Bowie's absence is a complete shock as everything around it, and the album itself, was huge (especially bigger than Bieber at least). Cohen's missed the release deadline by about month.
Wow. Absence of Blackstar in Album of the Year noms is ridiculous, even for Grammy standards. How does Bieber get one!? (I already figured it would lose anyway seeing as everyone decided that somehow the record all those people wrote for Beyonce was better.)
1. We HAVE TO be able to laugh at ourselves. 2. Comedians make jokes about everyone and everything and it doesn't mean they're promoting hate. 3. But yes it's a fucked up time, and I get why everyone's edge.
This is Moz we're talkin' here... I almost found the fact that he addressed the crowd himself to be surprisingly generous.
Songs of Leonard Cohen, and Songs of Love and Hate are the ones I go to the most.
Well seeing as he's rich and the drummer for a famous band, I don't think he'll be reconsidering much.
You guys should all bear in mind Shkreli is basically just a pro-grade troll, so don't take him too seriously; grain of salt. Anyone watch his Periscope though? At times fairly entertaining.
I'm in CT and we've heard of it, which is to say that a pub might have it on its grub menu here and there, or upon asking a friend if they'd like frito pie they'd acknowledge it. I certainly haven't asked everyone I know or man-on-the-street... but I assumed people just sorta know what it is. But hey, I just heard that apparently apple cider donuts or maple nut ice cream don't exist outside New England... so what do I know!
*Andrew Fletcher. However I would say the lads could use some inspiration as they've been a little by-the-numbers since Playing the Angel.
Yeah, it was always branded as just an EP, especially in that it's mostly remixes, revisions, and odds and ends... not really a proper studio album by any stretch.
Reznor's production pretty much saves this album... Some good atmosphere here and there and production touches that show some degree of nuance. And some decent songs. Though generally speaking the schtick comes across as pretty corny now so it's hard to take totally seriously (Mechanical Animals can still hold its own though). But man oh man did it feel dangerous back then. I still love that ending of Cryptorchid.
Still the coolest bassist of the 00's. I don't think anyone even puts this kind of flash and character into themselves as players anymore, either. For better or for worse I suppose, but damn do I miss cool rock musicians. Everyone's just so... dweeby now. Those who are still in rock bands, anyway.
Damn, yer dad must have some gems in there then! I was only in single digits during the 80s, but since it was during my lifetime it wasn't so hard to eventually get into these bands in my teens, but it almost seems like it'll all be eternally "young" music, so it's still weird to hear it was in "my father's record collection." This coming from someone whose parents really didn't listen to music, so my parents even having a record collection at all was a foreign concept.
can we continue this another time, another place? preferably on a day without me.
Ohhh fall of '96. Moody cloudy days and cold weary nights listening to this album... And the bass on this album... extraordinary! Sealed the deal for me. Also my introduction to Bill Hicks. Classic.
I was humming that line and it still didn't register right away...
Wait I'm late to this! Was this the judge? https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/26/de/00/26de00bb7809cc3f3f08af394d6c2fc0.jpg
Isn't it sorta misleading to say these are his "final recordings"? Seems more like "Blackstar outtakes." Tony Visconti said Bowie was working on new music before his death when he thought he had more time, but they were still only in the demo/home-recording stage and never made it to the studio. Those are more likely his final recordings... Because you know at some point -- if they ever emerge -- we'll see this headline again.
"Once they stopped trying to be their heroes and started trying to be themselves it all went to shit" .... WTF!? Can't even begin with having that kind of take on things. I hope you don't feel that way about all music... Considering the amazing leaps they made on Siamese Dream alone, this seems such an asinine perspective tho...
I'm hoping it's more in line with something like Zaireeka -- psychedelia both goofy and ominous, the best of their whole spectrum. I'd happily take another Embryonic... though that and The Terror back-to-back has made for a fairly bleak picture lately.
Glossing over the fact that he's even taking part in this at all, but based on those pull-quotes in the story, Isn't that exactly what a lot of us on the left - particularly those of us who were for Bernie - are frustrated/mad/WTF about with Hillary and the DNC?? (Admittedly I didn't have a chance to listen to the rest. But Christ I hope that doesn't mean he's pro-Trump. If I recall, Bill is usually a non-voter.)
I'm getting in on this too. The Flood + Alan Moulder combo is one not seen enough anymore. It would seal the deal if they worked on a new SP record... it's pretty clear to see how things have been without Flood at the helm...
And he's only reached the 210th day of a 366-day binge.
Ahh yes, the ole' "..it's like our early stuff" hook. Typically the band in question picks one song or one aspect of the new record that can be compared to a classic and play it up. Maybe they used the same producer from years past, or more often than not, one single has a passing resemblance to an earlier sound while the rest of the record... doesn't. Kinda like how the classic "going back to my roots" or "really getting back to the songwriting" is code for "boring acoustic album."
What's that quote about the "opiate for the masses"? That's Beyonce in this scenario. "Enjoyable" doesn't really matter in this case. Blackstar is plain and simple a better album and a more important artistic statement.
Nailed it. I'd like this a million times if I could. Side note: Flash forward to next year, and if Beyonce takes Album of the Year over Bowie, I'm gonna be pissed. Yes, I know the Grammys are bullshit too, just sayin.
BLACKSTAR doesn't even make the top 10!? Possibly one of the most singular and unprecedented statements from a legendary artist that we've ever been given. This list itself describes it as "way beyond any limits and definitions we could place on it." The final statement by David Bowie, recorded on the brink of death, about his own death. ... But not as good some Beyonce album. Not even as good as a Car Seat Headrest album. Not even in the top 10. Bullshit.
And without "Mary Jo", Jens Lekman wouldn't have had that perfect sample for "Black Cab!" Maybe there wouldn't even be a "Black Cab!"
Someone probably complained that we shouldn't be objectifying our indie rock stars.
Like that many people in the damn hospital would have known who the hell he was?
Wow, that stage crasher is the textbook image of a douche nozzle. That goofy grin was probably directed at his bro dudes in the crowd and they probably talked about how awesome it was over some brewskis after the show.
Ehh... if you're alive on the planet earth, you're qualified to take part.
I mean, I'll give you that, about being on Infowars. It's a tough one to overlook and sorta spoils the whole thing, especially since a lot of what Billy said is the type of stuff he's said elsewhere. It may seem like "rant about young people", but maybe to be fair, a whole lot of change has come in on the shoulders of the "young people," and there have been many good and bad consequences of that. Seems worth discussing... like a live-action sociology class.
Yeah, that's the disappointing part. I don't see what was so crazy about his views here. He's not anti-progress... Most of what he said echoes the sentiments of most people I know.
Yeah, I was scratching my head; what did he say that was so crazy? Was it just that he was on Alex Jones? People flipped over it for what seemed to be just a fairly rational exchange of ideas. If people said "old man out of touch," whatever, but it's hardly batshit!
I don't think there's anything particularly crazy about what he's saying here, as ultimately he makes some points.... But Alex Jones... damn, that's a kicker.
