bridgers, Jay Som and Kelly Lee Owens are definitely among this year's best!!
Definitely agree with you on Visions of a Life...
Pitchfork gave MASSEDUCTION a 7.6... It's their loss after all I'm no longer taking them seriously.... Sometimes I feel as if Pitchfork leave it late to review an album for a reason... They see what the rest think about a particular title then their score is directly the opposite of what the general opinion is... It has happened with King Krule, Wolf Alice, & The Horrors lately!
I do not think music needs categorizing/labeling such as "weird" or "pop"... If it was so then everything would sound formulaic... I feel like Lorde with this song and the rest of "Melodrama" did not stick to the formula that worked for her on "Royals"... She could have repeated that trick and sold millions again but I believe she did the right thing and for me "Green Light" is one of the best songs of the year... As an artist Lorde has got the power to transcend "pigeonholing"; she can do whatever she wants and still be successful, critically and commercially... This is why I wholly admire her because few of the other pop stars around can claim this!
Perfectly agree with Amilcar Schell... this album is NOT Two Suns and can never be... They are two excellent bodies of work... One can't top the other as they're excellent at what they are in their own different territories... You must not compare them.... This album has got it's instant moments "Lillies" hit me on first listen although upon more listens it revealed it's mystical sheen... I'm still puzzled how you didn't even mention 2 of this album's masterpieces... That's Oh Yeah & Winter Fields.... The latter as well as the title track are two of the most captivating BFL moments to date... Add that with Laura and you've got a shivering centerpiece to this album... Oh Yeah reveals more on the sensual side of Natasha Khan while Marilyn is possibly the boldest most confident song I've ever heard from them... I agree with the fact that there's no "Daniel" in here but it would sound out of place in this tighter body of work... The Haunted Man stands on it's own with so many stand out songs, each one complimenting the other to form one of the best albums of the year! *****
What an awesome song... you can say that this is Ladytron but the sound is very different... It's amazing how they always seem to re-invent themselves!!! 10/10
