This is my all time #1 ... reading it again today, all these years later, I still giggled to the point of tears. (now to transition into a farewell post, while I'm good and ready to get it out there) Videogum was an embarrassingly important part of my life back then, to be honest. I was just out of college, living in a new state where I didn't know anyone, already in career transition after my Plan A turfed out spectacularly, and was just kind of hanging out at a crappy temp job until the next thing came along (which was law school - can't lose, sure bet right there!) Gabe and Lindsay (and later Kelly, not to mention the Monsters and guest bloggers) were a reminder then, and a few other rough times, that there was a world out there of smart, funny, clever people who sometimes also had nothing better to do than keep up with Topher Grace and hunt for the Worst Movie of All Time. It's a been a class act from byline to the last comment on the post for its entire run, which very few publications, internet or otherwise, can say. And I'm going to miss it a lot. Goodbye Videogum. You were a central part of turning early twenties me (who kind of sucked) into late twenties me (who is pretty cool most of the time), so thanks.

Hearing a hint of Scharpling in the mix too, who really should do more musical impressions (see also http://www.lowtimespodcast.com/tom-against-the-machine/) This would be at the nexus of Daly/Scharpling humor, and the two have been bros of late, so it makes sense to me.

Also representing for the FOTs. Its been a while since I could single out an episode as a good starter (Tom's blessing and his curse is that he rewards regular devotion over hours and weeks of listening), but this week's would be a good'un. No Wurster call, but a steady and delightful assortment of weirdos and regulars (including the return of Tom's young ward Milo after a lengthy abscense, voice changed and endorsing Yerba Mate and Coldplay), and classic Tom rants on Guitar Center commercials and the forthcoming plague of cicadas.

"Oh man, I can't wait to show the world (and particularly Videogum.com) how I've managed to combine two of the best things in the world-- public wedding proposals and PRANKS-- in the absolute best optimum fashion!"

Or you can be like the rest of us fine Michiganders and enjoy his surprisingly tolerable side gig in music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHwGSBBaRGk Of course, they even had to ruin that with Will McAvoy's super cool guitar display in his apartment and bro-jammin out on Bin Laden night with Jim "Don't call me Halpert" Harper.

Karl is a lot more real than a lot of us, I'd say. Lives more, does more, loves more. Who are we to judge, just because he's the creation of a (surprisingly funny) writer for Family Guy? Mr. Welzein, I lift my Bud Light 'Num to you, good sir.

Actually, don't think they're quite primo enough to be called beefers. Probably more in the category of sloppers, alas.

That she does, which is a testament to how fundamentally decent Gabe and Kelly and the monsters are. Also, I feel like her writing style tries to ape Videogum a lot, which is really a relatively minor quibble- imitation is the highest form of something or another. I also have grown sympathetic to their extremely tight commenting rules to an extent, if only because I've learned more and more about what genuine creeps are out there and what they'll say and do for kicks to shut down a progressive female voice (see: the Penny Arcade dickwolves thing, which started off as a slightly overwrought guest post at SV but turned into blinding assholery by the PA folks). So I get that they want to keep a handle on things over there, though to the point of policing folks for innocent use of the words crazy/insane/lame is a bit much in my eyes. Overall, its their space and I respect their rights to it, but whoo boy, from the outside in, is it ever an interesting little world.

Admittedly a useful link, but eeesh Shakesville. I see what you are trying to do some of the time, but then you post a screed about how Brave is racist to Scots and enforces ugly stereotypes of outspoken fiery gingers, and its back to square one.

I went with the Undeclared reference, because its one of my favorite moments of the show, as well as one of the best scenes Seth Rogen has ever done. Also, doesn't it kind of sum up how all of us relate to Nora Ephron movies? Hooking us in despite our most cranky cynicism? I do feel dirty about putting an @JuddApatow on there though.... :-\ I just want him to know how much I care!

So, apparently this show is set in the recent past, starting in 2010 or so. Meaning they will cover the Bin Laden killing soonish- Sorkin confirmed as much in interviews. That said, over/under on it being more or less ridiculous than the "Live from Abbotobad" path the Studio 60 twitter took on the story? Betting on less, but NOT BY MUCH.

ALSO: do you think Owen Wilson's character from Midnight in Paris will appreciate this movie more than the rest of us, having met Fitzgerald and all? That's assuming they even show American movies in France, where he lives now....

Classic Cranky Gabe Rant. A+++, would buy again. That said, I'm going to see this movie, you're going to see this movie, we're all going to see this movie... its like the Avengers, but with books (book books, not comic books... no literary value judgement implied, nerds). Blame your high school english teacher.

I'm betting Harmon lands on his feet over at Happy Endings. TWIST! Because we're all really wondering what will happen when THAT gang does a Tarantino homage with multiple timelines and a musical number, right? All signs point to uh-mah-zing. Oh, and Happy Endings just incorporates the cast of BFF into their storylines, like eating a twin in the womb.

We got US Attorney General Eric Holder for law school graduation this year, which isn't bad.... but I was pushing for Jason Segel in character as Marshall Eriksen from How I Met Your Mother.
